The company is based in Durban, South Africa which is the perfect base camp due to it's centralized location in regards to accessibility to the various surf spots and Game Reserves. Apart from a tour of the world class surf spots along the coast of KwaZulu Natal and viewing game at one of the natural heritage game reserves African Surfaris specializes in Mozambique - the land of sand bottom points, crystal clear warm water and little to no crowds.

African Surfaris' aim is to provide a professionally run tour company which combines your traditional surf trip with an authentic game viewing experience that results in an amazing surfing and game watching eco tour.  African Surfaris goal is to provide a surf tour package that is unique to any other surf tour package in the world.

The concept behind African Surfaris is an idea which has been floating around for some time but it was the meeting of Justin Starow (Bird) and Dave Renaud which saw the company officially form in early 2002.


OUR TEAM

Justin "Bird" 

Justin, or Bird as he's affectionately known by his friends and family, originally hails from Laguna Beach, California but now resides in Durban, South Africa.  Justin attended Pepperdine University in California where he obtained his degree of Bachelor of Science in International Business.  Justin is a surfer with 30 years experience having traveled the world in search of surf and adventure.  Justin's travels have seen him living and working in Indonesia, surfing in Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, the South Pacific, Israel, France, Spain, Hawaii and many other destinations around the world.  Bird has also traveled extensively through South Africa and Mozambique - his home away from home.  Hailing from foreign descent, Justin is able to identify and meet the needs of the foreign traveler.  

Dave Renaud

Dave was born and raised in the coastal town of Umhlanga Rocks just outside of Durban.  He is a former professional surfer and South African champion who has spent the last 40 years in pursuit of the perfect wave.  Dave, a respected member of the local surfing community, has years of experience and a vast knowledge of the KwaZulu - Natal and Mozambique coastlines.  If there ever was a surfer from this region that could guide you to the best surf spots daily then Dave is your man.  Besides being a former professional surfer Dave is also a qualified professional surf instructor and coach. 

Monte Fuller

Monte arrived in Southern Africa during a USA medical mission to Lesotho in 2000, and kind of just stayed.  He comes from Oregon where he worked as a Fire Fighter/Medic with Nestucca Fire Rescue, and Pacific West Ambulance.  He's was also a Swift Water Rescue Technician, and he was captain of the NRFPD Water Rescue Team.  Over the years Monte has also been involved in film and video production, and has traveled around the world surfing and filming.

1. South Africa, Mozambique Combo 9 night 10 day Tour Package

This is our most popular package as you get a little taste of everything.  We start the tour being based in Umhlanga Rocks (Durban) and explore the the wide variety of waves ranging from sand bottom points to beach breaks and reefs.  On our way to Mozambique we overnight in the Imfolozi/Hluhluwe Game Reserve where we will seek out the Big 5 animals.  From there it is a 4x4 adventure into Mozambique over the sand dunes to Ponta do Ouro (Point of Gold) where we will surf one of the longest right hand sand bottom point break in the world!


The package includes:

- Airport transfers (Durban, King Shaka international airport)
- All accommodation (beach front or right across the street)

With this tour we focus on the gems of the Durban's North and South Coasts.  We will be based in Umhlanga Rocks (Durban) and explore the the wide variety of waves ranging from sand bottom points to beach breaks and reefs.  We also have the option to stay multiple nights in the Imfolozi/Hluhluwe Game Reserve where we will seek out the Big 5 animals.

  4. Mozambique Exclusive Tour - Tofinho and the surrounding areas

  Tofinho is a tropical paradise situated at one of  Mozambiques best point breaks.  If you like sand bottom points then you will love this right hander.  There are numerous other sand points, reefs, and beach break in this stunning region.
  
  There are various options of doing the Mozambique exclusive tour.  Please note the prices are the same regardless of what option you choose.
  
  

  Option 1:  The best way for clients to maximize their time in Tofo would be to fly into Inhambane airport where they would be met and greeted by African Surfaris and then transferred to the accommodation approx. 20 minutes away.   We would then  spend 9 nights 10 days in Tofo/tofinhio.
  
  

  Option 2:  Fly into Maputo airport  where you would be met by African Surfaris and transferred to your accommodation.  Depending on your flight time arrival we would either overnight an hour north of Maputo or if the flight arrives in the early morning we would drive straight through to Tofo/Tofinho.  The drive from Maputo to Tofo is approx.  6-8 hrs.
  
  

  Option 3:  Fly into Durban, South Africa, and drive up to Tofo which takes approx. 16-18 hrs.  The drive would be broken up into 2 days.  We would depart Durban early morning  and arrive to Maputo where we would overnight about an hour north of the city.  The following morning we would depart our accommodation very early and arrive in tofo around 2 pm.  With this option the portion of the stay in Tofinho would  be 6 nights.  This option is a great way to see more of South Africa and Mozambique.  I highly recommend doing this option if you have the time to add on extra days to get the full experience.  Also with this option or any of the packages above we can add on at an extra cost Ponta do Ouro and extend the tour.
