ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Surf Camp Byron Bay is the only surf camp on absolute beachfront in Byron Bay.

You stay in the lush, tropical grounds of Backpackers Inn, and surf every day under the guidance of our professional and surfing instructors.

Our campsite is connected by a short track through the sand dunes straight on to Byron’s legendary surf breaks, and the iconic view of Byron’s beautiful hinterland (great for sunsets!)

When you’re not surfing, independently explore Byron Bay’s vibrant street/surf scene and nightlife, with the town centre just 350 metres away. Surf Camp Byron Bay is owned and operated by the Byron Bay Surf School, a fully registered and licensed surf lesson provider in the Byron Shire.

The Byron Bay Surf School – operator of Surf Camp Byron Bay – is Byron Bay’s original surf school, teaching locals and visitors how to surf since 1996.

Over that time, we’ve taught from 3 locations in town – including the fabled Surf School House on Johnson Street, where surf dreams were made and people fell in love ..

But our latest location at Backpackers Inn on pure beachfront in town is our best position yet.  It was over a few Bintangs at Bingin with the crew from Backpackers Inn that Surf Camp Byron Bay was born, with the vision of offering authentic, quality surf instruction at a Byron Bay’s favourite beachfront hostel.

Byron Bay Surf School is one of the few surf schools in town actually licenced to teach in Byron Bay .. which means no lengthy bus trips first to Ballina or Lennox Head first, away from Byron’s best learner waves.  We teach on Byron’s beach, just a 1-minute walk through the dunes from the hostel and you’re ready to surf.

The Backpackers Inn, established since 1988, is a meeting place for people from all over the world. Experience the BEACH culture at a true BEACH hostel focused entirely on budget backpacker style accommodation. The staff are friendly and ready to help you with all your surf camp needs.
Surf Camp Byron Bay is the only surf camp with accommodation right on the beach maximising your time on the water, ensuring your time is spent surfing and not driving!

Two things to know:
1) 45 Seconds – the time it takes to get to the beach from the hostel.
2) 400 Metres – the distance to the centre of Byron Bay from the hostel.

Surf camps are our specialty and we have taught many school & university groups, corporate groups, private functions, and international tour groups. Each group’s needs are assessed and appropriate packages are created accordingly to maximize the group’s enjoyment and learning experience.

Our friendly local staff can help you put together the ultimate surfing safari, between 1- 14 days, from budget to luxury. Whether you just want to surf great waves or incorporate other activities such as yoga, dolphin kayaking, or add components to your package such as accommodation and meals, we can design the ultimate surfing experience for you and your group.

Wipeout Weekender 2 Days is perfect for the surfer with limited time and loads of energy, for an incredible 2-days of surfing and partying on the beach in Byron Bay. You will spend the morning or afternoon with our friendly, highly qualified coaches surfing some of the best spots in Byron Bay. Then in the evening we will take you out for some food to some of the best spots in town. We can show the best party places before you wind back up at the Backpackers Inn less than 5 mins from byron town centre.

This package includes:
-2-nights Dorm share accommodation
-2 daily surf lessons inc. all equipment
-2 breakfasts & 2 dinners
-Optional activities (bike hire, volleyball, swimming pool)

The Sundekker 3 days package is for the surfer looking to move on ‘Green Waves’ and improve lesson on lesson. Just like all our packages we will start right from the beginning teaching you the basics right through to getting you to surf like a pro. In between sessions you can soak up the sun, atmosphere and easy-going surf culture that Byron Bay has to offer. Just remember, breakfast and dinner is included so all you need to focus on is your surfing!
