About the Frijoles Locos Team:

We are Frijoles Locos and are here to do our very best, to ensure your vacation in Playa Grande is everything you want it to be, and more.

Since 2007, Frijoles Locos has helped contribute to the vacation experience of many travelers. To achieve our goals, we are fortunate to have the most amazing team at Frijoles Locos. Walking into the shop, you will most likely first encounter the bubbly, friendly Krizia Grant, our Shop Manager. Krizia has a smile to light up the room, she is super smart, helpful and tries her very best at anything she is required to do.

Krizia began working at Frijoles Locos in December of 2011, and was literally thrown in the deep end, starting her work in the midst of the busiest time. She hit the floor running and hasn’t looked back. At the time, surfing was a foreign thought to Krizia, however in the ensuing months, her passion for surfing has blossomed, and it is likely you will see her on her bright yellow board before work, catching some waves.

2013 saw a couple of new additions to the Frijoles Locos staff.

Mariana Fonseca joined our team in March, in the middle of her MBA and after having completed a Bachelor of Tourism. Mariana lived in San Jose for most of her adult life, and worked in big companies of the tourism industry. One day a few years ago, Mariana and a friend were driving past Frijoles Locos on their way to their favorite beach, when Mariana remarked to her friend “One day, I am going to work there”. 

Mariana is in charge of promoting the business, and spends a lot of time in the office, however if you are fortunate to meet her, you will see another friendly, smiley face, with a zest for life and a willingness to help you. Like Krizia, Mariana has started surfing since moving to Playa Grande from the big city, and loves to start her day by catching a few waves!

Juan Jose Rodriguez joined the Frijoles Locos staff team around April 2013. A passion for surf, he can talk to you forever about boards, surf spots, waves, anything that interests you about surfing! Moreover, JJ has a passion for his country, the wildlife, the birdlife, the trees and he loves to impart his knowledge on any willing ears.

Having a degree in journalism, and a knack for graphic design, you will see the fruits of JJ’s work in our printed promotional materials. He is in charge of maintaining our surfboard rental quiver, keeping the photos up to date and posting fun and informative tidbits on our social media pages.

An encounter with JJ in Frijoles Locos will surely make you smile, and leave you feeling like you learned something new!

Marcos Suarez began with Frijoles Locos in 2011 as a kid fresh out of high school. Years beforehand, Corynne remembers seeing him out surfing by the palm trees in Grande, and remarking on what a great attitude he had. Always polite, always smiling, Marcos has developed into a responsible, intelligent young man, no longer the general shop-hand. Marcos is in charge of the Locos Ding Repair and can be found sanding, spraying, fixing boards out the back of the shop. He is a talented surf instructor and patient teacher, who helps with surf lessons when needed.

Marcos is studying at University Latina, a degree in business and when he isn’t working or studying, will most definitely be surfing.

Arelys Fonseca began with the Beans back in 2009 when Finnegan was a baby. Starting out as a nanny, Arelys took the very best care of her young dependent, always making sure he was safe, happy and content. Recently, with Finnegan attending school Arelys has become one of the most important assets to Frijoles Locos. Trying her best to learn and speak English, she is now interacting with customers, and making sure the shop is always looking neat, tidy and clean.

Having started her Physical Therapy studies, and currently studying at massage school, in 2013, Arelys joins the team at El Frijol Feliz Day Spa, offering massages, pedicures, manicures, facials and body scrubs. We are fortunate to have Arelys on our staff for so many years.

IAN BEAN

Ian is an experienced surfer, surf judge and surf instructor, having grown up in Florida with two parents that surfed and were keen to show him early on what a great sport it is!  Over the last couple of years, in addition to teaching surfing, Ian has also been a tour guide/ instructor for a vacation package provider, ensuring the best possible vacation experience for his guests.

In 1994 Ian achieved 2nd place Longboard at the US Championships.

In 1995 at the US Championships, Hawaii he  placed 5th in the Longboard event.

1996 East Coast Championships, 1st place Masters Short-board (over 25 year olds). 1996 US Championships, 2nd place Masters Short-board, 4th place Masters Longboard.

In 2001, 2002 and 2005, Ian was announced as Best Judge for the East coast. In 2003 Ian was Head Judge for the Costa Rican national surfing circuit.

Ian’s success as a surf judge, in the US at a professional surfing level makes him an ideal surf instructor. An eye for detail in his surfing lessons, makes sure that any bad habits are identified early on, ensuring a faster path to becoming a better surfer.

CORYNNE BEAN

Corynne Bean is a Certified Massage Therapist and Naturopath who completed her training in Sydney, Australia. Her education in Naturopathy and passion for a healthy lifestyle is the impetus behind establishing El Frijol Feliz Spa, and relocating from the hectic pace of Sydney, to the tranquil setting of Playa Grande, Costa Rica.

Corynne has written articles for Sydney based publications, worked as a Naturopath in “The Modern Apothecary”, a visionary concept borne of the need to make natural therapies more accessible to the general public, as well as working as a Naturopath in Apotheke 20-20 in London, as well as pharmacies in Sydney.

Corynne is enthusiastic to share her knowledge of complementary medicine with anyone who is interested, in the hope of increasing health-related awareness of alternatives to people from all over the world.

TOGETHER

Corynne and Ian have lived in Playa Grande since 2003. The idea of Frijoles Locos was born around 2004 after seeing an unmet need for visitors to the area to have a go-to place for all their vacation requirements. With luck, a healthy dose of serendipity, and sheer determination, the perfect location and the means to make it happen became available. After a couple of years of experiencing the building and permitting process first hand in Costa rica, the fruits of their labor was finally born! They  have been told that they inspire people to seek out a less stress filled lifestyle, which is certainly possible when you live what you love.

Located a short walk to the beach, next door to Playa Grande School, and just around the corner from the wonderful “Kike’s Place”, Frijoles Locos provides the local and tourist community alike with not only a full-service surf shop, but a professional massage and beauty center too. To complete the package deal, upstairs are two beautiful apartments where you can stay and enjoy everything that Playa Grande has to offer.

Frijoles Locos Surf Shop is proud to support La Paz Community School, particularly their scholarship program so that today’s youth will have a bright future. In generations to come, local families will have more opportunity to create their own businesses, become leaders within the community, increase awareness of our environment and embrace sustainability.

La Paz Community School is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2007 in order to address fundamental socioeconomic and cultural gaps prevalent in a region struggling to cope with the balance of an agriculture and tourism based economy. By integrating talented youth from the underprivileged, middle class, and upper class sector of rural Latin America, the school transforms student differences into strengths that foment rich and meaningful dialogue and experiences at all grade levels, thus preparing students to effectively confront global challenges.

The scholarship program at La Paz Community School enables students who would never have been afforded the chance to receive such a quality education, to do so. While donations to the scholarship fund help cover costs of education, there are so many other needs to be met, which is where you can really help (Pack for a Purpose). Thank you for your time and effort in giving back to the community you are visiting. In this way, you are truly helping to change the future of these wonderful children and consequently, their own families.

Your trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without the thrill of catching your first wave! Having a surf lesson in Costa Rica is like jelly to peanut butter!

From beginner surf lessons to surf lessons/ coaching for accomplished surfers, Frijoles Locos Surf Shop in Playa Grande offers a complete range of surf lesson options.

People of all ages, from kids to grandparents, enjoy our professional, fun, and safe surf instruction. Small group surf lessons (max 4 students per instructor) or private surf lessons are available.

Please refer to the individual profiles for our surf instructors by clicking the booking button. We employ responsible, mature, patient and enthusiastic surfers who love the sport and love to teach.

We aim to make your first and following surfing experiences fun while safe, and will take you to the places with the best conditions to learn on.

 Key details of our Playa Grande surf lessons:

$30 per person group lesson rate, up to 4 people per instructor, 90 minutes duration.
$120 for a private lesson for 1 person, 90 minutes duration.

Transportation within Playa Grande included!

If you would like to request one instructor per two or 3 of you, cost will be $120 for the lesson. This is preferred by those who wish to surf with just their friends/ loved ones/ family.

If you are organizing larger groups, please contact us for specifics, assistance and options for planning your large group (12 + participants).

Group and Private surf lesson duration is 1 1/2 hours (90 minutes)

Pick up and drop off at your hotel or rental house in Playa Grande is available. Transportation from other towns can be arranged for an additional fee. See below for areas serviced by our transportation network.

Safe, fun lessons for all levels. Beginners will learn with other beginners, in small group lessons of a maximum of 4 students per instructor. Surf coaching available for intermediates and advanced surfers, and we suggest private surf classes for the more advanced students, to ensure individualized instruction.

From tiny-tot kids to grand-parents, anyone can learn and have fun too!

Also available: lifeguard service- hire one of our staff to watch over you and your family, and/ or teach you ocean awareness so that you can enjoy the ocean without the risks. $50 for 2 hours

Why Playa Grande for surf lessons? Obviously, you have the entire country of Costa Rica to choose from as your surf lesson destination, so why Playa Grande?

There are a few reasons. Lack of crowds is one big reason. When learning to surf, the last thing you want is to be among 50 other beginners taking their first surf lesson. Playa Grande is a huge beach, with plenty of space for our surf instructors to select a quiet, uncrowded location for your surf lesson.

Playa Grande is a long stretch of beach, which, at the most southerly point intersects with Tamarindo. Typically, the south end of Playa Grande beach has the smallest waves most suitable for beginner surf lessons. When the waves are not suitable for lessons at the north end of the beach, our instructors will take you to where it is more sheltered and fun to learn on.

There may be some days where it just is not the right conditions for lessons, and we will advise you of this, suggesting another, more suitable day. For us, it is much more important that you enjoy your surfing experiences here in Playa Grande, and that you are taken surfing when the conditions facilitate this.

If you are staying at the Westin Reserva Conchal, Four Seasons Papagayo, Playas del Coco, Playa Ocotal, Playa Danta, RIU Guanacaste, Playa Brasilito, Playa Flamingo or any other northern beaches, Playa Grande is one of the closest beaches to learn to surf. GUIDED SURF TRIPS – Playa Grande, Avellanas, Marbella, Little Hawaii, secret spots…

Private guided surf trip for 1-2 person $200, 3 people $80 each, 4-5 people, $70 each   5 hour guided surf trip (5 hours from pick up time to return time) It will depend on what the waves are doing (swell and wind etc) as to where you are taken. The furthest point away is Marbella, and takes a little over an hour to get there. With this time frame, you are looking at almost 3 hours of water time. Includes: Door to door transportation, surf guide to help you maximize YOUR wave count (not his), cooler with ice, water, juice, fresh pineapple, and a beer each. Spare wax, spare leashes, spare fins in case you break your own. Does not include: lunch/ other drinks, surfboard rental.

Grande Bliss Package

Start the day off right with a freshly made glass of our detoxifying juice. Enhance the detoxifying effects by stimulating your circulation with our Heavenly homemade sugar scrub. You get to choose the essential oil aroma for your treatment.
Following your exfoliation, wrapped in a locally made sarong, you will be shown where to rinse off your new silky smooth skin in our outdoor hot shower by the pool.
