ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Maria Mar - Surf & Guest House is located a 10 minutes’ walk from the center of Melides where you can make your purchases in a traditional market, 5 minutes’ drive from her beaches and 20 minutes’ drive from the area of Carvalhal-Comporta, were you will surf with the gorgeous background of Serra da Arrábida.

Melides, Carvalhal and Comporta are sandy beachs. Came and appreciate our crystal waters, surrounded by dunes, pine trees and gorgeous rice fields,

Visit the beautiful Nature Reserve of Estuário do Sado, Melides Lagoon, Nature Reserve of Lagoa da Sancha…. Here you have gorgeous landscape and authenticity.

CAMP CHARACTER

Maria Mar have a family-like atmosphere. We are a couple of surfers that live also in property of the Guest House.

We receive only 10 people to give you a personal care.

CAMP OPERATOR

We are a couple of surfers, with 30-year-old who opened his surf school in 2008. Besides the surf, we love nature and we like to make walkingtours and see the wildlife. We have a daughter with nine months, and our Guest House has her name ... Maria (the most typical Portuguese name) Mar (means Sea). The Guest House is our latest project, having opened in 2015. Feel at home...

View to the Melides beach and rice fields.

Our guest house is a 3 minutes walk of the Várzea de Melides, incredible spot to make birdwatching and hiking. Take a swim also in the beautiful riverside.

CATERING

Breakfast is included with the room, which includes Melides bread, made in wood oven, cheese, ham, homemade jam, butter, milk, coffee, fruit, cereals and yogurt (if you are vegetarian please inform us and you will have an alternative).

You have also a shared kitchen, restaurants nearby (price per person  +/- €6) and local market.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

Our surf lesson is about 1h30, include all the necessary material, insurance and teachers certified by Portuguese Surf Federation.

Lessons are given in portuguese, english, french or spanish.

Lesson is given according to the tide.

On request you can also have yoga at the beach.

SURF MATERIALS

We have all the necessary material to surf, like wetsuites, leash, wax, softboards and fiberglass boards.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

We live in a enchatend area. During the summer guests can enjoy the beach parties, festivals (music/ gastronomic), local parties and others local events. Guests can visit local markets, visit our patrimony, appreciate the nature (walking/bicycle/ birdwatching) etc. Portuguese cuisine is divine and portuguese people are very welcoming.

São Torpes – Sines: point and beach break – 30 minutes

Seasonal conditions

The climate is Mediterranean, but with a strong maritime influence because this region is facing tothe Atlantic. Temperatures are usually pleasant throughout the year, except in some periods of winds.

The monthly temperature averages are around 20-23 degrees. In the winter (December to February) 11/13 degrees with annual peaks can vary between -4 ° (inside in January) and 40 degrees in July.

The sea water is very rich in biodiversity and a little fresh, with temperature ranging between 14/15 in February and 20/21 in July, August, September and October.

Crowd factor and local people

Carvalhal beach and Melides beaches are quiet beaches, they are beaches of small villages so we have few surfers. São Torpes beach is bigger and is more know, so have much more surfers and surf schools.

Characterization of surroundings/region

Melides and Carvalhal – Comporta are small and cousy villages near to the sea… The nature, the food and the people are really treasures. During the summer you have local parties in the villages or parties at the beach restaurants.

Ways to get to the camp

You have train/ bus to Melides, but is not direct, so we advice you to rent a car at the airport of Lisbon.
