Welcome To DEWATALAND !

The Nusa Dewata is a beautiful 68’ Penisi style wooden sloop motorsailor and translates from the Balinese language as “Island of the Gods”. She was commissioned by Mark Coleman & Albert Taylor in Lembongan in 1992 as the 1st boat built in Indonesia for the purpose of surf trip.

ND has been operating in the Mentawais for over 20 years taking many happy surfers on the trip of their lives and feeding money back into the Mentawai and West Sumatran economies. She is affectionately regarded as the prettiest boat in the fleet and colourful character.

ND can take 5-6 punters comfortably and specialises in finding uncrowded waves as well as giving punters some experience in the workings of sail power for travelling and deep sea fishing.

She has been constantly upgraded and lovingly maintained by the current owners, and has proved herself to be a valuable asset for the surf industry here in Sumatra.
We have a 16? tender “Kalani” which has a 100 hp outboard 4 stroke and 250 liter inboard fuel tanks. This has given us the capacity to send all the guests ahead of the mother ship to reach breaks faster as well as open up the choices of waves to surf. Its also enabled us to do more scouting around on the run to help find those “empty lineups”.

ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

There are four large islands making up the Mentawai archipelago including Siberut, Sipura, North and South Pagai. These four islands are surrounded by many smaller ones.

Their countless coral reefs attract dynamic swells from deep in the Indian Ocean to create picture perfect waves of all shapes and sizes. The variety and quality of surf is mind boggling!!

There are bommies, barrels, grinding lefts, pumping rights, mal waves and intermediate waves, which allow us to cater for all standards of surfing ability.

We cannot, and nor do we want to, list each and every spot. Lets just say there are still waves being discovered and surfed in the island chain that have never been surfed before.

Forget the restrictions of the land, aboard the Nusa Dewata we will find the surf of your dreams whilst trying our upmost to keep you distanced from any crowds.

We are also happy to travel to the Tellos Islands if desired.

CHARTER OPERATOR

The Owners and Crew

Simon Dale and wife Siti purchased the Nusa Dewata in November 2006 after being a part owner since 2002. Simon has worked as a cray fisherman in Western Australia as well as diving on oilfield rigs in SE Asia in the early 1980s. He then moved on to delivering yachts around the world for a number of years experiencing just about every possible situation the seven seas could throw at him.

He has surfed extensively in Indonesia since 1979 and around the Mentawai Islands since 1996. He has limited medical training and will be happy to “stitch you up” if the occasion arises at no extra expense.

Chartering the Nusa Dewata is the best job in the world for him, and with his vast experience he will endeavour to maintain the solid reputation that the Nusa Dewata has held in the archipelago for the last 16 years.

Siti is in charge of shore management and is constantly keeping the boat supplied and maintained to the upmost standards. She has been doing this for seven years now and it is no easy feat.

Simon and Siti are also pleased to announce that our young guide Jake Thompson from NSW Australia will be returning this season to fill in for a number of trips due to Simon spending more time with his growing family.

The Nusa Dewata has just completed her annual docking where everything is cleaned, painted, rebuilt, tweaked and the usual small fortune spent on her to make sure everything runs as smooth as possible for your trip to surfing paradise.

CATERING

Our Australian trained Indonesian chef will blow your taste buds away with generous helpings of tasty energy filled Indonesian and western dishes, guaranteed to satisfy even the fussiest eaters.

Fresh fruit such as bananas, watermelon, grapes, mandarins, apples or papaya are available for you to help yourself at all times.

Tea, coffee, soft-drink, fruit juice and water is available for you to help yourself to at all times as well as three beers per person per day. Spirits and other alcohol is available at local prices.

Following is an example of a days dining

Early:

Perhaps a light breakfast before an early surf such as fruit salad, cereal, toast (with jam, vegemite, honey etc.) or eggs and banana pancakes.

Later:

Maybe enjoy a “hot” breakfast (or “brunch”). This could be pancakes or omelettes and you eat as much as you want in order to have enough energy to hit the surf again.

Lunch:

Usually something that provides you with lots of energy to help you paddle into those grinding tubes. Typical lunches may include fresh ham salad sandwiches, noodles, tacos, jaffles etc.

Dinner:

The main meal of the day and may include pasta, BBQ chicken, double burgers, curry beef, lasagna, burritos and stir fried veggies accompanied by vegetables, rice and fresh salad all washed down with a few ice cold beers.

There are also plenty of (help your self) snacks such as chips and chocolate bars for you to munch on throughout the day.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF MATERIALS

This is entirely up to how much excess baggage you are willing to pay for! We have storage for them all on board but check with your airline first. Most people bring 2-4 boards. Mid length boards and guns generally get used and occasionally the short boards get pulled out. If you are going to bring an extra board we would suggest a replacement for the board you will use the most as it is not uncommon to break boards. Remember to bring extra leg ropes and tropical surf wax. There is also a Sup board available on the Dewata.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Fishing, Snorkelling, Surfing – What More Could You Want?

As well as being one of the prettiest boats in the fleet, she is accompanied by a trusty 17’ aluminium speed boat with a 100 hp outboard to ferry guests to and from the surf, and for recreational fishing and snorkelling.

Extensive game fishing equipment and snorkelling gear is supplied.

Short golfing tours can also be organised to a secret golf course near by if you would like to wind down after a strenuous surf/work trip.

MORE INFO, HOW TO GET THERE & FAQ

SURF CONDITIONS

Seasonal conditions / Crowds

Our number one goal is to avoid crowds whenever possible. The early season (January-March) and the late season (October to December) are usually less crowded.

Or ask the guide to take you to the “less famous, less well known” waves to increase your chance of surfing with just the Nusa Dewata crew. Five to six people with it all to your self.

We don’t subscribe to the instant crowd factor.
