ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

The surf camp is located south of Siberut, in a small paradise island popularly known as Nyang Nyang (googlemaps: Pulau masokut). It is the best location to stay in Mentawai since we have access to more than 20 waves in record time. Even if conditions do not allow the departure of the boat, we would go to some of the best spots (e-bay, pitstops, beng beng, nipusy, bank vaults) walking from the surfcamp.

Also, you will enjoy the Sabbit Surfcamp experience staying in a traditional mentawai house called in local language "Uma".

You will know our customs and traditional food in a relaxed family atmosphere. All of it living on one heavenly setting, unique in the world: Coral reefs, crystal clear water, perfect waves, white sandy beaches ... and extraordinary community of locals who make you see the world through a different perspective. A unique experience with waves that you will never forget...

Sabbit mentawai surf camp history  is linked to the Lian Sabbit of the Saleleusik tribe.

It all starts years ago with the arrival of the first Australians to mentawai looking for a cheaper alternative to Charterboats surfers. So Sabbit started preparing his home to give them accommodation and trying to improve the family economy, that until then, was based on the work of the coconut for sale in the creation of oil (Kopra), hard work and a highly risked, which he used to do himself with his wife and four daughters.

The charismatic spirit of Sabbit and the extraordinary sensations experienced by living with him and his family has not left indifferent to his guests, who return year after year to visit the camp. Three years ago two of them began to help, which eventually led to what is nowdays the current surf camp. The real mentawai culture essence adding quality, comfort and hygiene that every tourist expects to enjoy a dream´s vacation.

We are a local surfcamp that results from the union of two Spanish guys with a respected and beloved mentawai  guy:  Sabbit Saleleuski.

The Camp

During your stay in Sabbit surfcamp you will live in a  traditional mentawai house (Uma). The house is located in an idyllic setting among palm trees, banana trees, mangos, papayas .., and less than ten meters from a beach with crystal clear waters and fine white sand. From the shore you can go paddling the famous wave E-bay, or if you prefer, snorkeling along the beautiful coral reef and delight with its different colors and fish that inhabit it.

Our comfortable uma is entirely built with materials obtained from the forest, wood and palm leaf roof. The house has a cozy porch, unique on the island, and is surrounded by lawn which is cared for by Sabbit daily.

We have five rooms: Four doubles and one for four people. All rooms are equipped with mosquito nets, fans, and power supply for 220V. In the back of the house are two bathrooms in two separate bungalows.


THE LIVING ROOM

Sabbit Menta Wai SurfcampIn the front of the house is the dining room and the room where the camp social life unfolds. It is a cozy space where you can relax a few meters from the sea, with magnificent views. You can enjoy a refreshing nap in a comfortable hammock, train your balance for surfing on slike- line or play paddle, freezbee, chess ... as well as join the locals people in traditional mentawai games.

Seasonal conditions

Waves

Although there are waves in Mentawai all year round, the best time to come is from March to November when the storms in southern Africa and Antartica generate a good swell that reach our shores and are transformed into some incredible waves.?

During March and April the waves are not very big but are consistent. The same occurs in october and november. The months between may and september are the best in terms of size and consistency. The winds are generally light and variable throughout the year making many  spots work at the same time and so to avoid  crowds.?

There are more than 20 spots in the area for all levels, from beginners to pros, and we will take you with our speedboat

JOURNEY

Ways to get to the camp

The first step is to get to Padang, capital of West Sumatra province.

You have several options:

Via Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur
Once in Padang the best option is spend the night there and catch the ferry on the next day (Mentawaifast). The mentawaifast ferry  sets off on Tuesdays Thursday and Saturdays so you should coordinate your arrival by plane on Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
Do not worry about anything because we can organize you airport pick up and transfer  to the hotel. On the next day, we will take you to the mentawaifast ferry for a very affordable price and with an excellent quality service.
Once in Siberut we will pick you up with our speedboat at  the ferry arrival and  drive you to the surf camp.

There is also the option of direct transfer from Padang to the surf camp in a speedboat.

Far more expensive but faster and  more comfortable option. (Check with us for prices).

Important details
What to bring to the surfcamp:

- High protection sunscreen
- At least two boards, including one for big waves.
- Wax
- At least 2 leash
- Mosquito repellent
- We recommend bringing a vitamin supplement or supplements such as protein shakes to
  recharge for the next day.
- Photocopy of passport
- Cash in rupees for daily expenses such as beer, soft drinks or photos. Last ATM is in Padang.
- Medicines you may occasionally need such as ibuprofen, paracetamol, etc ...
- Travel health insurance. Mandatory.
  Sabbit Mentawai Surf Camp is not responsible for any accidents that might result from surfing or
  any other activity you do on your own.
