Surf’s up is recognised as the number one surf training centre in the U.K. And how good is our coaching? Well just ask one of the many surfers we have taught to surf over the last 15 years, all of whom have left our sessions with a smile, and most have taken their technique to the next level and are still totally hooked on riding the waves. This is also why our surf club for the local kids, the Surf’s Up Boardriders, has five junior surfers who will compete as part of the British team in 2009.

Since 1995 we’ve been pioneering and developing new courses for all abilities. Take a look at what’s on offer this year from complete novice through to national competitor. New for this year - the Youth Development Programme and Video analysis at our new state of the art training facility.

Beginner
Learning to surf can be a frustrating business. Just trying to balance on the board lying down can be a challenge! That’s where we come in- we love surfing and we want you to as well. Once you get the hang of it surfing will become one of the most rewarding things you’ve ever done.

Improvers
“Improvers” is a general term we use for someone who has some previous surfing experience. It could be that you have just had a beginners lesson and got up a few times, or alternatively you’ve been successfully surfing in the white water and want to progress a bit quicker. Whatever your standard we have the perfect improver session for you.

Intermediate
You’ll already be a competent surfer in the white water, but are ready to take on unbroken waves. This can be a very frustrating phase in your surfing development but it offers the most reward. Catching your first unbroken wave and riding it across the face - it’s something that you never forget. Having a coach in the water with you is invaluable at this stage - someone to help you to read the wave, teach you to sit in the right spot, and then get you to to commit to paddling into the wave.

Taster
Aimed specifically at kids 7 yrs and younger. A chance to get a feel for the water and experience riding waves for the first time. Parent Warning - these kids will often be better than you by the end of one session!!

Weekender
t makes sense to maximise your time in the surf. You can spend weekend after weekend flapping around thinking you’re making progress when in reality you’re probably standing still. You might catch the odd good one - the ‘bring you back’ one, but you could be getting so much better.

Developer
Having seen what we can do in a one off session, imagine how much you’ll progress by doin a series of lessons! If you are committed to improving your technique it makes a lot of sense. We can cater for all skill levels on the course from beginner to higher level intermediate. We use the surfing skills you already have as a starting point and plan the five sessions around you. The developer course is the ultimate if you want to fast track your surfing progression.

Elite

PACKAGE A - Beginners Surfing Courses

The Surf’s Up way is to customise the sessions to meet the needs of you as an individual and make the learning fun and inspirational. That way you’ll learn quickly, have an amazing time and progress at lightening pace!

Here’s some of the things you’ll be doing in your first session.

We’ll give you loads of help and technical tips both in and out of the water, as well as plenty of positive encouragement along the way.

PACKAGE B - Improvers Surfing Courses

£26 Includes free use of surfboards and wetsuits and a full 2 hours in the water

To help you progress at top speed we have broken our “improvers” into three levels.

Novice Improver
You can just about get up but still topple off a fair bit. Or maybe you’ve had one session and feel you’re right on the verge of some great stand up rides! You’ve probably never felt like you’ve even been in control of the board under your feet and it’s as much a mystery to you as people on the shore that your standing at all!  More often than not before you even get on your feet, the board has hurtled off south and you’re doing your best to hang on in there!  And you probably walk to the top of the beach with your leash still attached to your ankle!  If this sounds like you- then please book in for the novice improver lesson and let us get to work.  

Improver
You’re starting to get the hang of it and standing up on most of your waves. You’re still having some classic wipeouts while trying to tame your board as it shots towards the beach and the people around you dive for cover. Improver sessions are all about board control and increasing the quality and lengths of your rides. You might even be ready for the basics of turning and getting the most speed out of your board. If this sounds like you; book in for an improver session and lets go to work on your technique to get you ripping up some longer rides with style!  

Competent Improver
You’re the master of the white water, board control is improving, your paddle is getting stronger by the session and you even manage to finish some of your waves with a dignified step off rather than a belly flop! Here’s the problem though; the zone beyond the white water is still a bit of a mystery to you and your not entirely sure which techniques will work when you get “out the back”. So if this sounds like; a competent white-water surfer who wants to take their surfing to the next level, then book yourself in for a competent improver session and the sky’s the limit!

PACKAGE C - Intermediate Surfing Courses

You’ll already be a competent surfer in the white water, but are ready to take on unbroken waves. This can be a very frustrating phase in your surfing development but it offers the most reward. The benefits are huge - and as instructors we recognise this. One of Kelly’s roles at Surf’s Up! is to develop the individual surfing skills of the instructors. And we love it - at every opportunity we grab Mohawk Man to give us some golden nuggets. It works - so less flapping, let’s use your limited time in the water constructively and get you ripping it up.

A training programme exclusive to Surf’s Up!

Be coached by Kelly O’ Toole, our New Zealand national level coach Level: You’re confident catching unbroken waves on custom boards.

Training: specific, goal oriented video analysis sessions - looking at the essential skills necessary to become a great surfer.

Example: Let’s take the bottom turn. You catch the wave and then drop down the face and then with a bit of speed head back up the wave for a top turn. Now there’s bottom turns and there’s bottom turns. It is very difficult to ride the wave properly without performing a ‘proper’ bottom turn. We’ve spent months with some of the British Junior Squads just focusing on this one skill - and trust me, these boys can surf!! The result? Their body position, board angles and speed are transformed allowing them to complete the rest of the wave in a more dynamic fashion.
