Santa Teresa is an ideal destination for those who are looking to connect deeply with nature and themselves. Whether you are looking for great surfing, get deeper into yoga, a romantic beach vacation, a family friendly destination or you enjoy traveling on your own, this is definitely the destination for you.

It is located in the Nicoya Peninsula – on the west coast of Costa Rica – very close to Malpaís and some hours south from Nosara and Tamarindo. Founded by local communities only some decades ago, and slowly grown into Surf and Yoga community, Santa Teresa hosts a unique mix of Ticos (Costa Rican people) and immigrants from all around the world who have turned this place into a very special spot on Earth.

When you arrive to Santa Teresa, the wonderful beaches will amaze you, most of them are still virgin and as natural as earthly possible, as well as the heart-stopping sunsets every evening. It is also a must-live experience for anyone who loves to explore and discover new places. BELIEVE LODGE The soul of the surf and yoga camp, ideal for all kind of travelers …  superb location, steps away from the beach. The 20,000 square foot property is located 2? walk from La Lora beach, one of the best surfing spots in town. Our front door is by the main road so we are walking distance to the best and newest restaurants, cafes and bars and one of the local  supermarkets (credit card accepted) of Santa Teresa. At the lodge we have 11 rooms divided in three different buildings combining all kind of bed room offerings for all kind of travelers: solo travelers, couples, friends and family are all welcomed. 
We have a swimming pool deck surrounded by a beautiful garden area with palms and native tress; 600 square foot yoga deck, chill out area and working space and private parking.  By the lodge we run El Patio Cafe @elpatiostcr opened from 8 AM to 2 PM to enjoy breakfast, smoothies and lunch. Free WiFi, security safe box, daily cleaning and shower towels are provided.

BELIEVE VILLAS Ideal for couples and small families who want more comfort and privacy. The property is 5? walk to the beach and less than 10? walk to Believe Lodge, in a quiet area surrounded by tropical forests . Each of the two apartments consist of one king size bed room upstairs, one queen size bed room downstairs, a private bathroom with hot water and a veranda with hammocks and chairs to take it easy all day. In between both apartments there is a fully equipped kitchen and dining area in a semi-open area integrated to the verandas to be shared by two apartments. The two studios feature one king size a/c bedroom, ensuite bathroom, private kitchen and a wide veranda with hammocks and dining area. Amenities include swimming pool and jacuzzi area, wireless internet, daily cleaning, air conditioning , hot water and private parking.

THE BEACHFRONT RESORT Ever dream of living in the beach? Be the first one to check the sea in the morning and enjoy the sunset in your backyard. Ideal for couples or families who want our higher standard of service and comfort. Large and comfortable rooms (ideal for two guests) or  bungalows (ideal for three or more guests) surrounded by tropical gardens just a few steps away from the ocean. Rooms have a private porch with a day bed and outdoor living room furniture, one queen bed and a private bathroom (no kitchen). Bungalows are  furnished with two king size beds and one single bed, all have private porches with hammocks and layback chairs (no kitchen). A short walk along the garden trails will lead you to the restaurant, pool area, spa and hammocks in front of the beach. Amenities include wireless internet, air conditioning, ceiling fans, hot water, security safe, mini-bar and coffee maker.

BELIEVE HOUSE Ideal for both large groups and for travelers who love sharing their experience with others on a beach house. Believe House is just by the Lodge and in front of El Patio Cafe, steps away from the beach. With its gorgeous surf inspired décor it is ideal for those who love to have their own space, routine, kitchen and the possibility of meeting others. The House features three rooms. Two of them are upstairs and they feature (each) one queen size bed and two bunk beds, air conditioning, fans, and en suite bathroom. The third room is downstairs with one king size bed and two single beds and private bathroom (not ensuite). The gem of the house is the open common space with a one-of-a-kind kitchen, dining table, and hammocks to relax during the day. Daily cleaning and Wi-Fi are complimentary and the best part is that you won’t have to rent a car since everything is nearby. At the front of the house is El Patio Cafe for an awesome breakfast and lunch.

SURF COURSE DETAILS

Our objective is that everyone, no matter his or her level, age or previous experience, can enjoy and learn how to surf. We want everyone to believe in his or her own capabilities and grow in confidence in the sea.

Safety is also our main priority. All our instructors are ISA and CPR certified and the surf classes are defined based on weather and sea conditions.This is to say, we go out surfing only if the conditions are safe for everyone; otherwise the session is rescheduled.

Classes are approximately 90 minutes long and will vary according to the level and previous experience of the students. Surfboard, rash guard and hydration during the surf lessons are always included.

The beaches of Santa Teresa are one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica and they are the perfect starting point for the surf lessons. Gentle foams will let you have the first sensation of this wonderful sport. Our challenge is to develop your skills so that you can gain independence and confidence in the water. We will focus on your balance on the board and make sure that you have all the necessary safety tips to get into the water: handling the board, managing wipeouts, etc.

Our policy is to have no more than three surfers per instructor, this is important to make sure that you are properly observed and receive a personalized feedback in the water.

Intermediate and advanced surfers will be introduced in the art of catching waves and developing “the surfer instinct”. First of all, your surf instructor will look for the best surfboard size according to your level (you will usually be using a smaller board than beginners).

We will focus on your paddle technique, on how to observe the sea and read the upcoming sets so that you are in the best spot, and on developing a fast and proper pop up. Furthermore, the instructor will be coaching you on how to turn to one side or another according to the wave, and evaluating your position on the board, your style and your balance…so you’d better get ready!

YOGA
It will not be all about surfing. The proposal is to discover the many benefits a mind-and-body balance has on our daily life. Yoga is a one-of-a-kind discipline that awakens a new lifestyle, far beyond your surf and yoga vacations in Costa Rica. Whether you are a beginner or have experience in the art of yoga, you will have amazing teachers who will guide you during the entire week. Turn your surf vacations in Santa Teresa into a Yoga Retreat by adopting the habit of a daily yoga practice!
The aim is to explore different types of yoga practices (i.e. Vinyasa and Ashtanga) and different teachers throughout the week. On one hand a daily yoga practice will enhance your strength and flexibility, and benefit your surfing. On the other hand it will give space to improve your breathing and the connection with your inner self, your concentration abilities and explore meditation techniques.
Yoga classes run daily at 9 am and 6.30 pm at Believe Lodge. They are  60? to 90’ long depending on the yoga class and teacher. Yoga mat and blocks are provided; just be on time and bring your own towel (optional).

The incredible biodiversity and great weather offers a great variety of activities to enjoy, such as Stand up paddle surfing, a rest day in the Montezuma waterfalls, canopy tours or trolling fishing in Malpais, scuba diving, quad surf trip to Manzanillo or visiting a Natural Reserve, are some of the so many alternatives that this region can offer you here.

CANOPY IN MAILPAIS
Doing canopy in Costa Rica is a no-miss experience; an ideal activity to enjoy it with your family or friends, as there is neither age limits nor especial conditions to be able to participate. Slide from one tree to another above the green cushion of jungle is unforgettable and vibrant. Guides are experienced and very gentle, so that everyone will feel at ease and comfortable.

SANTA TERESA HORSEBACK RIDING
Definitely an experience not to be missed. It is always part of our schedule, discovering and enjoying every corner of Santa Teresa beach on horseback during sunset.

REST DAY IN MONTEZUMA WATERFALLS
Visiting new places is also something that we encourage everyone to do. A few minutes away from Santa Teresa there is a magical spot surrounded by pure nature. You will enjoy the waterfalls, fresh water and a wonderful small town to hang out after the refreshing experience. This is the perfect “rest day” in the middle of your surf week. 

TROLLING FISHING IN MALPAIS
Malpais is a small fishermen town. They take off every morning from the small natural port searching for the catch of the day. Take a full morning off, enjoy a wonderful journey along the coasts of Malpais and Cabo Verde Natural Reserve and be part of the fishermen crew for some hours. And of course, we can cook the catch in the evening, or you can just practice sport fishing. 

STAND UP PADDLE
Stand Up Paddle is a great discipline to continue to nourish the body and mind balance and to go deeper into the wilderness.

It is the perfect place to relax in natural hot springs and enjoy the adrenaline of white-water rafting, waterfall rappelling, and canopy tours. Also, close to Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica keeps one of its most precious wonders in the middle of a rain forest: Rio Celeste.

HOW TO REACH ARENAL VOLCANO?
Domestic flight from San Jose International Airport (25’) to Arenal / La Fortuna Airport or via inland transportation (4 hr. from SJO, 6 hr. from Santa Teresa, U$S 60 one way per person).

MONTEVERDE | COSTA RICA
Another magical spot inland Costa Rica; a place of misty rainforests, coffee plantations, monkeys and great biodiversity. At 1,440 m above sea level, Monteverde receives clouds and the necessary humidity to create a unique ecosystem. You can discover Monteverde hiking throughout the forest, trails and hanging bridges, horse-riding or through exciting canopy tours.

HOW TO REACH MONTEVERDE?
Take a domestic flight from San Jose Airport SJO (25’) to Arenal / La Fortuna airport or via inland transportation (4 hr. from SJO or 6 hr. from Santa Teresa, U$S 60 one way). If you are already in Arenal / La Fortuna airport you can also take a taxi boat (30’) or inland transportation (1 hr.).

BOCAS DEL TORO | PANAMA
Located on the Caribbean coast of Panama, Bocas del Toro is one of those places you will never forget/remember forever. It captivates visitors with its amazing beaches, its biodiversity and the great vibe of the people who live on the many islands of “Bocas”. Wondering around Isla Colon, discovering Bocas del Drago and Starfish Beach, or deep-board-snorkelling and diving in Cabo Zapatilla, are some of the many things you can do in Bocas del Toro. If you stay for two days or for a whole year, you will think it wasn’t enough!

HOW TO REACH BOCAS DEL TORO?
Take a domestic flight from San Jose International Airport SJO in Costa Rica (45’) or Panama International Airport PTY (45’).

 JOURNEY

---

The best option is to arrive at San Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, the capital city of Costa Rica. From SJO you have more options of land shuttles and local flights to Santa Teresa or anywhere in Costa Rica. The second option is to fly to Liberia (LIR), in the northwest region of Costa Rica, one hour away from Tamarindo and six hours away from Santa Teresa (see Costa Rica map, on your right).

HOW TO ARRIVE TO SANTA TERESA BY PLANE?

SAN JOSE (SJO) – TAMBOR (TMU):
Take a 25’ flight from SJO to Tambor (TMU), this is the closest airport to Santa Teresa, one hour away by land transportation. A one way fly may cost U$S 80 to U$S 120. We can book the flights for you or you can do this directly at FlySansa.com. Do not book via NatureAir.com.
Once in TMU we can arrange a pick-up for USD 60. Our driver will be waiting for you holding a sign with your name on it. If your flight is delayed we will make sure he waits for you. You can always choose not to book the pick up and bargain with local drivers. You may pay U$S 45-50, not cheaper than that, and you take the risk of not finding any driver upon arrival. Note that TMU airport is just a runway in the middle of the jungle.

LIBERIA (LIR) TO TAMBOR (TMU):
During high season (Dec-Apr) flysansa.com has one or two direct flight connecting Liberia (LIR) to Tambor (TMU. Beyond high season there might be no direct flights connecting LIR to TMU. You will have to fly via San Jose SJO and then connect to TMU. The whole flight itinerary can take up to 4 hours and around U$S 180 for a one way trip. In this case we suggest the 6 hour shuttle bus connecting Liberia with Santa Teresa (high season daily departures at 9 AM or 2 PM, low season only at 9 AM with minimum two passengers) or renting a car. We can also help you booking the shuttle or renting a car. Footnote: life is easier when flying via San Jose SJO.

HOW TO ARRIVE TO SANTA TERESA BY LAND?

SAN JOSE (SJO ) – SANTA TERESA:
Direct land shuttles leave from downtown San Jose at 6 am (and 2 pm on high season) and from SJO Airport at 6.30 am (and 2.30 pm on high season), and take 6 to 7 hours to arrive to Santa Teresa. It will drive you from SJO to the port of Puntarenas where you hop off, grab your bags and take a 90? ferry trip to Paquera. The trip is super easy and nice. Once in Paquera you will hop on to a shuttle bus that will drive you to to Santa Teresa. The cost for a one way trip is  USD 60. We suggest booking this through us in case your trip is delay and you need someone to handle the rescheduling of your trip.

LIBERIA (LIR) – SANTA TERESA:
Daily shuttles depart at 8 am (and 2 pm during high season) and requires a minimum of two passengers to depart and the trip usually costs USD 60.

OTHER DESTINATIONS:
If you are coming from Montezuma, Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio or any other destination within Costa Rica let us know and we will help you organize your transportation.

WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST WAY TO ARRIVE TO SANTA TERESA?

Public buses connect San Jose with Santa Teresa twice a day. They leave San Jose downtown station at 6 AM and 2 PM and make their stop in Alajuela (nearby SJO Airport) at 6.30 AM and 2.30 PM. They usually take 7 hours to arrive to Santa Teresa and a one way trip costs U$S 15.  The bus is usually punctual but you better be at the bus stop 15? to 30? before and you should double check departing times at https://www.laterminalcostarica.com/.

Taking the bus at SJO Airport can be a little bit tricky or dodgy, specially for solo travelers visiting Costa Rica or Central America for the first time. You must take a taxi from SJO Airport and ask the driver to drop you off at “Puente Villa Bonita” (Villa Bonita bridge) bus stop. Taxi should cost around U$S 10 and you will have to wait the bus by the highway as shown in the picture on the left. There is no proper bus stop, signage nor shelter. I would only take this option if you are used to traveling solo or if you are really on a tight budget. Otherwise, go for the shuttle bus that will pick you up at SJO Airport and we can always contact them directly if it is needed.

IMPORTANT
Before booking make sure you have planned your logistics from your arrival airport to Santa Teresa. Avoid misunderstanding and incurring in costs that you can avoid if you plan accordingly.

Plan your arrival flight as early as possible, in order to make it to the land shuttles or local flights. Otherwise it may be necessary to schedule a night in SJO, as there are no shuttles nor flights during the evening (i.e. after 3 pm). Similarly, your departure flight should be planned the latest you can in your departing day so that you can leave your hotel in Santa Teresa early in the morning and arrive early in the afternoon to SJO for your international flight. Otherwise you should plan your last night in San Jose and not in Santa Teresa.
