We are a backpackers hostel and surfcamp in Lagos in south west Portugal. Whether you are holidaying with friends or travelling solo we offer a social accommodation experience, perfect for making new friends along the way.
We are located a 10 - 15 minute walk from the Lagos old town – close enough to the great beaches and nightlife Lagos has to offer, but with the emphasis on getting away from the crowded streets and just taking the time out to lie in a hammock by the pool – something you won’t find in any other hostel in Lagos - our location offers the best of both worlds.
We have great shared common areas to hang out with other guests; alternatively you can get out into the garden and get your tan on, or challenge someone to a game of ping pong. Our roof terrace is a great place to chill with a book, and you can also join our regular sunrise and sunset yoga sessions.
We also have a kitchen where breakfast is served every morning, including our famous pancakes, and you can prepare your own food, but don’t forget to join us for our great family dinners prepared by our in-house chef, all fresh and locally sourced.
Some of the highlights of the Bura Surfhouse take place in our pool bar where you can enjoy a cold beer, one of our refreshing cocktails, great food, and the chance to get to know the staff and your fellow guests. We love getting to know all of you and hope you will feel at home with us.
Our bar is a chilled out environment to enjoy a few drinks with new friends after a day getting exhausted in the surf or just lying in the sun. It closes each evening at 10.30pm when the party shifts into town so we can respect our neighbours and those who are getting up early.
While we definitely enjoy a few beers and a mojito or two, we are not a wild party hostel and our ethos is about showing you there is a lot more to Lagos than the inside of a bar–so please bear this in mind when choosing to book with us.
Please note at Bura Surfhouse we have a strict over 18 policy.

THE WINE
On the final day we will head out into the Portuguese countryside to an organic vineyard for an afternoon of wine tasting. You’ll be shown how the wine is produced, and then get to settle in for an afternoon sampling different varieties accompanied by various petiscos to pair up the wines.
THE GUIDED BIKE TOUR
On this tour you will get to see the most important sights and learn about the rich history of this small town, once one of Portugal’s most important trading ports. You will also enjoy the spectacular views from the cliffs that surround the town, all this while brushing off the cobwebs on a leisurely bike ride, to get you ready for the more strenuous activities to come.
THE STAND - UP PADDLEBOARDING / WAKEBOARDING
Explore the rugged coastline that lines Lagos with its historic caves and grottos on a paddleboard. No experience necessary as we’ll give you a short lesson beforehand.. If the conditions are a little wild, we’ll head inland to a Portuguese lake so you can explore the Algarvian countryside. We have the option to wakeboard at our cable park here in Lagos if conditions are not optimum for paddleboarding.
THE HIKE
Our guides will take you on a brisk coastal walk from Vale Centianes Beach to Marinha Beach, to the east of Lagos, taking in the Seven Hanging Valleys and also including a swim into the famous Benagil caves. To top off the afternoon you will have a picnic dinner on the beach to take in the stunning Algarve sunset.
COASTEERING
You will be taken out to an isolated spot on the South coast of the Algarve to test your limits in this adventure involving swimming, rock climbing, and cliff jumping. Equally exciting for experienced adventurers, or for those with a fear of heights looking to push themselves beyond their comfort zone!
Characterization of surroundings/region
We are located in the beautiful town of Lagos in the Portuguese Algarve. This is a small, historic town on the south coast, surrounded by beaches, cliffs and grottos which offers a wide variety of activities and also has a lively nightlife.
We still consider Lagos one of Europe’s best kept secrets!
With some of Europe’s best surf on its doorstep, Lagos naturally has a chilled out surf vibe that attracts travellers, holiday makers and surfers alike. You can spend your days exploring the awesome beaches and dramatic cliff faces that surround the city and your nights in the quaint old town where bars spill out on to the cobbled streets. With great food to suit every budget and super cheap happy hours (€1.80 a pint!), it’s the perfect place to spend a few days… or weeks… or months!
Something not to miss are the amazing grottos of the Ponta da Piedade area of Lagos where you can explore the incredible rock formations, caves and secluded beaches easily reached by fishing boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Don’t forget to take a load of sun cream and your camera!
For a local experience you can hit the markets on a Saturday morning; you’ll find amazingly fresh fish and produce for equally amazing prices.
Lagos is all about the great outdoors, so whether you are coming from home and work or if you have been travelling for a while in big cities this is your chance to get outside and enjoy the wide open spaces and beautiful landscape.
Ways to get to the camp
Fly to Faro airport, and we can arrange shared airport transfers for you (€30 return - they take around 2 hours) or a private transfer. You can also fly to Lisbon or Seville and catch the bus to Lagos.
