ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Drop In Surf Lodge is surrounded by palm trees and is located in a small neighbourhood a few minutes outside of Kuta. One of the most beautiful beaches, Tanjung Aan as well as the Surf spots Seger and Gerupuk Bay are only a short scooter-ride from Drop In.

CAMP CHARACTER

Drop In Surf Lodge offers space for 12 guests. The Lodge has a cosy, familiar atmosphere with all the comfort you need to relax and unwind during your holiday. The main languages in the camp are English as well as German (the three owners all speak german). Drop In is also the home of four friendly dogs that can be good entertainment.  

CAMP OPERATOR

We are three girls from Switzerland and Germany who love Lombok, its people and its waves. Our paths crossed in Kuta Lombok in 2012 and we soon realized that we all share the same dream - showing other people how beautiful Lombok is and giving them a home base from where they can discover the island. It started with building a house for ourselves and the Drop In Café which opened in spring 2014. Shortly after the first bungalows followed which opened in spring 2015. Our last step is following now with another 3 bungalows, the swimming pool and the chill area resulting in our Drop In Surf Lodge – a surf oasis with all the comfort or how we call it: a home away from home! 

ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING

ACCOMMODATION TYPES

Our six bungalows unite local features like the Alang-Alang roof with Western standards. All bungalows have a/c, ceiling fans, a bathroom with a hot water open-air shower as well as a private veranda to relax and enjoy the atmosphere during sunsets.

We have two different categories of Bungalows; either the “Tropical Vintage” Bungalows which charm with their cosiness or the a bit bigger “Tropical Industrial” bungalows which have a bit more space and have a slightly industrial touch. The pool area with its sunbeds, cosy daybeds and lounge invite to linger and relax after an exciting surf session. Integrated in the main house is the Drop In Café with its yummy home made cakes and smoothies, which is perfect for a light lunch or a sweet treat during the day. 

Our Drop In Surf Garage is equipped with a variety of soft- and hardtops in different lengths, leashes, rashguards, zinc and wax. Moreover, we sell some well-known Surf bikini labels. 

CATERING

Included in the surf packages is daily a healthy breakfast (Coffee, fresh juice and a choice of: eggs with home made bread, müesli with fruits, yogurt and home made granola or pancakes) as well as two dinners: the welcome dinner on Sunday nights as well as one BBQ on the beach. Our Drop In Café is open daily until 6pm and offers fresh sandwiches and salads as well as yummy home made cakes. Kuta itself (5 minutes by scooter) has a wide variety of restaurants with Indonesian as well as Western cuisine to very reasonable prices.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

Lombok offers waves for every level. Our teacher and guides make sure that our guests are at the right spot at the right time. The time and spot for the session will be announced the day before and depends greatly on the tide and the swell. Transport and material is organised by the teachers and the lesson itself is held in small groups: one teacher for two guests! This ensures that every guest gets maximal amount of waves and instructions cut to their personal skills and needs. A surf session takes about 3.5 to 5 hours including transport, short boat trip and information at the spot. The lessons and instructions are held in English.

SURF MATERIALS

The whole equipment is included in the beginner and intermediate lessons: Surfboard (size depending on the skills), leash, rashguard, wax. Moreover we also offer surfboard insurance. The material can also be used after the sessions.

Surfboard-rental 10 Euro / day (e.g. for guiding).

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Massage at Drop In Lodge or Yoga outside of Drop In Lodge (each app. 10 Euro). We also organize trips around the island, e.g. waterfalls, snorkelling, trekking, fishing trips, local villages, etc. (prices depend on number of persons joining). 

MORE INFO, HOW TO GET THERE & FAQ

Gerupuk bay (4km): bay with up to 5 different spots from beginner/intermediate up to advanced surfers only. All spots are reef breaks (most overgrown with seagrass and deep water). Depending on the swell there are always a few working spots!

Seger (1km): Seger Left for intermediates, Seger Right for intermediate/advanced only (reef break that works best at small swell and no wind).

West of Kuta are a row of great spots (6-15km): Are Guling (reef, best in rainy season) for intermediate / advanced, Mawi (a fast wave for advanced surfers only; reef), Selong Belanak: a nice sandy beach break for beginners.

Seasonal conditions

Subtropical climate with rainy season from December – April and a dry season from May – November. All year round 27-32°C air temperature with high humidity during the rainy season. The dry season has a humidity around 50-60% and more wind. Water temperature all year around a minimum of 25°C which makes it perfect to surf only in board shorts and bikini! The dry season can be windy, while the rainy season is usually wind still and offers glassy waves!

Crowd factor and local people

Some spots can get crowded during high season (June – October), however our teachers try to evade the ‘rush hours’ in the spots and now also some secret spots with few surfers only! Our teachers are local and know the coast and the other local surfers since kids and a relaxed, joking atmosphere with local and other surfers is the usual picture.

SURROUNDINGS / REGION

Characterization of surroundings/region

Kuta is on the South coast of Lombok only 25min. away from the international airport. Beautiful beaches with white sand and bays scatter along the coast and untouched coral reefs are found all around the small islands (Gilis). Waterfalls, rice paddies, tropical forest as well as the famous volcano Mount Rinjani can be explored inland. People in Kuta speak English quite well, however if you plan to travel remote places without a guide, a few phrases of Indonesian are recommended. The currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (1 Euro = app. 15’000 IDR).

Recommended vaccines: Hepatitis A & B, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio, and Measles.

Health advise: the risk of malaria varies depending on the region as well as the season; during the dry season there are only few mosquitos and malaria is rare on Lombok. Dengue is another mosquito-transmitted disease that can be found on Bali as well as on Lombok. Therefore it is anyways recommended to protect from mosquito bites and to bring an emergency-malaria medication (please talk to your doctor before traveling). 

Activities and facilities

Trips around the island: beaches with snorkelling, diving, stand up paddling, Kite surfing (during the windy season July – August), boat trips, fishing, trekking, waterfalls... There are a few small bars with live band and parties, however the nightlife can’t be compared to Bali or Gili Trawangan.

Ways to get to the camp

International flights either to Bali or directly to Lombok. Lombok is only 30min. by plane from Bali and several flights per day are available for about 30 Euro.

A valid passport is needed for Indonesia as well as a visa depending on your nationality. Information can be found at your local embassy.

Course description for Beginners:

You have never been on a surfboard or you have it tried a while back? Then the beginner level will be perfect for you! Before going into the water, you will learn how to take off (stand up) and get information about the spot and how to handle the board. Before going into the wave, you will learn how to handle your board. Then the teacher will help you catch your first waves. The goal is to manage the take off and get a feeling for the waves and the surfboard! In the two theory lessons you will learn a lot about surfing as well as the surf-etiquette, which will help you to react correctly in the water in any given situation.

Course description for Intermediates:

You already know how to paddle, take off and maybe even surf green waves? Then Intermediate classes will be good for you. At this level the focus lies on learning to read the waves, improving your timing and making smooth take offs while cruising along the wave. The teachers will mainly give you tips how to improve your surfing and what details to pay attention to in order to make steady progress at your surfing skills.

Description for Guiding:

Making fast take offs and turns are no problem for you? You like bigger and faster waves, but you still wish to be accompanied by a guide who knows the spot and its wave by heart? When booking surf guiding you will be brought to all the spots that will make your heart beat faster. Our guides will introduce the spots with all its tricks to you and surf along with you. Adventure, pushing your boundaries and lots of fun are a must!

If you book surf guiding, you will bring your own surfboard. We provide the transport to/from the spot and all the organisation around surfing.
