ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Essaouira offers beach break waves and a sand bottom. The big bay of Essaouira provides kilometers long waves for you to surf. The waves increase in height the further away from the medina you are. Our surf center is right on the spot where you can start surfing and where the waves are small to medium-sized, which is perfect for surf lessons. Within few kilometers from Essaouira you will find some different adventurous surf spots, let us guide you off the beaten track!

CAMP CHARACTER

Start the morning with our fresh surfers breakfast. Then head to the beach for a morning surf, maybe topped up with a yoga session, that will freshen your spirit for the rest of the day! After a typical Moroccan lunch in the medina or at one of the laid-back beach clubs you can opt in for another lesson or activity, go surfing on your own or just chill out with a beer or fresh smoothie. In the evening you can catch up with other guests or go out on your own. Have a flavoured dinner full of amazing spices with or without live music, as you like… Enjoy the night at the rooftop terrace with other guests, go for a drink somewhere or just go to bed early to get a proper sleep!

CAMP OPERATOR

Explora is founded by Nasser and Sara. They met each other in Egypt, caught up in Tarifa, lived there for a couple of years and ended up in Essaouira to set up Explora. Their dream was to share their passion for the ocean, to bring people together and to create a 100 % surf vibe for their visitors. The surfy couple have two beautiful kids, Leila (4) and Samir (6). They already know the drill of travelling the world and chasing the wind!

The team is formed of a mixture of Moroccan and European surf dudes and ladies. Every team member is chosen for being kind, patient and open. The entire team is devoted to water sports and fully certified. Explora team members will tell you everything you want to know about kites, surf, surf gear, other sports, the Moroccan culture, secret spots, language and food. Weekly or even daily team members hook up with Explora guests to go out for drinks and dinners. Explora organises a traditional Moroccan dinner for the team and guests every week, usually on Saturdays!

We like to introduce you to our very own surf house! Sleep and chill out like a king or queen in your private room, the downstairs lounge or on the sunny terrace. Discover the colourful medina and breath the Arabic vibe.. The six rooms of the riad are named and decorated after famous world class water sports destinations: you will be sleeping in Cape Town, Tatajuba, Sicily, Kenya, Zanzibar or Montenegro. How cool is that? Catch up with other water fanatics and meet the staff. The super sweet ladies Zaira and Aunty answer all your questions, prepare an amazing breakfast for you and make your beds daily with military precision.

Morocco is well-known for their mind-blowing cuisine. In Essaouira this is topped up with an amazing range of delicious fresh fish and seafood! Enjoy the spices, the always-warm bread, tajines, falafel, couscous, lamb, chicken, beef, crepes, local beers, whine, tasty veggies and much more…

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

The beginner course is 12 hours standard, usually 2 or 4 hours a day, but you can add as much lessons as you want to improve your tricks & skills! We dare you to surf as much as you can ;-)

In the course you’ll learn everything about the wind, the water, the waves, safety, rippin’, rolls, tacks, board control, picking the right wave, … enough to do, surf’s up!

We have softtop beginner boards as well as advanced boards available. You can also bring your own boards and use our storage services.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Seasonal conditions

Winter: bigger waves, main surf season

Summer: medium-sized waves, surf season

We recommend to wear a 3-4 mm wetsuit from December to May; June to November a 2-3 mm wetsuit. The water temperature varies between 17ºC up to 21ºC in summer.

Essaouira is always sunny, especially in summer! Summer temperatures between 22-32 degrees Celsius, winter temperatures vary between 15-21 degrees Celsius. The cool breeze of the Atlantic keeps the summers rather cool in Essaouira. Bring warm clothes for cool nights or big winds!

Crowd factor and local people

You will share the waves with likeminded people, there is plenty of space for everyone but you won’t get lonely! Locals always share the waves with you, they love it that you come to visit their home spot!

Morocco is super affordable and tourist operators speak English and French. Moroccans speak French as their second language.

You can also opt for an argan oil tour, day tours to the surroundings of Essaouira, a visit to Marrakech, or just wander around in the beautiful colourful old medina of Essaouira and the big, authentic fisher port.

JOURNEY

Ways to get to the camp

From Essaouira Airport it is only a half an hour ride away to the old medina of Essaouira. For a surcharge our driver will pick you up from Marrakech or Agadir also, which is about 3 hours driving from Essaouira. Let us know and our driver will pick you up!

You can also take the bus from Supratours or CTM which are reliable, modern, quick and at affordable rates.

Important details

Arriving in Morocco is a show in itself. Check out the desert, the sands, the green and red colours of Marrakech, the breathtaking road from Agadir to Essaouira or the small, relaxed airport at Essaouira!
