SURF CONDITIONS
Breaks directly at the main spot and at nearby spots

Famara beach is a 3-kilometer sandy break located within short walking distance of all our accommodation options. It is Lanzarote’s most popular spot, and also the best one for learners and improvers in Canary Islands, thanks to its numerous uncrowded peaks.

There are various other reef breaks in Famara and within less than 30 minutes’ drive of Famara, on the West and East Coast of Lanzarote, for more advanced surfers. They offer top-quality waves year-round and some of them host international surf contests on a regular basis (El Quemao Class, La Santa Pro etc.)

Seasonal conditions

Lanzarote receives consistent swell 12 months of the year – we never have a flat day here! We usually receive larger swells between the months of September and May, but thanks to the particular moon-shaped layout and sand bank structure of Famara beach it is possible to surf even when the swell is big. On the rare occurrences when due to stormy conditions, waves are too rough in Famara, we travel to secondary spots.

As most surf places, Lanzarote is a fairly windy island, especially between February and August; however, Famara beach offers nice waves even in windy conditions, and for more advanced surfers we always find a spot where the wind blows offshore. We do also get glassy conditions very often, especially between end of August and December.

The mild water and air temperatures on the island make it an ideal place to surf all year: air temperature oscillates between 18-25 Celsius grades in the winter, and 25-30 Celsius grades in the summer. Water temperatures rarely goes below 18 Celsius grades in the winter and rises up to 24-25 Celsius grades in the warmer months, when it is possible to surf in board shorts.

Crowd factor and local people

Famara is a very sociable little town where people of all nationalities join to surf and kite surf in a laid back atmosphere. There is no localism on Famara beach and surfers are welcome no matter their level. Thanks to its many peaks, the surf at Famara beach is never crowded even when there are a lot of people in the water.

You may encounter localism on some of the most popular reef breaks but for those of you doing the surf safari with us, we will explain how to avoid it and will always take you to uncrowded spots. Surfing with a local guide will also make it much easier for you to make the most of your surf sessions.

SURROUNDINGS / REGION

Characterization of surroundings/region

Lanzarote is the most eastern of the Canary Islands, only 150 kilometres away from the Moroccan coast and a 2-hour flight from mainland Spain. It forms part of the Spanish territory and as such, it is fully integrated into the European Union: local currency is the Euro, local language is Spanish, and no visa is needed for travellers from the Union. With regards to medical cover all you need is your European social security card, although we do always recommend that you subscribe an additional travel insurance policy for a full cover including repatriation etc. No specific vaccination is required here, there is no dangerous fauna, and it is an incredibly safe and relaxed place.

Famara is located on the North shore of Lanzarote, in a natural reserve. It is a small surfing town and is located a 25-minute drive from Lanzarote’s capital city and airport in Arrecife. It is also strategically located within less than 45 minutes’ drive of all the main attractions on the island: the volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes, the ferry to La Graciosa island in Orzola, the more touristy resorts of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca with their beautiful snorkelling beaches, the emblematic Mirador del Rio, etc.

Tourism is the main source of income for local people. Cost of living here is low and you will be able to eat and drink out for cheap.

Activities and facilities

Lanzarote is a great place for snorkelling, scuba diving, cycling, trekking, and generally speaking all outdoor and water sports. The island hosts several marathons, cycling races and ironman races each year. It also bursts with truly unique highlights which will leave you speechless, from Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes’ volcanic caves, to the Timanfaya Natural park’s lava fields, the Mirador del Río’s amazing viewpoint over the whole north shoreline, the magic of La Graciosa island, the beautiful swimming beaches of the south shore (Papagayo, Playa Quemada…), the natural pools of Charco del Palo and Caletón Blanco on the east coast, and many more. Lastly Lanzarote is also famous for its delicious white wine and gastronomy, and if you are looking for animated nightlife and great, cheap shopping you will have plenty to choose from in Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen.
