ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

Macaronis Resort is situated on Siniai Island, just off the coast of North Pagai Island in the southern region of the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia. Located centrally between Katieit on South Sipora (Lances surfing area) and Sibegau Island nearby South Pagai (Thunders surfing area). Macaronis Resort is in a very remote area, 120 nautical miles from Padang, West Sumatra. The largest village and port on North Pagai Island is Sikakap, with passenger ferry transits to-from Padang. From Sikakap a speed boat transfers guests to Macaronis Resort. The resort itself is built along-side picturesque Silabu salt water lagoon, just across the bay from legendary Macaronis wave. Macaronis wave breaks in Pasangan Bay, located just outside of the lagoon. The resort is 5 km from the closest village, Silabu, which is 3 km inland on the edge of an arterial river system.

During Southern hemisphere winter months Macaronis can be surfed almost every day, and during summer months Macaronis remains consistent; 3 – 6 feet is perhaps the ideal swell size. Pasongan Bay has options for all levels of surfers, even for absolute beginners who have never surfed before! Fish Fingers is the perfect wave for learning to surf on our soft top surf boards, breaking just 150m away from the resort entrance, and Mini Macas is a Gem for the kids and somebody seeking a mellow fun left, if Macas is over 3-4 feet. In summer months when there are not many charters operating, we can visit a larger variety of waves in the Southern region including Roxies (likes West swell) and Thunders, which is a swell magnet and works best in small long period swells (ie. 1.2m @ 15 sec and above).

Out on the deck we have large shaded cubbies to store your surf boards and surf gear, plus outdoor shower, and lines to hang your wet gear.

Located on the ground level is the resort Bar & Restaurant with professional chefs serving 3 fresh and delicious meals daily, inclusive in all packages. The Resort’s full bar is a favorite gathering spot, where our lovely staff serve mixed drinks, Indonesian beer, imported Australian wine, and snacks all day.

The Bar & Restaurant is located on the ground floor within the communal entertainment area. There is a choice of either indoor, or outdoor seating by the pool to enjoy your meal or relax with a beer or cocktail in hand.
A twice weekly outdoor BBQ under the stars (weather permitting) is a highlight of every trip, with a delicious buffet of BBQ’d specialties delicious sides, salads, sauces, and desserts. The bar serves a variety of cocktails, red and white wine, spirits, beer, espresso, and snacks. Just ask for your special drink request and our bar staff can prepare it for you (subject to availability of ingredients).

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

During peak season, you will most likely witness several predominant swells come and go. As the swell rises, Macaronis grows from medium size (fun for everybody), and gradually becomes more intense suiting those surfers with a little more experience. On large swells, people are more likely to spread out surfing different local breaks, while the more experienced surfers get their share of barrels at Macaronis or Greenbush. Greenbush works best in South swells 180 – 200 degrees, which are generated by low pressure systems hitting the West coast of Australia, with swell refracting in a North direction, more common in summer months or early season. Macaronis works in any S-SW swell direction; it is more of a barrel during South swells, and with swells @ 200 – 210 degrees it gains its reputation of being akin to a skate park, rippable long workable walls with various barrel sections.

All surfboard rentals include fins and a leash. Check out the board models and dimensions below with full descriptions of each board from Firewire. Periodically, as we get in new boards, older boards will also be put up for sale. We always try to keep a good variety, with 2-3 deliveries annually. A big thanks to Firewire for their support!

The resort is stocked up with recreational equipment to make exploring and enjoying the local environment easy for all guests. Kayaks, paddle boards, fishing equipment, snorkeling gear, and more are available for use free of charge so the whole family can get out and enjoy the surroundings.
Included in trip packages are speed boat rides with guides for any activity you would like to arrange including village visits, snorkeling trips, fishing trips, and exploring. The resort hosts and guides offer their expertise in equipment and local knowledge of the best spots for fishing and snorkeling.
There are two nearby beaches for exploring as well. One you can walk directly to from the resort out to the point where beautiful large shells can be found among the coral. A longer stretch of white sand beach extends around the bay across the small channel which you can get to by paddle board, kayak, swimming, or a quick boat ride.

There are a number waves within close proximity to the resort. Macaronis is a perfect, consistent left hand wave that works on all tides, big and small swells, and most wind conditions. There is a fun right hand beach break ideal for beginners out front and several intermediate reef breaks in the area, as well as a few serious reef breaks that serve up the deepest, longest, hair raising barrels you could imagine. 

Seasonal conditions

April – October
is regarded as the most consistent time for larger waves in the Mentawai Islands and Macaronis. This is when the Indian Ocean is producing storms regularly and swell is usually more intense from all directions. May – September will likely book out the quickest

March & November
are considered shoulder months, where world class surf can still regularly be scored with less people around. March especially offers a great opportunity, as warmer weather and optimal surf conditions keeps most surfers in the Southern hemisphere closer to home

December – February
is the Summer Season, where glassy surf in the 2-4 ft range is still common, with low or no crowds and occasional larger swells. Dominant South swells are ideal for Macas and Greenbush. At this time you can book to take part in our annual Surf Coaching Clinics held in January and February, which include surf coaching and photography package.

Ways to get to the camp

Mentawai Fast ferry departs Padang at 6.30 am on Fridays (via Sikakap) and returns to Padang the same day with arrival scheduled at 6.30 pm, servicing our most popular trip duration of 8 Surfing Days / 7 Resort Nights (highly recommended). For groups of 10 or more, we sometimes can provide a custom transfer via Tuapejat on Monday at either the beginning or end of a trip to make the trip duration 10 or 11 nights. View our trip schedule below for trips that may be starting or ending in Tuapejat on a Monday accommodating a 10 or 11-night trip (currently available: June 11 – 21 & July 16 – 26, 2021). Due to early morning departures and late arrivals back to Padang, your flight needs to arrive in Padang 1 day before your resort Check-in and depart 1 day after your resort Check-out date, requiring transit nights in Padang which are convenient to break-up and rest between travel.

Your international flight should arrive at one of these airports in order to get to Padang:
1. Jakarta (or via Bali), Indonesia, Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK)
2. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)

Travel Insurance is Compulsory

Any changes made to your booking less than 90 days before commencement will result in a change fee (See Clause 4). We highly recommend travel insurance be taken out 3 months before booking commencement in case there is a need to reschedule your booking (Eg. illness, injury or family emergency).
