Summary
The village of Porto da Cruz is located on the north coast of Madeira Island, between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches in Porto da Cruz are especially suitable for beginner surfers, as they are the only ones with volcanic black sand with surfable waves.
Madeira Surf Camp is surrounded by banana plantations, vineyards, yet it is only 15 km from the International Airport and 30 km from the center of Funchal. The village of Porto da Cruz still preserves its traditions, with a relaxed lifestyle and a very hospitable local culture. The beach and all necessary services are just a few meters from the Surf Camp.
Being located in a rural area, there are several outdoor activities that you can do, such as canyoning, trail running, mountain biking, paragliding, fishing, go-karting, among others.
The village has several restaurants where you can try the regional gastronomy, such as fresh fish, seafood and other traditional dishes from Madeiran cuisine, as well as wines and spirits. On the island of Madeira there are almost no crowds, in fact there are not many local surfers. The north coast has the most consistency and exposure to the North Atlantic ripples and the widest range of waves and to the various levels of surfing.
The island offers a vast amount of waves just minutes away, from long, soft waves suited to beginners to extreme surfing conditions for "big wave riders".

ABOUT THE SURF CAMP
LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS
The village is surrounded by volcanic black sand beaches, ideal for those who want to take surf lessons and learn to surf in Madeira Island.
The village does not have a very busy nightlife like other surf destinations in Portugal, however if you are looking for a closer contact with nature and a relaxed lifestyle, then this is your surfcamp.
CAMP CHARACTER
Madeira Surf Camp is a hostel type accommodation in the village of Porto da Cruz. It is situated right in the middle of the village of Porto da Cruz.
The Madeira Surf Camp was founded by local surfers André Rodrigues and Hélder Vieira who wanted to offer to other surfers, the local waves, nature, gastronomy and island culture. This renovated Surf Camp & School has a terrace with 360º views of the sea and the mountains surrounding the village.
Just like any other hostel, it has shared and double private rooms. All guests and surfers have unrestricted access to all areas of the house, from the terrace, to the equipped kitchen, living room with free WiFi and other amenities.

Just like any other hostel, it has shared and double private rooms. All guests and surfers have unrestricted access to all areas of the house, from the terrace, to the equipped kitchen, living room with free WiFi and other amenities.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES
SURF COURSE DETAILS
Group size max 10; ratio participants: surf instructors is 1/5. course schedule according to tides and total duration is 2h - course location is where the waves are good we provide transportation to other spots - all levels- course language is in English.
Only course participation (without accommodation) is possible!
The Madeirasurfcamp&school is certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation and the instructors are professionally qualified. We have many years experience teaching all level´s, from beginers to experienced surfers. The lessons have the time of 2 hours, and each instructor have at maximum 4/5 students. The surf lessons have a theoretical part, warming up and practical in the water. During the lesson we can make some pictures with GoPro camera, and send to the students.
SURF MATERIALS
All lessons include: surfboard, wetsuit, accessories, insurance and technical advice from a certified instructor of the Portuguese Surfing Federation.Transportation (Funchal - Porto da Cruz - Funchal) for the surf lessons, requires a minimum number of students and transfer is charged.

Rentals: Deposit fee (150€ - 250€), the value will be in favor of the company in case of any damage of the board or in the other material.

SURF CONDITIONS
For beginner surfers, the most popular surf spots in Porto da Cruz are all black sand beachbreaks:
Alagoa - A small bay, just a two minute walk from the surf camp and surf school. Ideal for learning and surfing lessons, as it is protected from big waves.
Maiata - Is about ten minutes away from the surfcamp. It is the biggest sand beach and the most beautiful one in Madeira, it can handle waves up to 2 meters.

JOURNEY
Ways to get to the camp
First of all you have to catch a plane to Madeira, TAP, Easyjet and Transavia fly directly from Lisbon and Porto. Direct flights from other european capitals are operated by several airline companies. Once in the Madeira, leave the airport on the highway heading to SANTANA, just follow the signs to PORTO da CRUZ.
The Madeira Surf Camp is located right in the middle of the village of Porto da Cruz.
Upon reaching the exit to Porto da Cruz, go right (2nd exit) at the roundabout. Go straight to the center of the village of Porto da Cruz, on the regional road for about 3 minutes, arriving at the village get the 2nd exit where you will find the only GREEN HOUSE, can't miss it!
Important details
You can also get to Porto da Cruz using public transportation, the bus company is called SAM and leaves Avenida do Mar in Funchal or at the airport terminal. The numbers of the buses are 53, 78 and 208
