You could even show off your skills in front of an audience as they watch the sunset from Montañita beach or you can choose to surf at a quite spot and enjoy the waves with friends or for yourself.
Seasonal conditions
High Season is from January till March, where we have the north swell - bigger waves
And from April till December we get the south swell - smaller waves wich are good for beginners.
Both conditions whatsoever are good surfeable.
Water Tempreatures
Montanita sea water temperatures peak in the range 24 to 29°C (75 to 84°F) on around the 4th of March and are at their lowest on about the 4th of September, in the range 19 to 24°C (66 to 75°F). Year round warm sea water temperatures at Montanita climb to their warmest in early March. Even then a rash vest and board shorts should be fine for surfing at any time of year. Montanita sea water temperatures are lowest in early September.
Actual sea surface water temperatures close to shore at Montanita can vary by several degrees compared with these open water averages. This is especially true after heavy rain, close to river mouths or after long periods of strong offshore winds.
Ways to get to the camp
1. Arranged private transportation by us.
2. From Guayaquil, there you can get a (luxury) bus trip to reach Montanita in 2,5 hours. There are also local busses available.
3. From Quito, with another flight (40 min and about $70) or with a bus (12 hours)
4. From Manta, take a local bus to Montanita (3-4 hours)
1. Private transfer: 24 hours a day, we can offer a meet and greet, and transfer from airport direct to Montañita. Price is $90 from Guayaquil. If you would like this option, please email us with your flight details. We will make the initial booking for you. If you have any changes to your flight details or any other changes for your transport please contact Manuel directly,
2. From Guayaquil: There are twobus options from Guayaquil to Montañita:
Direct luxury bus: We highly recommend this. Guayaquil is the biggest city in Ecuador. Many planes and buses arrive here. Go to the bus ‘terminal’ (Pronounced as ter-me-NAL) close to the airport. There you will find buses direct to Montañita with the company "CLP" (Cooperativa de Transporte Libertad Peninsular)which have daily departures at (approximately!) 05:00, 06:00, 7:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 16:30. It takes about 2.5 hours. The price is about $5.50. At the terminal, CLP is located at office number 83 (easy to find – they are in numerical order). Here you buy a ticket for Montañita. CLP will tell you where the bus is departing – but normally it’s on the second floor.
OR local bus: You can catch a bus to Santa Elena (several bus companies go to here, so departures are about hourly.) The cost is about $3. Then once in Santa Elena, you transfer to the local buses to Montañita (about $1.50). It’s a very small bus station so this is very easy to do. The total time is normally about 4 hours depending on transfer time.
3. From Quito: There are direct buses to Guayaquil, Jipijapa, Portoviejo or Puerto Lopez. From each of these locations you need to change bus and get a different bus to Montañita. Puerto Lopez (only 1.5 hours from Montañita) is normally the easiest to do this catch the overnight bus. Total time will be about 12 hours depending on transfer times.
OR take a flight to Guayaquil (about $70 USD) then catch a bus from there (see above). The main domestic airlines are: Aerogal, Aerolitoral, Taca, Avianca.
4. From Manta: Go to the bus terminal. From there catch the bus to Montañita. Some will go direct (about 3 hours) and some will have a stop over (about 4 hours). Unfortunately, just because a bus that says "directo," does not mean that it will not make stops.
We offer a transfer service from the airport in Guayaquil for $100 (approx. 2 1/2 hours), or $190 for both ways.
We personally would recommend you to take a flight to Guayaquil. From there we offer you this transfer or there are also buses to Montañita.
