LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS
Get Lost in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica
Trip Advisor calls it one of the top 10 beach destinations in Central and South America and more than a few celebrities have chosen to make Santa Teresa, Costa Rica their home away from home.
“Lost in Santa…”, a local expression, deftly describes what happens to many when they discover this priceless gem on the Nicoya Peninsula. Once upon a time Santa Teresa was just a sleepy little beach town that surfers, artists and yogis from around the world stumbled upon. Often, those travelers fell in love with the area and stayed, thereby creating a wonderfully eclectic, International community.
Adjacent to Mal Pais or Bad Country, Santa Teresa has the distinct flavor of an ultra hip, cosmopolitan destination, yet paradoxically boasts pristine, untouched beaches and jungle, while the dirt road that runs through the area leaves no doubt that travelers are indeed in the wild un-tamed west.
With over 90 restaurants to choose from, including Nautilus Boutique Hotel’s own Olam, the area is a delight to those who consider themselves to be foodies. For the culinary artists among us, the fisherman’s village at the end of the road in Mal Pais is a great spot to pick up freshly caught yellow fin tuna, red snapper or grouper at the end of the day, while the organic farmers market, on the beach every Saturday, is a must for mingling, listening to live music and picking up fresh vegies, herbs and fruits for the week’s culinary masterpieces.
Never a dull moment, locals and visitors alike love the amazing surf, endless hiking, biking or riding trails, art galleries, nightly live music (just pick a place!), bonfires on the beach, awe inspiring sunsets, local movie nights and more. Yoga enthusiasts can always find a top-notch yoga class and spa junkies will find that booking a massage is only a challenge when it comes to deciding who is the best therapist in town. Catch a full moon party at the beach club on the sand or hang out on a Saturday afternoon for a local football (soccer!) game. Whatever your pleasure is, you’ll probably find it in Santa Teresa.
CAMP CHARACTER
Eco Friendly & Sustainable Practices
In the interest of supporting a sustainable world, Nautilus Boutique Hotel & Olam Restaurant were built with a keen eye on protecting our natural resources and conserving energy and water. Recycling and composting are just a few ways we give back to Mother Earth and our rain water collection system works hand in hand with our water treatment plant, thus saving precious resources and preventing the pollution of our ground water. Organic, biodegradable cleaning products and energy saving lighting are also incorporated into our daily efforts to cherish our resources. Nautilus Boutique Hotel is a pioneer in sustainable stays here in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. We were the first hotel in the area to install a water treatment plant. Hidden away outside of our hotel gate is a grey water recycling system. We believe in enjoying and being surrounded by nature in this idyllic paradise but also ensuring continued nurturing of our delicate Eco-system. None of our waste water pipes to the ocean. Instead, we filter, recycle and reuse our precious resources, protecting and respecting the natural beauty around us.
We’ve planted fruit trees throughout our property. They add enhanced beauty, shade and flora to our landscape. When in season we harvest our own organic fruit and use them in our restaurant Olam. Our guests can taste the difference! Grown from love, picked when ripe and featured in our cuisine, we are proud to offer the freshest organic ingredients grown right on sight!
In addition we introduce sustainable living at Nautilus Boutique Hotel in the following ways:
Light construction.
LED energy saving lights.
All cleaning, kitchen and bathroom products are biodegradable.
Use of organic produce in Olam Restaurant.
Organic minibar in every villa.

Here you’ll find an abundance of beautiful little rocky beaches to explore. Hiking and jumping off the waterfalls is a Costa Rican right of passage around here and definitely a memory to share back home.
In the right season you can also watch baby sea turtles make their way to the surf. An incredible site. In the month of December this happens every day on the main beach at 4pm when local sea turtle conservatories release hatchlings.

Rest assured our tours adhere to the strictest safety measures. Guests can relax and enjoy exciting views of the Pacific Ocean and the jungle from a whole new perspective up in the trees.
After the canopy tour, you are welcome to hike the grounds and discover the many wonders of this landscape up close.
Kayak Tours
Paddle out into calm bays with your own kayak and explore the lush pacific coast line. Try spicing it up a bit with kayak surfing in the crashing waves on any of the awesome surf spots nearby. Beautiful reefs with abundant marine life and deep, verdant mangroves add to the never ending wonders that you’ll discover while on your kayak adventure.
Isla Tortuga
Consisting of two large uninhabited islands off the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, near Paquera, the pristine white sand beaches and lush vegetation of Isla Tortuga invite guests to explore, relax, swim and snorkel. During the boat ride over from Montezuma you will have the opportunity to spot dolphins, turtles and, perhaps, even a majestic whale shark if it’s the right season. You’ll also pass the Negritos and Guayabo Sanctuaries, where you’ll spot an abundance of sea birds and their nests. Often times these tours include lunch and drinks and always, all the snorkeling gear you’ll need.
Fishing
A unique sport fishing experience awaits you in Mal Pais where your fishing guides are all local fishermen who have grown up in the area, fishing the waters for years. Offshore, close to shore or surf fishing are all offered. Should you decide to charter a boat it will be a 24 or 28 foot panga.
No fancy machines or fishing finders are needed. These local guides know the waters so well. Your experience will be an authentic, organic one that you will never forget. At the end of the day, your guide will clean the fish and your catch of marlin, sailfish, rooster fish, yellow finned tuna, red snapper or… (who knows with such abundance?) will make for a terrific dinner that evening back at the hotel.
Not into cooking? No problem- many restaurants in the area will do it up for you or you can ask the concierge to help you hire a chef to come to your place and prepare the evening’s meal.
