Founded in 2015, Santa Bárbara’s Surf School was born from a surfer´s dream to enable anyone to experience the uniqueness of surfing in the Azores. To feel the breeze on your face as you glide the waves. The perfect harmony between men and nature. At Santa Bárbara’s School we offer surf, bodyboard and sup lessons, surf guide services and rental of all the necessary equipment for surfing, bodyboarding and diving. We also have partnerships with local accommodations.

ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Based in island of São Miguel, in the archipelago of the Azores, Santa Bárbara’s Surf School is located on the middle of the island, in Rabo de Peixe village and is opened every day. The travel time to the northern and southern beaches is 7-10 minutes by car.

CAMP OPERATOR

Sérgio Marcos Aparício: Hello! My name is Sérgio Marcos Aparício, I am the founder and technical director of Santa Bárbara Surf School Azores. I am certified as a surf instructor by the Portuguese Surfing Federation since 1998. I’m from Peniche, where I started surfing 25 years ago. In Peniche I founded "Bay School", where I worked several years as a surf instructor. Later, I took a degree in sports in Leiria’s University. In 2001 I moved to the Azores, working as a teacher of Physical Education in different schools of the archipelago. I have been working in the formation of young athletes in various clubs on the island of S. Miguel in all levels, from begginers to competitors, defending titles at regional, national and world level.

Ilona Ganzenko: Hello! I am Ilona, I work at "Santa Barbara Surf School Azores" as a manager. My job is to organize the groups in levels of education, distribution of the material for the classes, to answer to the needs of the surfers, photo / video ...
I am from St. Petersburg, but I have always had a passion for the sea and the Azores are undoubtedly an ideal place for nature lovers.
I love to walk on the beach and breathe the sea air, feel the warm water in the summer and, of course, surf with my funboard.

SURF COURSE DETAILS

The location of the lesson is decided the day before, to ensure the best conditions.
We pick-up and drop-off in Ponta Delgada and Ribeira Grande, depending on our availability (20€).

MOSTEIROS BEACH AND FISHING PORT
Mosteiros Beach is located on the west coast, that works as a point break with ripples from the northeast quadrant to the south quadrant. In the fishing harbour they break long rights and, sometimes, with south waving, the lefts begin to function. The waves of Mosteiros are waves that break into slabs of rock, requiring a lot of experience. The crowd in Mosteiros is quite affable.

SURF MATERIALS

The surf guide includes a wetsuit, a leash and the right board to each student level. The water temperature ranges from 15º to 17º in winter and 20º to 24º in summer.
All you need to bring is a towel, some shorts or bikini and sunscreen.

Some of the island's best waves can only be truly enjoyed with local knowledge. This service allow visitors with more or less surf experience to explore these fantastic waves. We check in advance the waves websites and always know where the best spots are.
