Soul Surf School is the number 1 provider of surf camps and surf courses on the East Coast of Australia. We offer Surf and Stay packages in the heart of the hippy surf town Byron Bay. Byron Bay is regarded as one of the premier surf destinations in Australia and is suited for surfers of all abilities.
Stay with us at our beachfront surf hostel and immerse yourself in a surf experience with our elite surf guides who each boost over 10 years of personal surf coaching experience. Byron Bay and the surrounding area is a mecca for surfing for all abilities from entry level beginners to budding professionals we have you covered. Each day our elite team of Instructors will pick you up from our hostel and take you on a surf safari to the beach that offers the best surfing conditions. We have developed our business so we are fortunate to have a licence to teach at up to 15 different beaches. This allows us to find secluded perfect beaches that offer great waves whatever the swell size, wind direction or tides.
After the surf take the opportunity to relax on the stunning beaches of Byron Bay or take in a beautiful lighthouse walk to witness migrating whales and dolphins at the most Easterly point of Australia. Byron Bay has a great hippy surf vibe so soak it up on a daily basis as you relax and unwind in paradise. As part of your trip you will also get a daily free rental from our beach side surf shop so you can further practice your surfing skills in between structured lesson time or go for a cruise around town on one of our retro cruiser bikes.
All of our Surf camps are bespoke trips tailored to suit the individual requirements of each surfer and we can organize additional activities such as kayaking with whales and dolphins or skydiving to add further adventure and excitement to your surf camp experience with us.

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS
We are a mobile surf camp, this allows us to find great learn to surf waves all within a 20K radius of our surf hostel. We are lucky to be surfing at some of the most pristine beaches on the East Coast of Australia. All of our beaches are safe sand bottom surf breaks, which create spilling safe waves. We will be surfing at world renowned spots that are National surfing reserves and protected due to their beauty and wave quality. All beaches back onto stunning vista of national parks offering breathtaking views from both the water and land.
CAMP CHARACTER
We are a professional surf camp and our number one priority is to offer fun, professional surf experiences to everyone that books a camp with us. Being based in Byron Bay we are close to all of the nightlife that our bustling town offers. Essentially if you want to party you can or if you want a more chilled out trip there is a option to relax go to bed early so you can be fresh each day for your surf sessions. The target market is 18-35 years however we do cater for ages out of this demographic. We do not accept dogs or cater for children under the age of 6
CAMP OPERATOR
Sean Riley is the owner of the camp and has been operating Soul Surf School for over 8 years. The company was born from his passion for teaching surfing and he has created a fantastic surf experience based around a strong team of coaches. Sean believes to offer a first class experience each coach must have a solid background of individual surfing and years of personal coaching. This ensures each person receives a technical session and the progression is very fast from one lesson to the next.
ACCOMMODATION TYPES
We boost a spectacular Hostel situated in the heart of Byron Bay, key features include rooftop bar/café and sun terrace with splash pool, communal TV room and Internet facilities, laundry room, massive communal kitchen and multiple communal balcony’s offering unique views of Byron Bay. Our hostel couldn’t be better situated as it offers 2-minute walk from all of the amenities that Byron Bay boosts. Our hostel is the closet to the beach in the town as well so this is the place to stay to make the most of the stunning surfing beaches that Byron Bay has to offer
We have rooms to suit all requirements and price range from larger budget dorm rooms at the lower price point. We can also cater for couples and singles who wish a more private experience as we also have private rooms with or without ensuites.
CATERING
We are a self catering surf camp however we have facilities at our hostel to ensure that each of our guests can manage their budget to ensure costing’s can be kept down. We are a short two-minute walk from major supermarket Aldi and Woothworths. The onsite facilities make cooking very easy, as we have an industrial styled kitchen equipped to deal with each guest’s requirements. We have got catering onsite at our roof top bar where we sell pre made sandwiches, wraps, freshly made juices and fresh coffee through the day. This is regarded as one of the best hangouts in Byron Bay and is only available for hostel guests. What better way to chill out after the session then with a snack by the plash pool enjoying the Australian sun.
SURF COURSE DETAILS
Soul Surf School is widely regarded as one of the premier surf schools in Australia with one of the main reasons being our industry-leading student to instructor ratio. The governing body Surfing Austrlia states that one instructor can take a maximum of eight students something that a lot of companies follow. We feel that this number isn’t contusive to offer technical surf lessons so we run sessions that have a more private feel to them (1:6 max) this enables each student who has individual requirements to progress very quickly.
We run two sessions per day
Summer time
9am-1pm and 2pm – 6pm
Winter time
8.30am-12.30pm and 1pm-5pm
Each session is a four-hour experience from pick up to drop off and includes all equipment hire top of the range learner surfboard, wetsuit (season dependent) and rash vest.
The lessons are taught by English speaking instructors so we cannot guarantee a German instructor to run the course. This may change as we progress. For example if we start to run lots of camps with German clientele we could look to implement this.
SURF MATERIALS
Primarily we use safe foam boards for all of our lessons as these are suited for the vast majority of people who book a camp with us. We have a range of sizes to suit each individuals weight, height and ability. We do have a range of fiberglass boards as well that we can use for surfers who are already capable of surfing beyond the whitewater.
Ultimately our aim is to offer each individual the perfect surfboard to ensure maximum progression on the surf experience.
Each surfer will be required to bring swimwear, a towel, water and sunscreen. We provide everything else. Out side the structured surf lesson each guest can utilize our offer to practice their skills by taking out a free board rental for two hours each day. This is redeemed from our beach side surf shop (30 second walk from the hostel)
OTHER ACTIVITIES
We have a licence to teach surfing at up to 15 beaches within a 20k radius of our surf camp. This ensures each guest gets the best conditions on a daily basis and gets to explore some stunning locations
Seasonal conditions
Byron Bay is a great year round destination for surfing. As we have multiple licences to teach at a variety of safe beaches we can always find great conditions.
November – May – Summer season we have very warm water and land temperatures that only requires board shorts or Bikinis to surf in (we provide a rashvest to protect against the Australian sun) We will occasionally wear wetsuits due to cooler days during these months.
June-October
We get more offshore winds, with cooler days (still like a nice European summers day) and we wear a thin summer wetsuit as the water is slightly cooler
Both seasons are blessed with good waves for all abilities.
Crowd factor and local people
We are a very professional surf school that is respected for being so in the local community so we are welcomed at all of the locations we surf at. That being said we always aim to seek uncrowded waves as this is the Holy Grail in surfing and we are know lots of spots that are off the beaten track. This gives the guests a real sense of surf exploration

Characterization of surroundings/region
The Wave rich Northern NSW region is a wave rich stretch of coastline that is a paradise for ocean goers. The safari to the beach is all part of the experience as we drive through sugar cane fields, past stunning t-tree lakes to find our surf destinations

Byron Bay is a small surf town yet due to its beauty, I regard it as the premier town in all of Australia it has all of the amenities to make your trip more then comfortable.
If you wish to party Byron has stunning nightlife with a thriving live music scene, or if you wish to relax why not take in one of the many beach side coffee shops (The coffee culture to some is a attraction alone to come to Byron) or dine out at the countless restaurants which cater for all tastes and budgets
