Features
Right outside the door of SURFinn lies Buarcos, one of the longest waves in Europe. When it’s breaking, it’s a stunning sight and even more incredible to surf. Figueira da Foz is home to several other beaches, including the popular Cabedelo, where many surf lessons take place. A bit further north, you'll find plenty of beautiful, uncrowded peaks. With smaller and bigger swells you’ll always be able to find a fun wave.
During high season (July and August), the focus is mainly on families. In the low season, it caters to solo travelers, couples, and groups of friends. The average age is between 25 and 30. It's a laid-back surf house with the option to dine or enjoy the nightlife in the city center. The maximum capacity is 20 guests, and the spoken languages are English, French, German and Dutch.
SURFinn Figueira Da Foz is part of a family of 4 amazing SURFinns. The other 2 in Portugal can be found along the coast in the towns Caparica and Monte Clerigo (Algarve). The Fourth SURFinn is located in the French town called Vieux Boucau.
In SURFinn Figueira Da Foz a small team of surf enthusiasts are running the house where cleanliness, good food and happy vibes are the main topics on their agenda.
2- or 3-person bedrooms with shared bathroom, 4-person bedroom with private bathroom, or dorm for solo travelers with shared bathroom.
A nutritious breakfast buffet is included, and three times a week, you have the option to join for dinner. These evenings are some of the best, with everyone unwinding in the shared garden, enjoying a glass of wine or a cold beer.
All lessons are led by certified instructors, and we use only top-quality surf equipment. Beyond the basics, you'll learn about safety, the beach environment, currents, waves, and the gear you'll be using. You can also choose to make use of our surf transfer. The coaches will pick up at the house and bring you to the surfspot, super easy!
Surf gear will be provided during lessons, and if you want to surf outside of your lessons, you’re able to rent equipment. In mid and low season renting is possible by the day. And during high season the equipment rentals are by the week.
Want some action? Visit the beautiful Serra da Boa Viagem park with a rented mountain bike. This hilly and heavily wooded area is perfect for mountain biking at all levels.
Prefer to stay on the road? You can also rent a road bike to easily explore the small villages located further inland.
Buarcos
From the entire house, you can see Europe’s longest right-hand point break. Buarcos is a stunning wave that can break for hundreds of meters when conditions align and various reefs connect. The spot requires a medium to large northwest swell and is a key reason why dedicated surfers travel from around the world to Portugal. It’s not ideal for beginners but is fantastic for intermediates and pros (and offers a breathtaking view!).
Cabedelo
Just a ten-minute drive from SURFinn and directly south of the river mouth, you'll find the beautiful and expansive Cabedelo beach. This is where surf lessons take place and it's a perfect beach for all skill levels.
Along the pier in Cabedelo, you’ll find fast and hollow waves suited for advanced surfers. On the main beach, there are gentle waves ideal for beginners to catch their first rides. This is also the location of the annual Gliding Barnacles event, a vibrant mix of surf, art, music, delicious food, and fine wines.
Praia da Figueira
Figueira’s ‘main beach’ is the widest in Portugal, with plenty of sandy area even at high tide. This makes it wonderfully tranquil, even during peak season. The surf here is often calmer, making it an excellent spot for beginner surf lessons.
Seasonal conditions
Spring and fall bring larger swells ideal for experienced surfers, but beginners can still find suitable options for their first surf lesson. In summer, the situation reverses: smaller swells create perfect conditions for beginners and intermediates, while the right tides and swells can offer experienced surfers some of the best waves Europe has to offer.
Crowd factor and local people
Compared to other European spots, it can’t be called crowded. In off-season you can surf by yourself at times. In Summer more surfers and novices will be around. This could be called a crowd, but again, Figueira is still very calm compared to the breaks near the big cities of Lisbon, Porto and the Algarves.
Characterization of surroundings/region
Figueira da Foz is a hidden gem on the Atlantic Ocean. The town is charming and authentic, with all the amenities you need, including a beautiful promenade, many shops, and plenty of dining options. You'll never be bored during your stay. Just north of SURFinn, you'll find a stunning nature park perfect for enjoyable bike rides. City trips to Coimbra, Aveiro, and Porto are also great options!
Activities and facilities
In addition to surfing, relaxing by the pool, and enjoying games and sports activities, it’s important to savor the food and drinks Portugal has to offer.
Portuguese cuisine is packed with delightful flavors that will truly complete your surf vacation. Cozy restaurants and bars are plentiful in the charming shopping streets and are a must-visit. The local fish is as fresh as it gets and is prepared in authentic Portuguese style—an absolute treat!
Another great spot to visit is the Santa Catarina Fortress. This historic defensive fort and lighthouse is already a stunning and historically rich site, but it’s been transformed into a beer bar, making it well worth a visit. Here, you'll find a variety of Belgian beers, among others.
Ways to get to the camp
Traveling to Portugal for a surf holiday is easiest by plane. You can choose to fly into Porto or Lisbon, both of which are about 1.5 hours from Figueira da Foz.
Rental Car tip: The expansive beaches and beautiful coves in and around Figueira are best explored with a rental car. Generally, it’s the fastest and often most affordable way to get to and from the bed and breakfast. Additionally, it provides you with great freedom to make the most of your surf vacation in Figueira da Foz. This way, you can independently explore all the surf spots and take in all the region's attractions.
