Summary

Matos Tarifa: Progression & Immersion Camp (Independent Riders Only)

You ride upwind and manage transitions, but you’ve hit a plateau?

The Matos Tarifa "Progression" camp is designed for independent riders with their own gear who want to level up in the European wind capital.

No standard group lessons here. The goal is to optimize every session through technical field coaching.

The Concept: Intensive Coaching and Spot Analysis

Tarifa’s wind changes fast. Between Levante and Poniente, choosing the right spot is key. We take you where the conditions are best (Los Lances, Valdevaqueros, or local secret spots) and coach your session for 3 to 4 hours per day.

What makes the difference:

Real-time Radio Coaching: Immediate corrections while you ride. This is the most effective way to fix body positioning or jump timing.

Progression Analysis: We define your goals at the start of the week (first jumps, pop, toeside transitions, backrolls, or high-wind control).

Downwinders: Depending on weather, we organize downwind runs to work on positioning and carving over long distances.

ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Tarifa is the "European Capital of Wind" for a reason. Conditions here are never dull. For a rider in the progression phase, it is the most educational playground in the world, provided you know how to read the water.

The Two Faces of the Strait: Levante and Poniente

The success of your camp depends on our ability to navigate between the two dominant winds:

Poniente (West): Side-onshore wind, cooler and more consistent. It often brings tight chop or small waves late in the day. This is the ideal wind for practicing your stance, pop, and transitions in active water.

Levante (East): Offshore wind, powerful and warm. It provides perfectly flat water near the shore, ideal for speed and technical freestyle. This is where radio coaching and Matos Tarifa's safety protocols are essential, as the wind is offshore.

The Spots: Our Training Grounds Depending on wind strength and your level, we mainly ride at two major spots:

Los Lances: A vast sandy beach with no obstacles. Our preferred area for long reaches and downwinders.

Valdevaqueros: A bay sheltered by a giant dune creating a Venturi effect. Ideal when the wind is lighter elsewhere.

CAMP CHARACTER

We prioritize quality over quantity, with groups limited to a maximum of 8 kitesurfers.

This human-scale format ensures a friendly atmosphere and personalized technical coaching.

Profile: Open to all ages and backgrounds.

Required level: You must be autonomous and independent (able to ride upwind), equivalent to IKO Level 3J.

Equipment: Participants bring their own gear.

Languages: Coaching available in French, English, or Spanish according to your preference.

CAMP OPERATOR

Driven by a passion for the wind and based in Tarifa for years, Mathieu founded Matos Tarifa with a clear vision: delivering uncompromising technical expertise. With certified coaching experience (IKO & FAV), he does more than just teach; he guides riders through their transition toward full autonomy and mastering the technical conditions unique to the Strait of Gibraltar. His approach is direct, focused on safety and results, always prioritizing real progression over just cruising.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

The goal is clear: tailor-made progression, adapted to your pace and initial technical level. Whether you are looking to improve your riding fluidity, perfect your transitions, or send your first technical tricks (Jumps, Big Air), the coaching is calibrated to your needs.

Intensity: Depending on your physical fitness, we offer up to 4 hours of coaching per day. You have the freedom to alternate between supervised sessions and free riding on the spot.

Approach: Personalized follow-up to correct the details that make the difference and unlock your technical plateaus.

Safety (Levante Wind): When the wind blows from the East (Side-Offshore), riding requires extra vigilance. In these conditions, purchasing a rescue/safety card from local companies (New Angel or Sea Rescue) is mandatory to ensure your recovery at sea if needed.

SURF MATERIALS

To ensure the best possible progression, we recommend riding with your own gear. This avoids the need to adapt to new equipment and allows you to focus immediately on your technique using your familiar setup.

Advice: Bring a quiver that covers a wide wind range. We suggest taking kite sizes from 6m to 12m.

Rental: In case of exceptional conditions (extremely strong or light wind) or if you are missing a specific size, equipment rental is available.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

If the wind happens to drop, Tarifa offers an exceptional playground for other activities. Depending on the group's interests and energy, we can combine various options:

Hiking and Trekking: Exploring natural park trails with views across to Africa.

Rock Climbing: Sessions on local cliffs (San Bartolo).

Marine Observation: Boat trips to see dolphins and whales in the Strait of Gibraltar.

And more: Yoga, Surfing, or exploring the historic old town.

SURF CONDITIONS
Breaks directly at the main spot and at nearby spots

Most spots in and around Tarifa are set on vast stretches of fine sandy beaches, providing wide-open and safe riding areas. The lack of major obstacles on the beach makes it easy to set up your gear and launch into the water.

Seasonal conditions

In Tarifa, you can ride year-round, but conditions change with the seasons:

Spring (March - June): Ideal season for wind variety.

Air: 18°C - 24°C | Sea: 16°C - 18°C.

Summer (July - September): Consistent thermals and powerful Levante. Boardshorts or shorty wetsuits.

Air: 25°C - 30°C | Sea: 20°C - 22°C.

Autumn (October - December): Good Poniente swells with small waves.

Air: 18°C - 22°C | Sea: 18°C - 19°C.

Winter (January - February): Wilder conditions, often heavy sessions. 4/3mm wetsuit recommended.

Air: 14°C - 17°C | Sea: 15°C - 16°C.

The wind regime in Tarifa is binary. Everything depends on which way the air flows through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Poniente (West Wind / Side-Onshore)

Source: Coming from the Atlantic, this wind is cooler and more humid.

Water State: It brings chop and can create nice waves by the end of the day depending on the swell.

Riding: It is very consistent and safe as it naturally pushes you back toward the beach. Perfect for using chop as a kicker for jumps and for wave riding.

Temperature: A slightly thicker wetsuit is recommended as it cools the air.

Levante (East Wind / Side-Offshore)

Source: Coming from the Mediterranean, this wind is warm, powerful, and often very strong (frequently over 25-30 knots).

Water State: Because it blows from the land, the water is perfectly flat near the shore.

Riding: This is paradise for speed and technical freestyle. Visibility is crystal clear and the water turns turquoise.

Safety: Since it blows offshore, riding is supervised and requires a rescue card (safety boats) to ride with peace of mind.

Crowd factor and local people

Thanks to its vast, expansive beaches, Tarifa offers excellent riding conditions year-round. the sheer size of the spots allows for comfortable sessions, even when the wind draws in many riders. However, it is worth noting that July and August are the peak months with the highest attendance, as the town and spots buzz with the energy of the high summer season. Outside of these two months, you will enjoy a wilder atmosphere and much more space on the water.
