ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

The Hideout

Our Costa Rica Retreat will be held at a gorgeous hideout in the rolling hills of Punta Banco. Only a short walk from the beach, surrounded by jungle, and often visited by a diversity of (mostly) friendly animals. The accommodation offers all amenities you can think of. Bright, comfortable bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning, a big outdoor and indoor living area, and an infinity pool overlooking the Golfo Dulce. It’s the perfect place to reload that battery of yours enjoying priceless views, jungle sounds, and lots of chill sessions with new friends by the pool. During our Costa Rica retreat, we offer two and three-person rooms, which can be shared either with your own surf buddy or with one of the other retreat attendees. Every room comes with its own bathroom, air conditioning, linens, towels, and stunning ocean or jungle views.

The Food

In case you’re worried about the food. Please don’t. We are absolute food addicts! Our holiday wouldn’t even be close to perfect if the food isn’t delicious. So taking you with us on our Costa Rica retreat, practically means you’ll be well taken care of in the food department. Pinky promise. What it will taste like? Well… After your morning surf or yoga session, you can dive into an abundant breakfast of freshly squeezed juices, fruits from the garden, homemade bread, yogurt and granola, a side of eggs, or some traditional pinto. 

Lunch will be a delicious vegetarian dish. How about some quesadillas, grilled veggie wraps, or couscous salad? We’ll make sure those hungry surf bellies will be satisfied. After a beautiful sunset and a long day of awesome experiences, there’s nothing better than to join our dinner table. A daily changing menu of both local and western dishes, always with plenty of veggies and salad, will be the perfect end to another perfect day.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

The Surf

We will be based in Punta Banco, a tiny town close to the world-class surf break of Pavones. Punta Banco is blessed with many awesome waves for different levels of surfing. We wouldn’t be on a surf trip though if we wouldn’t discover more than just this place. We’ll be taking you to different spots in the nearby area with our English-speaking surf guides. The Pavones area has many surf breaks suitable for beginners, intermediates, and advanced surfers. Whether you don’t have that much experience yet or would like to improve your intermediate skills, our surf guides are here to help you every day! Of course, we’ll be giving Pavones a go as well! So hopefully you can return with a big grin on your face telling everyone you surfed the best wave of your life. Oh, and we’re surfing tropical waters. So guess what, no wetsuit is needed!

We have a selection of surfboards: foam and fibreglass, which are free to use during the lessons. Bring a rashguard.

The Yoga

We dare to say that our Hide-Out offers the most beautiful yoga deck you’ve ever seen. Surrounded by jungle, with a view overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and the sounds of nature all around you. Our English-speaking yoga teacher will offer Hatha-inspired yoga classes with a focus on your surf activities. Did you know surfing and yoga are like two peas in a pod? The balance we practice during our yoga classes will help you on your board, while the stretching will relax those sore surfing muscles.

The Nature & Adventures

During your stay with us, we’d like you to experience this place as we would do it. So, it’s not only about surfing at our Costa Rica Retreat. There’s always more to discover. The following activities will be included in the package:

Horseback riding

It doesn’t matter if you have never ridden a horse in your life or grew up as a true ponygirl, this horseback trip will be a lifetime memory. We’ll take the horses out into the mountains, the beautiful indigenous reserve of Punta Banco borders the jungle, and the wild and untamed beach towards Panama. You’ll see nature at its best and discover places where hardly anyone sets foot.

Boat trip to Matapalo

We will be taking the boat out to the other side of the Golfo Dulce. The other side is also well known as the Osa Peninsula; one of the most bio-diverse places in the world. Depending on the waves we’ll be having a surf session here, enjoy our breakfast on a deserted beach, and we’ll be chasing waterfalls to cool down a bit. During this trip, you might be able to spot different kinds of monkeys, toucans, parrots, turtles, dolphins, and maybe even some humpback whales.

Massage

We bet your shoulders will be sore after a surf session or two. What sounds better than a deep tissue massage with essential oils? Right. Nothing. So we got you covered here.

Turtle Walk

The local community of Punta Banco is closely involved in protecting the turtles that come to shore to lay their eggs every year. The first turtles will come to shore around July to drop hundreds of eggs in the black sands of Playa Punta Banco. Unfortunately eating turtle eggs has been a delicacy for decades in Costa Rica, which means that poachers are attracted by this phenomenon as well. The people of Punta Banco walk up and down the beach every single night to protect those turtles from poachers. We’ll be able to join them in small groups on one of these walks from July to October. You might be able to see one of the four different types of turtles that visit this beach, or if you’re really lucky see the baby turtles be released into the ocean from September till January. Keep in mind that these are wild animals. Even though it might be turtle season, there’s never a guarantee of seeing them. Also, always respect nature and keep your distance.

Ways to get to the camp

Arrival by airplane

The best way to get here is to fly into San Jose airport (SJO), and then take the SANSA airplane or the TRACOPA bus to Golfito. After the booking, Mokum Surf Club can assist you with your travel plan.

Transport to and from the local airport of Golfito on start/finish days of the retreat is included.

Arrival by taxi

Transport by taxi from San Jose (SJO), can be arranged for additional costs. Depending on a minimum request of 4 people.
