Summary

Welcome to KURA KURA SURF CAMP - Surf and explore Kuta Lombok

Hi there! We are a rather small and affordable surf camp where everybody gets their own private bungalow. Usually, we accommodate around 8 - 10 guests and occasionally  up to 12 guests. We spend a lot of time in the water, mostly having fun and surfing while being focused on a progressive learning curve. Besides surfing, there are plenty of other activities to do. Tag along, go explore or just relax in your private bungalow close to the pool. You can find us right next to Bali. Lombok is a comfortable spot for surfers and travellers who're looking for more of the real, rustic Indonesia. At Kura Kura, it does make us smile if you are happy. For all that means, you are having a good surf trip.

ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

With consistent breaks all around South Lombok, it is the perfect place to practice your surfing with mellow waves, while still offers hollow, fast and challenging waves for the experienced surfers. To the best of our abilities and luck, we try to take you to less crowded spots and waves that are the most suitable for your level.

CAMP OPERATOR

Hi, welcome to Kura Kura Surf Camp. Here is a little bit about us, for those who like to read. I am Tim, the Belgian founder of Kura Kura. "Kura Kura" which means tortoise in Indonesian language, refers to these peaceful majestic creatures and our respect for their slow pace in life. I started surfing when I was 25 years old, moving all around Europe in a little camper van. Soon I wanted nothing more than to keep surfing and traveling. So I quit my job and started working summertime on the surf camps in Europe, while wintertime I would escape Europe and spend my time looking for the best waves in Indonesia. I lost my heart here in Indonesia and every time I went back to Europe it felt like I walked away from home. At the end of 2015, I decided to move here and start doing what I love to do. Lombok, often referred to as Bali like it used to be. A beautiful island in Indonesia rich in culture and good waves. I was lucky to meet some amazing people who are helping me to make Kura Kura Surf Camp a place you'll never forget.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

At Kura Kura, we don't have a planning for each week. We like to go day by day, every evening we check the swell and conditions, then let you know what time to surf the next day. Typically, you'll wake up, breakfast, surf, have lunch and then surf again. We try to surf twice a day, although this really depends on the conditions. Usually you leave the camp in the morning, surf twice and come back in the afternoon. Surfing always gets priority. In between or after surf trips, we slot in some small excursions like sunset viewing, feed the monkeys, visit a shaping bay, or yoga etc. Usually the day with the worst conditions or when guests needs a break, we take a trip to the waterfalls. Saturdays are no-surf days to allow new arrivals.

SURF MATERIALS

When you sign up for the camp, surfboards are provided. For beginners you'll start with a soft top, then as you advance, we may switch to a more challenging board for you.
For intermediate surfers, we have a small surfboard collection, if there's none of your liking or that suits you, we'll rent one from in town. Of course, board rentals are on us.
You are welcome to bring your own board, however there will be no discount on the packages.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Explore:
Rent a bike and go explore. Drive along rice paddies and bump into water buffaloes. Don't miss the chance to enjoy all the panoramic views and scenic beaches. (Scooter rentals available at our homestay for 60,000IDR / day)

Local Market:
For those who want to buy local produce: Fresh fruits, spices, tobacco... There is a local market twice a week in Kuta. Wednesday and Saturday morning. Learn a few Indo sentences, be strong in your haggling game to get the best deals.

Fish BBQ:
After a long day of surf, chill out with a Bintang. Watch the sunsets, then have the freshest fish BBQ. Ask our crew to set it up, no better way to end the day.

Monkeys:
Just outside of Kuta lives a big family of beautiful, long tailed macaque monkeys by the beach. Share some peanuts with them and they'll go bananas!

Bat Cave:
Get ready to go underground. A really big cave with thousands of bats. If you're lucky, close encounters with python snakes. This hidden gem will give you an unforgettable experience.

Water Buffaloes:
Get close with the gentle creatures. Don't be surprised if these peaceful animals block your road.

Waterfalls:
At the bottom of the majestic Mount Rinjani lays Benang Stokel. Two hours drive from Kuta, you'll hike through the jungle to discover five waterfalls around the area.

Festival Bau Nyale:
Around February or March, this  festival unique to Sasak people happens all over Lombok. Exciting events like Stick Fighting is a must-see.

Yoga:
Mana Lombok is just a 5 minutes walk from us. Practice yoga, get a massage or even enjoy healthy food and smoothies here. You get one free yoga class with the package.

Visit a Shaping Bay:
If we end up in Gerupuk, we might visit a shaping bay. Banyu is the first ever shaper in Lombok and makes beautiful strong boards.

Sasak Wedding:
You haven't experienced Lombok until you've encountered a parade like this. The traditional ceremony of a Sasak Wedding. Expect music with big speakers combined with traditional instruments, and maybe stuck in traffic behind the parade.

Sunset:
We will take you to the best spot to watch the sun set into the ocean or behind the mountains, depending on the time of the year. Lombok's raw and stunning backdrop is just unforgettable.

Sasak Village:
Sasak people are the natives from Lombok. Take a trip to Sade village to learn about their culture. You can even try out batik weaving or buy local crafts like sarongs, clay potteries and handmade rings.

MORE INFO, HOW TO GET THERE & FAQ

SURF CONDITIONS
Breaks directly at the main spot and at nearby spots

Selong Belanak:
- 30 minutes west from Kuta
- Beach break
- Best on higher tides
- Good all year round
- Beautiful beach with white soft sands and local food huts. The perfect spot for beginners to take their first steps. Often closeout, except on a higher tide you’ll get an occasional runner.

Mawi:
- 25 minutes west from Kuta
- Reef break
- Rising & dropping tide
- Dry season
- Swell magnet which works best from a 3ft ground swell. Provides hollow lefts and rights although on big swell’s the left is more consistent. Very shallow on lower tide. Last bit of road can be tricky.

Are Guling:
- 15 minutes west from Kuta
- Reef break
- All tides
- Wet season
- You will see the waves braking while driving through the hill’s. A very popular classic right hander which can provide nice barrels on lower tides. Expect some crowds when it’s on. There’s a left a bit further but this is very unpredictable and subject to heavy currents.

Seger:
- 15 minutes east from Kuta
- Reef break
- Best on rising or higher tides
- Wet season
- Very consistent spot if the wind isn’t on it. It’s right in the open and doesn’t need a lot of swell to work. The main peak has a left and a right of which the right hander is the best with some cover up options. Often some local rippers because of the easy access.

Tanjung Aan:
- 20 minutes east from Kuta
- Reef break
- Rising or dropping tide
- All year round
- Very gorgeous bay with white sand beaches. On the right swell there is a good right hander in the middle of the bay, sometimes the left wall’s up to. Long paddle out or take a boat. Not great on a lower tide, it tends to get very shallow.

Gerupuk Inside:
- 25 minutes east from Kuta
- Reef break
- All tides
- All year round
- Drive into Gerupuk fishing village and take a boat out. This is one of Lombok’s most popular waves for beginners and intermediate surfers because of it’s mellow take off and long rides. This forgiving right hander is often a crowd pleaser. Sometimes a mellow left occurs.

Gerupuk Outside Right:
- 25 minutes east of Kuta
- Reef break
- Mid to higher tides
- Wet season wave or days without wind
- Inside’s big brother. More challenging and faster waves. It has a few peaks which will divide the crowd a little. As you can tell by the name it’s another right hander.

Don Don:
- 25 minutes east of Kuta
- Reef break
- Best from mid tide
- Wet season or days with no wind
- A fun A-frame in the Gerupuk bay. Needs a lot of swell to start working. When this happens the Gerupuk crowds separate over the different waves. Don Don’s has a very mellow take off, which is followed by long wall’s. Very fun wave when it’s on.

Ekas Inside:
- 55 minutes east of Kuta
- Reef break
- Best on mid tides
- Dry season
- Drive 40 minutes east to Awang harbour and catch a boat from there. The inside needs some swell to work. Long left walls for all levels and on low tide a quality right hander for slightly more advanced surfers.

Ekas Outside:
- 55 minutes east of Kuta
- Reef break
- Mid to high tides
- Dry season
- Can hold a lot of swell and be a heavy left hander with lot’s of water moving around. Still a quality wave on it’s days. Same like it’s little brother, better in dry season when the trade winds are up. Mid to high tides.

Serangan:
- 40 minutes west from Kuta
- Reef break
- Used to be a secret spot so we leave it up to you to discover ;)
- Secret season
- Fast, long right-hander walls.

Seasonal conditions

Generally, Lombok has two seasons. Wet season runs from October-April and Dry season runs from May-September. Wet season would be typically low season, as it can rain sometimes but that doesn't stop us from enjoying the surf. During this season, theoretically the wind should drop as it rains, leaving glassy waves (fingers crossed). Then again Lombok is generally dryer than Bali. Our personal favorite is the wet season as the wind is not that strong, this way more surf spots open up. Dry season is peak season in Lombok and Bali. You know, holiday times for most of us humans. Expect more people around town and in the lineup. During dry season, the Easterly trade wind starts working and they won't stop until the rain comes back. Good thing is that this season the waves tend to be more consistent. One thing we can say is that there are waves all year around, it's just a matter of different spots and looking for them.

SURROUNDINGS / REGION

Characterization of surroundings/region

We are 2 minutes scooter ride to town, 15-20 minutes if you walk. Most people rent a scooter/motorbike here because it's just so convenient. Food, bar, beach, exploring. If you've never ridden a scooter before, maybe this is your chance to give it a go!

JOURNEY

Ways to get to the camp

Flights:
With daily direct flights to Lombok Praya Airport, this is the easiest, fastest and affordable way to get to the island:
Bali - Lombok: 30 minutes
Surabaya - Lombok: 1 hour
Jakarta - Lombok: 2 hours
Kuala Lumpur - Lombok: 3 hours
Singapore - Lombok: 3 hours
Kuta is only 20 minutes away from the airport, so it is an easy drive. We recommend Garuda Airlines as they have the least tendencies to delay. At Kura Kura Surf Camp, we provide free airport pickup for all of our guests.

Fast Boat from Bali:
You can easily arrange transportation from anywhere in Bali to Kuta Lombok. Fast boats from Padangbai Harbour (Bali) to Bangsal Harbour (Lombok) claim the journey to be 2 hours. Once in Lombok, another 2 hours drive from Senggigi to Kuta. This is the fastest way by boat, but it can be quite pricey. You can book your ticket online. We do not provide free pickup from Bangsal Harbour. Beware of drivers trying to overcharge you. You can get a driver with Gojek or Grabcar but they are not allowed on the parking lot. If you want us to arrange a pickup, kindly send us an email with all your arrival details. You can also directly contact Bruno at Together Tour and Travel on Facebook or call +6282339211572 to arrange your transport.

Public Ferry from Bali:
The cheaper option is to take the public ferry from Padangbai Harbour to Lembar Harbour. The ferry leaves every hour, you can get a ticket once at the harbour. The journey normally takes around 5 hours. When there are not many people, you'll find more comfort on these old ferries than fast boats. Upon arrival, grab a car and that's another hour to Kuta. We do not provide free pickup from Lembar Harbour. If you want us to arrange a pickup, kindly send us an email with all your arrival details. You can also directly contact Bruno at Together Tour and Travel on Facebook or call +6282339211572 to arrange your transport.
