2. General information about Ericeira
Ericeira, which once lived only from fishing, was not always as lively and busy as it is today. Twenty years ago, it was mainly Portuguese tourists who came here, and only in the high season from June to September. Today, it is hard to imagine that the place was almost deserted in the low season, because with an excellently developed (surfing) infrastructure and the favourable conditions all year round, Ericeira is now the most popular surf spot in Europe for people from all over the world! Despite the rush of surfers and tourists in general, the picturesque fishing village has never lost its authenticity. It's the perfect place to stroll the narrow streets of the charming old town, go out to eat or party, and also to cycle or skateboard along the coast. The fascinating houses of the old town, whose walls are decorated with the typical Portuguese azulejos, let you dive into the past of the fishing village. The old town is also home to countless small cafés, shops, restaurants and bars, making it the perfect place to stay.3. The best time to travel
Basically, it can be said that Ericeira is a year-round destination. Due to its location on the Mediterranean Sea, temperatures are relatively pleasant all year round. For beginners, it is most pleasant between May and September, but the first attempts with small waves can also be started without any problems outside this period near the beach. If you are more experienced, it is best to come here between September and May. At this time, there is always a constant swell and especially from October onwards, more exciting waves can be expected on site. In general, the most popular months in the high season are from June to September when pleasant summer temperatures prevail. In addition, Ericeira has increasingly taken on the role of host for important surf competitions, including the World Surf League. So if you are interested in surfing competitions, either as a participant or just as a spectator, you can enjoy them especially in the summertime.4. Climate and water temperature
From May to October, which is mainly European summer time, the temperatures are pleasant and there is hardly any rainfall in the region. The highest average temperature is 25 degrees Celsius in August, while the average temperature in January drops to 14 degrees Celsius. As already mentioned, surfers come to the Portuguese village all year round, as pleasant water temperatures of at least 13 degrees in January/February and up to 22 degrees in the summer months can be found.5. Prices
Surf camps in Ericeira have something for every budget. Depending on your requirements, desired comfort and other extras, the prices in the various camps differ, of course, but a surf holiday is basically possible on any budget. On our website you will find prices between 105 € - 640 € per week for your stay in Ericeira. In some camps, the costs for the surf course, equipment or possibly food are already included, in others you have to reckon with additional costs. In many accommodations you can also cater for yourself or try out the various restaurants and bars on site. Ericeira generally has very moderate prices by European standards.6. Transport
The small town with around ten thousand inhabitants is only 51 kilometres from the capital Lisbon, which is why it is advisable to head for the airport there for a trip to Ericeira. From the airport in Lisbon, Ericeira can be easily reached by metro to the Sintra terminus or by bus. If you prefer to travel comfortably by taxi, you should reckon with costs of around 50 euros. However, many of the surf camps also offer an airport transfer or you can decide to hire a car if you plan to explore the region in more detail anyway.7. The best surf spots in Ericeira
With seven kilometres of coastline, there are numerous sandy beaches in Ericeira, with Praia do Guincho, Praia do Sul and Praia do Matadouro being some of the most important. The most challenging waves are without question at Pedra Branca, Ribeira d'Ilhas, Coxos and São Lourenço. Among these, Coxos is one of the most famous beaches for surfers and is only a hotspot for advanced surfers because of the waves that break quickly on shallow reefs. Since beginners are better off staying in beach breaks, the beaches of Foz do Lizandro and Sao Juliao, among others, are particularly suitable.8. The best surf camps in Ericeira

9. What should you look out for when surfing in Ericeira?
In Ericeira you should wear a wetsuit all year round. A wetsuit with a thickness of 4/3 or 5/3 (best with booties) is recommended for the winter time, for the summer time a long 3/2 wetsuit is sufficient.Since many of Ericeira's beaches are surrounded by rocks, and since wind and current are interdependent, be sure to check them before surfing. In Ericeira, the glassy conditions (i.e. almost no wind) or the so-called offshore winds (easterly winds) are best. With the help of websites such as Windguru Ericeira, which provides information about wind and waves, and Magicseeweed, which provides information about the tides, it is possible to prepare yourself in advance for such conditions. But don't worry: If you take a surf course on site, the experienced surf instructors will take you by the hand and know exactly how to behave optimally depending on the weather.
For surfers with experience, it is always an advantage to look for a quiet and deserted spot on the beach, because the fewer people around, the more waves you get for yourself, or the more waves you get, the faster you learn to surf.
Of course, as in any other surfing resort, the rule in Ericeira is: Don't take anyone's wave and no one will take yours! So when you first get into the line-up, wait for the first waves and only catch "your" wave at the next set. That way, everyone gets their turn after the other. To avoid getting in anyone's way, it's important to always paddle in the channel.
10. Where to get surfing equipment in Ericeira?
If you don't want to bring your surf equipment from home or don't have your own, you can rent a wetsuit, surfboard and everything else in Ericeira at numerous places. Some of the shops popular with visitors include 58 Surf Shop, Boardculture Surf Center and Ericeira Surf and Skate. Especially recommended is Boardriders, where you can not only buy or rent equipment, but also find a bar with a sea view and a skate park. Yoga sessions, skate competitions and concerts are also held there occasionally. Of course, many surf camps also offer equipment for rent on site or even include it in their course programmes.11. Insider tips for your free time in Ericeira
In addition to surfing, Ericeira offers leisure activities for all tastes. Activities such as horseback riding on the rocky coasts, fishing, stand up paddling or yoga are often undertaken in the camps as an additional programme or by other local providers. But the surrounding area of the village also offers some excursion possibilities, such as the miniature village made of clay, Aldeia Típica, in the village of Sobreiro. The monastery of Mafra, which was the inspiration for the Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago's book Memorial, is also worth a visit. There are also options to make a detour to Sintra to see its fairytale palaces, or to visit Lisbon at the end or beginning of the trip. When visiting Ericeira, be sure to try some Portuguese delicacies such as pastéis de nata (custard-filled puff pastry), petiscos (Portuguese tapas) or the drink galão (similar to a latte macchiato). In the summer months, we recommend booking visits to restaurants in advance, as the seats in the sea-food restaurants are popular. The traditional Tasca da Boa Viagem is particularly well known for a great ambience with sea views and Portuguese food. At Tik Tapas, too, you can enjoy fresh fish, meat, good wine and tapas of high quality. For those who like to take a detour to a bar or disco at night, the oldest club in Portugal, the Discoteca Ourico, is highly recommended.
