The 8 most important facts about surfing in the region

1. General information

Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island with around 346 days of sunshine per year. It will convince you with its perfect waves, turquoise water and white beaches and will surely make you come back. Fuerteventura offers plenty of fantastic surf beaches, whose gentle beach breaks are particularly suitable for learning to surf. Even though it is often very windy on Fuerteventura, a surfing holiday on the popular holiday island is an absolute must for both surfing beginners and advanced surfers. Escape the grey winter days, enjoy the fresh spring air just after a few hours of flying and plunge into your next surfing adventure!

2. The best time to travel

Basically, you can surf on Fuerteventura all year round as the seasons hardly differ. However, the months from July to November count as the best time of the year to travel for surfing beginners as the waves are gentler there. For experienced surfers, the summer months are usually a bit more nerve-wracking as the lack of tradewind drive blows the northwest swells and thus destroys them. Therefore, it is usually better for experienced surfers to arrive in the winter months as the waves there are also bigger and of better quality than in the summer months. Since the mild climate and water temperatures on the island hardly change, a shorty is sufficient almost all year round. In the winter months you can sometimes reach for a long neoprene.

3. Water temperature

As already mentioned, due to the proximity to the equator, the water temperatures fluctuate much less throughout the year than on the coasts of mainland Europe. In the months of August to mid-November, the water temperature peaks at around 23 degrees, which is why it's even enough to go surfing here in a shorty or a surf bikini. The water temperature reaches its absolute low point in February at around 18 degrees. With a high quality 3/2 wetsuit you will therefore get through the winter in good shape.

4. Why Fuerteventura?

1. It is one of the cheapest surfing destinations in Europe
2. It offers many other water sports besides surfing
3. There is sunshine and mild climate all around the year
4. It is only a few hours flight away from many European destinations
5. There are plenty of surf spots with top waves

5. The best surf spots

It is best to choose a surf spot according to your surfing level:

The East

The strong north-easterly trade winds create amazingly powerful wind swells on the snow-white beaches in front of the hotel strongholds of Jandia (and south of Corralejo) in the summer months, which are particularly suitable for surfing beginners. If you're an advanced surfer, don't miss the great beach breaks of Cruz Roja on a few select winter days.

The West

The conditions here are perfect for beginner surfers, especially in the summer months. The beach of La Pared is probably the most famous beach on the west coast in the south of Fuerteventura. With the right swell and wind conditions, a good left wave can be found here. Near La Pared there are many small sandy beaches which are considered a real insider tip, so go in search of them! Surf spots: La Pared, El Cotillo, Playa de Esquinzo, Playa de Garcey and Cofete.

The North

In the north of Fuerteventura there is probably the most famous coastal strip of the island - the Northshore. Here you will find one reef break after another. However, as the wind susceptibility in the north is extremely high, the surfing conditions can drop a lot, especially in summer. If you're a beginner, it's better to choose a different coast than the north. Even for experienced surfers the waves can be a real challenge, but the north offers perfect conditions especially in autumn and winter due to the south or east wind. Surf spots: Majanicho, Los Lobos, Corralejo, Heirro & Yarro and Bubble.

The South

The south is especially interesting for experienced surfers who want to get barrelled in good offshore conditions. Since most of the surf spots can only be reached via endless gravel roads, you have the advantage here that there are very few surfers hanging around in the water.

6. Surf camps

When you come to Fuerteventura to learn to surf, you will not only meet people who share the same hobby as you, but you will also get to know a unique landscape. Fuerteventura offers many different surf camps with something for everyone. Whether for beginners, pros, old or young, you are sure to find a surf camp that meets your expectations. In the list below, we offer you an overview of camps on Fuerteventura. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to write to us, we will help you!

7. Transport

The easiest way is to take one of the many cheap direct flights to Fuerteventura. From there you can hire a car very cheaply. However, if you feel like taking your own car to the island, there is the option of taking a ferry from Spain. Most camps also offer airport transport, making it easy for you to arrive in comfort and without stress.

8. Price range

The price range for surf camps in Fuerteventura is between 126€ - 810€ per week. Fuerteventura offers a surf camp for every budget where you will meet great people and experience unique days.

The 3 best surf camps on Fuerteventura

Corralejo

Among the most popular places in Fuerteventura, high on the list is the lively town of Corralejo, located in the north of the island and once a small fishing village. Despite the tourist infrastructure which has developed over time, Corralejo has retained its original charm and provides a pure holiday feeling with its beautiful white sandy beaches and small harbour. If you travel to Corralejo, you should not miss the spectacular dune area "El Jable", from which you can also see the small neighbouring island of Los Lobos. In addition to plenty of shopping facilities, restaurants and bars, there are also countless surf camp providers in the area as it is the perfect starting point for exploring the surf spots on the north, east and west coasts. But whether it's water sports or land-based activities such as hiking or mountain biking, Corralejo is the perfect place for almost any crowd and is particularly popular with young people thanks to the local nightlife.

El Cotillo

Also in the north of the island, but on the west coast and much quieter, is the charming village of El Cotillo. The small fishing village has been spared the big tourist rush and, due to its location at the harbour, it is characterised above all by its fish restaurants. El Cotillo is particularly popular with surfers, who can pursue their passion undisturbed on the local beach, due to the optimal wind strengths and swells. Those who also long for some relaxation should definitely visit the beautiful lagoon beaches, the Playas de Los Lagos, in the surrounding area. From the airport, El Cotillo can be reached in about 45 minutes and it is a good idea to book a rental car during your stay in order to be able to explore other places on the island flexibly.

La Pared

If you head more towards the south of Fuerteventura, you usually don't get past the popular holiday resorts of Jandia and Morro Jable. But not far away and situated on the isthmus of the island, surf lovers in particular feel more than comfortable in the quiet village of La Pared. The strong surf here provides ideal conditions for surfing and in the evening, spectacular sunsets can be enjoyed on the beach. Shopping facilities and restaurants are very limited in La Pared, which you should be aware of before arriving. By car, however, you can be at Costa Calma within 10 minutes and the bathing beach Playa del Viejo Rey is also in the immediate vicinity. La Pared is the optimal choice for those who want to spend a surf holiday far away from the tourist strongholds.

Surf & yoga

Not only surfing is one of the most popular trend sports in the world, but yoga has also long since established itself in our society and stands above all for bringing body and mind into harmony. Yoga can be wonderfully combined with surfing because, depending on the practice, it promotes your strength and stability on the one hand, and on the other hand also stretches body regions that are particularly stressed during surfing. So it's no wonder that yoga is already an integral part of many surf camps and can be practised both as preparation and as relaxation after surfing. In many camps, such as the Amanay Surf School and the Nalusurf Surfcamp, you can find pure relaxation with other like-minded people in a yoga session after surfing and thus give the day a perfect ending.
