Summary

Have you ever dreamed of surfing in a tropical paradise with perfect warm water waves to yourself? This is your opportunity. We have a surf camp that opened in June 1998 that will fulfill your ultimate wave fantasies. It is located on a small island in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Panama (Gulf of Chiriqui)

There's also diving, fishing, exploring, or just relaxing in a hammock.  On the island there is a variety of wildlife including monkeys, many types of bird, parrots and deer.

The Surfer Paradise Surf Camp is actually two islands, one being the surf camp island and then a smaller island. The surf camp island has the living accommodations. Cabanas are located on the side of a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Water is supplied by a fresh water spring on top of the hill that has been piped down for drinking and showering. Generator supplies 110-volt electricity. There's a large sandy beach break directly in front of the surf camp. There are also several left point breaks nearby.

Surfing, Surfing, Surfing

The smaller island is about a 30-minute boat ride. This is the island of the largest waves. When the waves are flat everywhere else, you'll find head high wave here on the average. On the north side of the island there are left-handers going off and on the south side of the island there are right breaking waves. (Something for everyone) We provide one major boat trip per day to the various surf breaks.

ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

We are located in the Gulf of Chiriqui in the Republic of Panama, about 80 miles from the border with Costa Rica. There are waves for all surfing levels from beginner to advanced surfers.

CAMP CHARACTER

Camp character is rustic with lots of palm trees and tropical fruit trees surrounding us.

CAMP OPERATOR

Steve Thompson is the owner of the surf camp which started in 1998. I purchased the Surfer Magazine Surf Report of Panama. It had all the known spots listed on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, but there was a large section completely without a surf break. I drove the coastline and hire a boat to take me out to this island and discovered some of the best surf in Central America.

ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING

ACCOMMODATION TYPES

Bungalow rooms with beds with linen and pillow. Night stand and fan is included in the room.

CATERING

Three meals per day are served at the surf camp. The meals revolve around our surfing schedule which can change daily due to the change of tide. In some cases, guests want to leave before dawn to be at the best spots at the right tide. In this situation, a quick breakfast is served (coffee, fruit, bread) and then a full breakfast is served later.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

We can provide surf lessons to those requesting it. Otherwise, we divide the guests into boats, one being for intermediate to advance surfers and the other boat for beginners.

SURF MATERIALS

You can either bring your own board or rent one of surf camp boards. Sizes range from 6'3" to 9'6".

OTHER ACTIVITIES

We have kayaks available for the guests to use on a river that flows by the camp. Also, hikes to island waterfalls, snorkeling, fishing and spearfishing. Soon to come, jetski rentals.

MORE INFO, HOW TO GET THERE & FAQ

 SURROUNDINGS / REGION

Characterization of surroundings/region

This is a tropical island with tropical weather. There is a regular cool breeze from the ocean. There are large mountain in the distance where temperatures can be close to freezing at night.

No more than 12 surfers will be accommodated on the island at one time. I will be taking reservations on a weekly basis and when the week is filled, the week is filled.  We want to keep the place un-crowded with maximum surf for each person.

Activities and facilities

Our main activity is surfing, but we also have a small pool that was recently completed at the surf camp. Also, other water sports, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, spearfishing, hiking, etc.,

 JOURNEY

What do I bring?

The weather is tropical, so all you will need is your trunks, sunglasses, warm water wax and a lot of sunscreen. Reef shoes are a good idea for coral and rock breaks.

Citizens of the U.S.A. must have a valid passport. There is no visa requirement.

Details & Reservations

All guests will arrive at the International Airport in Panama (PTY) on Saturday. (It’s OK to fly into Panama City on Friday, but we will charge you for the extra day) The taxi driver will meet you at the airport and take you to the bus station for immediate departure to the surf camp. The bus will take you to the town of Guabala', depending on the time of day. The bus trip takes about 5 hours. Our driver will be waiting here to take on the 20 minutes ride to the port. If it is after dark, then you will spend a night in the port at some cabanas that we have built. The next morning, our boat will come ashore to pick you up and take you on a 25 minute trip to the island. The island is located in the Gulf of Chiriqui, about 80 miles from the border of Costa Rica. All food, shelter, daily boat trips are included at the surf camp. Beer, soda and snacks are extra. IMPORTANT NOTE: Your surf camp “stay” does not start until you until you arrive at the port facilities. That is because up to that point, you are paying the expenses of taxi and bus. So, if you (for example), arrive at port facilities at 5 a.m., than that is when the clock starts. The actual daily rate is $107, so if you arrive at the port Sunday morning and stay until Friday afternoon, than that is 6 days of surfing.  6 x $107 = $642 total. If want to stay an extra day with a Saturday afternoon surf camp departure, than you will be charged one extra day.

Your departure from the island will be Friday afternoon for the trip back to Panama City. We will arrange your last hotel night in the city and your transport from the hotel to the airport for your Saturday airport departure.

If you wish to have extra days with an airport arrival on Friday and/or a airport departure on Sunday, then you will be charged an additional $107 per day.

Ways to get to the camp

You must fly to the Panama International Airport PTY.  We usually arrange for a taxi to pick up arriving guests and they are transported to the bus station. Taxi costs $30-35 for 1-2 people. Each additional person is $5. Bus ticket is about $15 to the Province of Chiriqui. When the bus stops, the camp van will pick you up and drive you the last 11 kilometers to our private port where our boat will be waiting to take you to the island surf camp.

Important details

Double check your passport to make sure that it has at least 3 months left on it.  Visas are not required to enter Panama as a tourist.
