ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

Pumula Surf Camp is located in Pumula on the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast of South Africa, 1 hour south of Durban City. Surrounded by amazing South African bush, with Stunning views and just a short 300m walk to the surf. Pumula has excellent waves for all levels and is never crowded, a predominantly right hand point break with a mid break and the occasional, very good left hander. With plenty of other beaches all within a 2 min drive or a 5 min walk there are always waves to surf either right here at Pumula beach or a short drive away.

Pumula is a surf camp for all ages and all surf levels. We can only accommodate up to 10 people, so it's never over crowded. We do not allow parties but definitely like to have a few sundowner drinks in the evenings and we do have the occasional gathering. 
We cater for families as well as groups. We do run ladies only camps during the year on certain dates, please inquire directly with us about those. Pumula is a chilled, relaxed spot where most guests want to stay forever :-)
We have dogs and cats on the property so do not permit other dogs.

Pumula Surf Camp is owned and run by the local, legendary Maisch Family. Justin Maisch, owner and head coach has been surfing these waters his whole life. Justin was 6 months old when his parents bought a small holding on the South Coast and opened up Wedge Surfboards, the local Surfboard factory. In 2000, after travelling for a couple years, Justin and his wife Hayley, opened the first Surf School in the area. In 2012 they decided to start the surf camp, they bought an old fisherman's cottage and turned it into the Pumula Surf Camp, the Surf House has been running successful since then. Justin's wife Hayley, runs the Surf House and will help you with your booking, booking tours etc and anything else you need. Hayley is also head cook and makes delicious meals. 

ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING

Pumula Surf Camp, sleeps 8 to 10 people in Private Double rooms and Twin Rooms. 2 private double rooms and 2 twin rooms.

We can provide meals should you wish to come and relax and not have to worry about cooking. We make delicious, home cooked meals to suit all diets. 
If you want you can self cater and cook in our shared kitchen that is fully equipped for all your cooking needs. 
If you want to book meals with us, please book meals for your first day before arrival so that we can be prepared for your individual dietary needs. You can choose one of our package deals that include meals.

We also have a wood fired pizza oven and do Pizza night every Saturday, Pizza's can be booked once you are here @R100pp

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

Our Surf Courses are mainly tailored made to suit your needs. We specialize in getting to know what our clients need and catering for that in our surf classes. Our instructors will be in the water with you at all times. Our courses are around 1.5 to 2 hours long per session for in house clients. We do our surf lessons at our local Pumula beach, unless conditions are not good, then we will take you to the next beach with the better conditions for your level.
We do offer outside surf lessons should you just need lessons, they are 1 hour long
Private lessons R400pp per hour
Groups 2 to 4  R300pp per hour 

We use specific unique long boards for our surf course, they were designed and manufactured by Justin and his brother. They are resin boards, with a soft top padding on top of the resin. These boards are great quality and perform better then the regular soft top boards. Should you require a more professional board we have loads at the surf factory to choose from. Please tell us before booking if you require a specific board.
We provide boards and rash vests or wetsuits, however, we do not have loads of rashies and wetsuits so you welcome to bring your own.
Rental of boards outside of surf lessons is permitted for the more intermediate to advanced surfers and cost R200 per board per day

We do yoga classes on site. Pilates classes can be organized. We also offer Massage on our forest yoga deck, please note all these activities must be booked in advance.
Yoga classes are R150pp. Pilates R150pp. Massage prices are on request, as it depends what type of massage you would like.
We do tours to various local places of interest, cultural tours and adventure tours. Prices range from R350pp per tour depending on the group size and the distance for the activity.

Our surf spots are all predominantly right hand point breaks, and mid breaks. Pumula is a short 300m walk from the Surf House.
We do have left hander spots when the swell is right

Crowd factor and local people

Uncrowded waves, uncrowded beaches. Locals are chilled and friendly as long as surf etiquette is in place and have respect for the locals. 

Characterization of surroundings/region

Pumula is a small seaside village, small convenience store and bottle shop in walking distance. Bigger towns are a 5 min drive away. Locals are chilled and friendly. Main language spoken in English as well as Afrikaans and Zulu. Currency is South African Rands, generally things are very affordable, food can be pricey, it depends what you want and where you shop. Restaurants are affordable with meal prices ranging from R80 to R250 per meal.
A yellow fever vaccine is required to enter South Africa.

Ways to get to the camp

From King Shaka International aiport in Durban you can catch a shuttle to Pumula Surf Camp, cost is R220pp one way. You can also get a private pick up at a cost of R1600 one way. We can book the shuttle service for you if you like, or take a look a www.southernshuttle.co.za 

Important details

There is no public transport once you at at the Surf House, although a private taxi can be arranged when you are here.
