 Playa Hermosa offers constant waves for beginners as well as advanced surfers.
Other surrounding surfspots (no shuttle service available on our part) to explore are:

– Santa Teresa: a very popular surf spot for all levels of experiences with numerous beachbreaks
– Playa Carmen: centrally located „beachbreak“
– Mal Pais: Indo-style ‘reefbreak’ (sunset reef) for pros
– Manzanillo: excellent outer reefbreak for big waves

Our assortment of surfboards range from Shortboards-to-Malibus-to-Longboards in all available sizes.
Surfboard rental: US$100 per week (all popular boards available).

– Quad rentals: price varies according to season and length of time / please inquire if interested

Should you be urged to go on a shopping spree or explore the night life, check out Santa Teresa (10 to 15 minutes by car). There you’ll find shops of all kind, numerous restaurants, cafes and bars. Here too, the Early Bird Surfhouse staff will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

SURF CONDITIONS

Breaks directly at the main spot and at nearby spots

Here you’ll find a pleasant coast line with brown sand, situated between wooded mountains, continuous surf (beachbreak) and magnificent natural tidal basins for swimming and snorkling.

Crowd factor and local people

The less populated and quiet Playa Hermosa has considerably fewer visitors, contrary to its neighbors in the south (Santa Teresa). This offers the chance to be first in the water or on the beach. Next to surfing you can also take wonderful walks on the beach, go jogging or take your camera on an expedition (almost always worth it!)

What’s the local currency?
Costa Rica’s currency is the Colon. US-Dollars and common credit cards are
also widely accepted.

What immunizations are required for Costa Rica?
Since July 30th 2007, the Costa Rican authorities request that travellers from the following countries get the immunization for yellow fever: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador as well as French Guyana. Additionally, we recommend you get the Hepatitis A and B vaccine!

JOURNEY

---

There are multiple ways to travel from the international airport in San Jose

1) DIRECT BUS TO MAL PAIS:
There are daily busses going to Mal Pais / Santa Teresa at 6:00 & 14:00 leaving from „nueva terminal / transporte cobano in San Jose.
Buy the ticket as you enter the bus directly from the bus driver. Traveltime is 6 hours and the ticket price is US$ 12.
At the next to last bus stop Mal Pais / Playa Carmen you’ll find cabs that take you to the „Early Bird“ Surfhouse or surf camp in Costa Rica for about US$ 14 .

2) INLANDFLIGHT TO TAMBOR:
You can take an inland flight from the international airport with Sansa Air (www.flysansa.com) or Nature Air (www.natureair.com) .
Both airlines fly several times a day (flight time 25 minutes). It’s very important to get information from the providers early enough about booking and flight times.
At the airport Tambor there are enough taxis to take you to the „Early Bird“ Surfhouse or surf camp in Costa Rica (travel time 1 hour, taxi cost about US$ 50).

3) SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE:
Reserve a shuttle bus from the airport or hotel in San Jose to the ‘Early Bird’ Surfhouse or surf camp in Costa Rica. Shuttle bus service info can be obtained from Tropical Tours or Montezuma Expeditions.

In case of overnight in San Jose we recommend the Hotel Volcanes in Alajuela (5 minutes by car from the airport).
