ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

Since early/middle 1990s surfers visiting the Mentawai Islands to experience untouched rainforest and superb waves. The Mentawai Islands are such a great place for surf with classic waves breaking in crystal clear and warm water. What more could anyone want. The only way to surf all of the many waves in the Mentawai Islands and stay away from the mosquitos, is only by boat. Boats give you freedom and movability. Hundreds of “world-class” reef and beach breaks exists up here, making it one of the most surf-infested regions in the world. Most spots host mechanical perfection and vary in intensity for all level of surfer, making it an ideal surf vacation location.
Our good friend, the South Indian Ocean, produces the swells that have the islands pumping consistently from February through out November at 3-15 ft, and sometimes bigger! And the cyclone swells keep the surf rolling in throughout the remainder of the year. You come to the Mentawai's, you get surf! The calm winds ensure that the swells that arrive are always lined up and of a very high standard.

ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING

Launched in late ’99, The Naga Laut has been continually upgraded to ensure a comfortable and unique experience. Naga Laut has been designed exclusively for upmarket surf charters in the Mentawai Islands. The interior has been beautifully finished in polished local timbers. A spacious living area onboard provides all the amenities of home including full air conditioning, a new satellite phone, TV, DVD, VCD, WIFI, fridge, freezer, fishing and snorkeling gear. Naga Laut has 4 comfortable two-bed cabins, and 1 big four-bed cabin, all with multiple power sockets to keep your laptops, phones and cameras charged, safe, and out of the way. On special request, Naga Laut can hold up to 14 surfers but sails most comfortably with 8 to 10.
We have two tenders, a Boston Whaler fiberglass speedboat with a Yamaha 85 hp to get you quickly and comfortably to the line-up, and a smaller zodiac with a 15hp. Both are always on standby to quickly get you to the waves, do shore excursions or go fishing.

The crew will be up before light preparing your first breakfast of cereals,muesli, fruit salad, coffee and tea to have you out there on the dawn patrolwith plenty of energy. Your second breakfast will be freshly cooked for you after your first surf to keep you charging until lunch is ready.
Then afterburning off your lunch getting barreled all afternoon, sit back and enjoy themagic sunsets with complimentary beers and snacks and take in theMentawai atmosphere while dinner is prepared for you. Our healthy, deliciousand nutritious meals each day are based on a mix of Western, Indonesian andChinese cuisine. And a special Lamb Roast, better than Mum’s, for your lastdinner in the Mentawai’s.
Have as many juices or sodas as you like to keepyour hydrated for the day, and 4 complimentary Beers to complete a good dayof surfing. Bottled water and snacks are always on hand too. Hot water is available for self serve tea and coffee.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

Our local Mentawaian surf guide is one of the most experienced surf guides in the Mentawais. One of them will be your surf guide for your trip. He knows every nook and cranny of the Mentawai Islands, even a few sneaky secret spots, to have you in the right place at the right time, with no, or minimal crowds.
He gained experience on a number of boats since the early 90’s before joining us on the Naga Laut. They are well known for their excellent local knowledge, the ability to assess conditions and always find amazing and uncrowded waves. When not surfing themselves, their digital CANON camera equipped with a 400mm zoom lens will follow you while getting barreled or get that magic sequence of doing the hack of your life.

FISHING ON MENTAWAI SURF CHARTER BOAT
Fishing as a sport in the Mentawais is still in its infancy though indications of its potential can be seen in the types of fish caught by surf charter operators over the last few years. These fish include the common pelagic such as Spanish Mackerel, Tuna, Wahoo and Barracuda. More exotic species such as Sailfish and Marlin have been caught recently trolling in the Sipora channel. Other fish commonly caught close by are Golden Travelly and Coral Trout.
The zone around ‘Setan Island’, North Sipora, is possibly the most abundant fishing ground in the Mentawais. Another spot populated of schools of tuna and the giants GT is a secret spot close to the Ht’s area. Onboard the Naga Laut trolling rigs are available for guests to use. We also have a range of spinning rods for your use. Of course you are more than welcome to bring your own gear.
Spearfishing is allowed in limited areas for free divers only. The Mentawais has been featured as a spearfishing destination on several Hawaiian dive magazine articles.

FAQ
What size boards should I bring and how many?
3 boards is generally enough: your normal shorty, mid (say 6’6 – 6’8) and a gun (7’0) just in case a few thick ones come through whilst we’re out there. If you feel you need to bring more it would be wise to double up on your shortboard. A note on glass jobs: if you are getting boards made especially for the trip, it is a good idea to go for a mid weight glass job. Nothing worse than snapping your brand new featherweight shooter on the first day!

What if I hurt myself?
In the first instance, your skipper holds a St Johns Senior First Aid Certificate. Further assistance can be reached via use of the satfone +870 776 44 0873; we have the ability to consult direct with doctors in Australia or your own GP. Finally in the slim chance that you would need to be evacuated out, your travel insurance will cover you.

What communications are available on board?
We communicate with other boats and shore bases in Padang via HF and VHF marine radio. The sat phone +870 776 44 0873 is a Byru Marine model and operates via the stable ACES satellite network. It’s a good idea to note the sat phone number from our contact page and leave it with someone at home in case you need to be contacted.

How many waves do you surf in one day?
Depends on swell, winds, movements of other boats in the area and how fit you are! Some days you could easily find yourself having 3 sessions at one location. Other times it is possible to surf 3 different waves in a day.

Is it a long way between locations?
In parts of the Northern area you will find 4 surfable waves in less than a mile radius. Other times it is a few hours steaming between breaks, most of which we do at night.

What clothes should I bring?
As little as possible. You will be onboard for nearly the whole duration of your trip and generally wearing a pair of boardies and a t-shirt (if your are a guy that is!)
