9 Pies is a school pioneering in the instruction of surfing in Andalusia, an official centre of the Federación Española de Surf, a company of Active Tourism with the Junta de Andalucía and forms part of Aesop (the Official Association of surf schools in El Palmar) and we are doing what we love, teaching how to surf since 2005.
Situated in El Palmar, Vejer de la Frontera, on a strip of coastline with a mild climate all year round and charming, unspoilt beaches and amazing scenery. El Palmar is a beach full of perfect peaks for learning to surf or to improve your surfing.
We’ve had thousands of students of all ages and nationalities participating in our courses with who we’ve had the chance to share our passion for the sport and the ocean.
Our instructors are all qualified with the Federación Española de Surf and the International Surfing Association, instructing classes in English and Spanish in reduced groups to offer the best possible level of teaching.
We have all the necessary equipment available for our classes and also for rental, especially suited to different skill level and sizes. Whether it’s your first time surfing or you already know how to ride a wave but want to learn how to ride walls, get more speed and do some tricks, our unique teaching method will help you to make rapid progress in a simple and pleasant environment. Depending on conditions or the needs of our students, we also offer the classes in nearby locations such as Barbate, Los Caños de Meca, Roche or Conil.

ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Our Surf Camp is located 300 metres from the beach in a wild area and 4 minutes biking from our Surf school in front of main spot.

El Palmar is a small rural town that occupies 8 kms of semi-virgin Atlantic coast in the municipality of Vejer. Its cultivated fields and palm trees are testimony to its not too distant past, in which agriculture and livestock ensured its economic sustenance, gradually replaced today by the beach’s tourism.

Small houses are dotted around the streets, offering visitors a paradise for active tourism and outdoor sport . From Conil to Los Caños there are different stretches of coastline of clear waters that lap sandy dunes of high ecological value. The most characteristic landmark of El Palmar is the Almenara Tower, used over the centuries to alert the population of potential dangers.

Considered the swell magnet and most consistent surf spot on the Andalusian coast, its beach-break is ideal for beginners in the surf throughout the year and especially attractive from October to May for experienced surfers as it is when you get the larger swells.

In El Palmar you can find all kinds of facilities: supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacy, tobacconist, mechanical shop, butcher, fishmonger, cottages, bars .... and of course our school and surf camp – 9Pies. While in summer it’s quite crowded, the rest of the year offers mild temperatures and a tranquil atmosphere to enjoy with the five senses.

CAMP CHARACTER

People from 18 to 50`s years old enjoy our camp to share a unique experience, but also familys with kids, couples...find a relaxing athmosphere of respect and happiness.

CAMP OPERATOR

Since the moment that Kike experimented with the sensation of gliding over the waves on a board he was smitten with the sport. His passion for surfing started to change his life, whether in the beaches of Cádiz, Huelva, the Portuguese Algarve, Morocco, Cantabria or the Canary Islands, he was always searching for the perfect conditions to improve his performance and style in the water. Being a rugby player, a challenging and disciplined sport for which he trained regularly and systematically, his surfing was self-taught. As many other at that time, his way of learning was by focusing on the experienced surfers and learning from their behaviour while using a short board he found in an old basement.

At that time, there were neither surf schools nor internet in Andalusia, which meant that knowledge was passed on among friends and acquaintances by candlelight. During his frequent excursions to the Algarve, he taught his friends the secrets of the 1000 year old art of riding waves and everything related to it. And so 9Pies was born, as a way of transmitting knowledge of the waves to the people attracted to surfing. Using thick and large longboards for the ability to enjoy surfing from the first contact with the waves, the school was baptised 9Pies (9 feet). In this way, he started teaching in El Palmar with Andy and created the school in 2005, a place open to all where he could teach with his own personal touch distinguished by his character. The training of the instructors taught by 9Pies allowed them to open their own schools in the area, as in those years there were only 2 or 3 schools around.
Over the years 9Pies has taught thousands of people, sharing experiences and special moments while maintaining our spirit of respect for nature, people and the sport. At the same time we adapt ourselves to new times. The progression of surfing is unstoppable and it’s our commitment to steer it in the right direction to share our passion so that everyone can enjoy it.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

We offer classes all year round in the morning and afternoon. In summer,morning classes are at 10:00 and 12:30 and afternoon classes at 16:00 and 18:30 (times can change depending on tides). Individual classes are offered to adults and children from the age of 6. In our group classes we do our best to assure that students. Lessons in spanish and english.

SURF MATERIALS

At 9Pies we have a great amount of boards of multiple sizes and different models; from softboards for beginners to Cortez, Torq and BIC epoxy boards for initiated surfers as well as foam from best shapers. From boards smaller than 6ft for the smallest or for the summer waves to 10ft boards for the taller people. Thursters, funboards, mini-malibu’s, fishes, longboards, stand-up paddles… you are sure to find something for you among our selection of more than 50 surfboards. We also have wetsuits available from the best brands such as Xcell and Quicksilver for men and women and in all sizes for winter as well as summer.

SURF CONDITIONS

-Season:
#For experienced surfers: the most consistent time is from October to April, with January and February having the most days that you'll find waves.
#For intermediate surfers, from September to June are good conditions
#For beginners: throughout the year there are suitable waves for learning to surf

- Weather and wetsuits:
Something which sets us apart from other areas of the peninsula is the mild weather we have most of the year. In December, January and February a 4/3 wetsuit is sufficient, while in October, November, March, April and May a 3/2 is warm enough. In June, July, August and September you can surf in a swimsuit or surf shorts.

- Surfboards and waves:
In summer, except for some isolated days, the waves are small and not very powerful, so you could use a longboard or a board with volume.
The rest of the year you can find waves of over two meters on the best days, but usually you’ll be fine if you bring a board with which you feel comfortable in waves of half a meter to a meter and a half. Also, contrary to what many people think, if you are looking for powerful, hollow waves you can also find them in El Palmar.

-Locals and overcrowding:
Surfing in Cadiz has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years. The good days are usually quite full, and obviously more festive when it’s sunny, but when it gets really serious, many people clear out.
In many cases, respect for the basic rules of surfing are absent. Although, if you are someone who rises early and goes looking for less crowded spots, you sure to find your reward.
There are a few critical spots where you can have serious problems if you go in, but in the vast majority of cases, as in most of the world, if you use common sense, you can surf without any complications.

Transfers

We can collect you from the bus or train station and the airport.

By bus
The bus is a cheap and comfortable option to arrive to Conil. There are regular connections to the surroundings like Vejer, Chiclana, Barbate and also to the bigger cities. Comes is the bus company

- From Jerez: M-251 line (Jerez- Conil / Atlanterra- Sevilla). Monday to friday daparture at 14:15h from Jerez , arriving Conil at 15:10h (way back leaving Conil at 7:30 am arriving Jerez at 8:40 am). Price is around 5€
- From Cádiz: Cádiz. bus station T.G Comes telephone 956 807 059
M-910 line (Cádiz - Conil): 1h 10 minuts long
M-911 line (Cádiz-Conil-Barbate trough La Barca and Caños): 50 minutes
M-912 line (Cádiz-Conil-Atlanterra): 50 minutes
M-913 line (Cadiz-Conil-Barbate by Hospital): 1h and 10 minutes
Price is around 5€ per ticket
- From Sevilla: From Prado Bus Station to Conil, line is Sevilla- Atlanterra, costs 13€, there are different times. If you stop out of Conil we can pick you up
- From Madrid: South bus station. The best option is to arrive to Sevilla or Cádiz and from there take another bus to Conil. SECORBUS (San Fernando - Cádiz - Jerez - Madrid).
- From Málaga: There is a daily bus at 7:30 am and you can stop at Conil at 12:15h ( Málaga-Algeciras- Cadiz line). From Conil to Málaga you can take a bus at 7:55 am or 14:55 pm. 4 hours of journey.

By car
It’s very easy to travel to El Palmar by car. From the A-48 take exit 26, Conil Playas, whether you are coming from Cádiz or Algeciras. (Surfhouse adress is Mirador de Castilnovo 43, Conil.) From there all you have to do it follow the indications and you’ll find us a few meters to the east of the tower once you arrive in El Palmar

By plane
The closest airports to El Palmar are Jerez, Sevilla and Málaga in which you can find low cost flights that have special offers from many European cities. Once here, we can collect you or you can travel by bus

- Jerez, 75 kms , XRY: It´s closest airport. You can rent a car (Europcar, Avis and Centauro), ask for a transfer or take a bus or train from airport to Jerez bus station and from there take M-251 line (Jerez- Conil / Atlaterra- Sevilla), Comes company. Other option is go to Cádiz and then to Conil. Check bus connections
- Sevilla, 130 kms, SVQ: You can rent a car or ask for a transfer. It´s easy to take a quick bus to Prado Bus Station and then other bus to Conil, check bus connection
- Málaga, 240 kms, AGP: You can take a 15 minutes bus to Bus Station and the a bus to Conil leaving every day at 7:30 am (arrives 12:15 h to Conil, Málaga- Algeciras- Cádiz line).

The closest train station is in San Fernando from where we can pick you up, but if you prefer come by bus, it´s better to get to Cádiz so you will finf more bus connections to Conil. It’s a great option if you’re coming from Madrid, you can take a direct and confortable Alvia train.
