ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

We are located within a short walk of the town of Praia da Luz.  The town is self-contained and has everything you might need for your stay - bars, restaurants, shops, supermarkets and much more. 

The main beach is long, sandy and beautiful.  If conditions allow, it is possible to surf here, but often the best waves are found on the west coast (around 25 minutes drive) and we will take you by minibus.  A decision on the choice of beach will be made on the day (depending upon conditions) but fear not as you can pretty much find surf every day of the year.

AltaVista Surf Lodge offers a very chilled vibe.  The setting is perfect for those that wish to lounge around the pool, or take part in some yoga.  Good music is always part of our ethos and the bar is open from the afternoon.  If you want a party scene, then Lagos is around 10 minutes away in a taxi.

Hello everyone! We are Jon and Anna.  Jon founded AltaVista around 8 years ago being passionate about everything related to watersports and adventures.  He wanted to build a community for like minded adventure seekers. 

Anna joined around 4 years later and completely fell in love with the project.  Our Lodge is our life and passion.  We are so grateful to our little community for coming back to us time and time again.  The feeling is unimaginably rewarding.  

ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING

AltaVista Surf Lodge offers Private rooms or a Shared Dorm.  Each room has it's own private ensuite shower room and opens onto terraces that enjoy direct access to the pool and sub tropical gardens.

AltaVista lives up to it's name 'High View' with spectacular panoramic views across open countryside to the sea or to the Monchique Hills with amazing sunrises and sunsets.  With over 5000 m2 of gardens and orchards, everyone at AltaVista can comfortably maintain social distancing and continue to enjoy our ethos of great social vibes.

AltaVista Surf Lodge offers bed and breakfast.  Each room has a private fridge and there are cooking facilities in the communal kitchen.  There is also a delicious weekly BBQ.  The town of Praia da Luz is a short walk away with its wide range of shops, bars and restaurants.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

Group size - maximum 26 people; 8 surfers per instructor is the maximum allowance; The course is full with lessons in the morning and afternoon with a break for picnic lunch.

Groups will be split into Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.  Be sure to advise us of your level of expertise.

All materials are provided.  Please only bring sun cream and a towel.

Crowd factor and local people

Due to the large number of surf beaches in close proximity to AltaVista, it never feels crowded or busy.  Most of the beaches have large expanses of sand offering plenty of space even in peak season.

Characterization of surroundings/region

Praia da Luz is around 10 minutes drive from the historic city of Lagos and 20 minutes to the surf village of Sagres.  The wild and wonderful west coast, synonymous with world class surfing, is just 25 minutes away. Portuguese is of course the main language, though English and German are widely spoken.  The pace of life is easy-going and locals are very friendly.  The lodge lies 1 hour west of Faro airport.

Activities and facilities

Praia da Luz offers a relaxed setting with a number of excellent bars and restaurants.  It is not a party town, though Lagos is only 10 minutes away and we arrange big night's out for those that would like to participate.  We also offer a weekly on-site BBQ and organise meals in local restaurants.

At the lodge we have a large outdoor swimming pool, an indoor pool, table tennis, hammocks, volleyball, table football, a pool table and enormous gardens to enable people to chill out or take part in some yoga.  There is never any pressure to undertake any activity but we have daily lists of all our exciting events for those wishing to indulge.

Ways to get to the camp

AltaVista is positioned 1 hour west of Faro airport.  We offer private transfers, shared transfers or excellent value car hire.  The buses and trains operate from Faro city centre (not the airport) but only go as far as Lagos (10 minutes drive from AltaVista).
