ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

Situated on the north-west coast of Africa, Morocco is exposed to the frontal lows coming off North America, pumping out solid north and north-west ground swell that charges the Moroccan coastline. While the winter storms in the northern hemisphere give Europe rain, cold temperatures and strong on-shore flow, in Morocco the sun shines and the surf is going off. The coastline of Morocco looks like it’s been drawn by Picasso with a density of breaks and a variety of surf qualities, providing unreal surf potential. There is more to the surf in Morocco than one may think, from long 500 metre peelers to shallow death defying slabs, there is waves that suit all ability levels. Our knowledge of the Moroccan coastline gives us the advantage to score the best waves with the conditions we have on any given day.

CAMP OPERATOR

Sahara Surf is a registered surf company based in Tamraght – Morocco, specialized in organizing guided surf tours to all Morocco’s best surfing destinations. We have a reputation for surfing the best waves, qualities of surf that people don’t think exist in Morocco. With over fifteen years surfing, surf guiding and exploring Morocco’s coastline, the experiences and local knowledge of the Sahara Surf team give us the advantage to score the best conditions along Morocco’s massive coastline on any given day.

SURF COURSE AND ACTIVITIES

SURF COURSE DETAILS

We pride ourselves on the quality of our surf instruction, we go beyond teaching you basic technical skills by assessing your ability and developing an individualized surf program that will take you to the next level. Our surf school is for all levels of surfers. Our student to teacher ratio is six-to-one and you will be placed in a surf group based on your skill level and experience. By mid week, you will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with your instructor to receive the attention you deserve.

All our staff are expert, experienced coaches,  all are ISA qualified and also lifeguard certified. Between them they have many years experience teaching and coaching surfers of all levels .

You’ll be amazed at how fast you will be up and riding waves. With many of our guests being beginners, our patient staff is well-prepared to teach you the basics of surfing: proper etiquette, water safety, wave riding skills (how to properly stand up and ride waves), and effective paddling techniques, as well as preparing you for surfing your home break.

Your instructor will assess your skill level and implement a progressive program to strengthen your surfing ability. We’ll focus on wave-reading and catching ability, developing greater control in slightly more challenging waves, mastering  the techniques necessary to generate greater speed and connecting more fluid turns.

SURROUNDINGS / REGION

Characterization of surroundings/region

Sahara

Top world class waves, unsurfed and secret spots scattered along over 1500 km of coast. There is a big chance that you will be the first ever to surf some spots. Surf is totally empty, good and bad! If you see a surfer in the Sahara you feel like you want to have a chat. Generally you’re pretty much guaranteed to have the waves to yourself. There is a variety of quality waves – beach-breaks, point-breaks, reef and slabs. Sahara is not an easy surf trip – expect long drives and hikes in the desert to get to surf spots. Hot weather in the day and cold temperature at night. People in the Sahara are friendly and welcoming, proud of their rich culture and traditions. As you travel south through towns and village you feel like traveling back in time towards the 80s or the 70s.  A lot of people never had Camel meat before, in the Sahara Camel meat is the most available, it is very delicious and healthy. Beside surfing there is plenty of activities you can do and have a great time when the surf is small.  Surfing the Sahara desert west coast is truly a lifetime surf experience!

Central Morocco

Taghazout is a well known surf destination. Taghazout village is located 16km north of Agadir in the biggest bay in Morocco. Taghazout offers unreal surf – Anchor Point, Mysteries, Killer Point, Draculas and Boilers are the famous surf spots along this stretch of coast. In the main surf season 80% of the surfers who come to Morocco stay in Taghazout, this means the point breaks and the village get very busy. There are other point breaks and spots north and south of Taghazout, so tripping a bit further out you’ll surf un-crowded spots and take in the unspoilt landscapes and traditional culture of Morocco.

Sidi Ifni is 120km south of Agadir, the road down to Sidi Ifni is the gateway to the Sahara. A picturesque little costal village, Sidi Ifni was built by the Spanish during their colonisation. Their influence is apparent in the white and blue of the buildings, a contrast to the typical reds and pinks in other parts of Morocco. Here there is great surf potential with a lot of secret spots North and South.

Safi is located about 320 km north of Agadir. The famous point break of Safi is one of the ten best point breaks in the world. A swell of over 10 foot will wake this sleeping monster, delivering one of the most serious barrels. The old imperial city of Safi boasts one of Morocco’s most important ports, once considered the worlds’ sardine capital it remains one of the best places to eat sardines in Morocco. Safi is now an important center for phosphate mining and is known for producing pottery. If you have energy post surf you can explore the souks inside the Medina walls – a whole other world of fragrant spices, lilting music, beautiful buildings and historical monuments.

JOURNEY

Ways to get to the camp

All surf trips start from Agadir. To get here you can either fly direct into Agadir airport, which is well served by budget airlines from across Europe, or you can fly into Marrakech, which has a greater range of direct flights. We recommend using Sky Scanner to find the best flight options.

Getting to Agadir from Marrakech is easy. You can either get a taxi (which we will arrange) or you can jump on the bus. A taxi costs 1000DH (about €100) travel time is about two and a half hours and up to four people can travel in a taxi. The bus costs 100DH (about €10) and travel time is about three and a half hours. On arrival in Marrakech take a petit taxi from the airport to the bus station where the buses depart roughly every two hours. The two main bus companies are Supratours and CTM. The buses are clean, efficient and air conditioned and we’ll be there to meet you at the bus station in Agadir.

Transfers to and from Agadir airport and bus station are included in all packages. Marrakesh airport transfers are included for groups of four people or more!
