Summary

Hostel & Surfcamp 55 offers you the opportunity to enjoy a unique, personalized, and spectacular surfing experience all year round. This special opportunity will connect you to the sea and other special places and allow you to surf along the best surf spots with great, qualified surf coaches and surf lovers.
You will be accommodated at Hostel & Surfcamp 55. The house can accommodate up to 22 guests in seven thematic rooms with sea view and private washbasin. The larger dorm rooms have private bathrooms. You can choose to stay in a single room or in a dorm.
This surf camp is a 7 days/6 nights camp and includes six-day all levels surf lesson. Each surf lesson will take about two and a half or three hours. The group has a maximum of six students per teacher so that your surf class can be the most personalized and as profitable as possible. The surf sessions will take place at the suitable beach for you and your surf level.

LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

The closest surfing spot is just in front of the house, 5 min walking distance, 20 min by foot to the south you find a very beautiful beach break, most of the other surf spots are to the north. In winter, when the swell is very big you can surf the harbour which is a 10 min walk, and further on you have the North beach and Saõ Sebastioão and Matadouro beach. Which takes you about 20 min to get there. More 7 spots are further to the norht. In the summer sesason there is also a beach bus going from the south to the north stoping at all spots. It costs only 1€ and has a trailer attached to transport the boards, the town centre is just a 5 min walk always straight, Ericeira offers a very big choice of different spots, from beginner level up to advanced for all different conditions.

CAMP CHARACTER

As our Camp is a Hostel including a Surf School we offer all different variations of stays here. People can just come and book accommodation wihtout surfing, we have a lot of guest who already know how to surf and go on their own then, we also have a lot of guest who book accommodation and surf lessons from day to day, and other guests book the package that includes the surfing and the accommodation. This diversity brings our special 55 vibes to the hostel which provides the feeling of a second home.

CAMP OPERATOR

The owner of the hostel is a portuguese couple, Gonçalo and Andreia, which are both very experienced surfers and body boarders. Gonçalo already participated in a lot of body board competitions and has an imense knowledge of the ocean and all kinds of waves. Both travelled all around the world to surf there. The instructors working there are also experienced surfers and trainers.

SURF COURSE DETAIL

Our surf team is an excellent Ericeira waves connoisseur and beyond, we have been surfing for over 20 years and have traveled all over the world to surf. Surf lessons - What is included
Our surf lessons for all levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced) take 2:30hr/3hr every day; To provide the best possible progress for you, we teach in small groups with excellent surf teachers; Different surf coach & surf spots for the different surfing levels; Surf spot that present the best surf/conditions of that day to each level of surfing; Qualified Surf Instructors; Photo & video analyze (extra); You are entitled to surf lesson, insurance, surfing equipment, transportation surf house/beach.
Our surf lessons are always in small groups by teachers and have a maximum of 6 students per teacher.
The hours of the lesson change from day to day as we have to go with the tides and its also dependant on the daily conditions.

Theory lessons: In the theory lessons we will talk about different topics of surfing. Starting by the surf culture and rules of surfing, the ocean in general, how waves and conditions work, how to read the forecasts, different surf spots in general and Ericeira specific spots. PPT-paddeling, positioning and timing. You will be filmed during the surf lesson, so we can analyze your surfing afterwards and give you a more precize feedback to improve your skills

NOTE: In the first surf lessons the coach is going to analyze the level, and propose the surfing plan objectives for the next days.

SURF MATERIALS

We have all different kinds of boards here, from the foam board up to fiberglass short boards. The wetsuits we use are all 4:3 thickness. For the surf lessons all the equipment is provided and teh transfer to the beach is oncluded. The guest can use the equipment after or before the lesson for free for private practice, but then there is no transfer included.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

We work together with 2 different yoga studios, the prices are between 10-14€ per lesson (60min) both are in walking distance of 15 min.
We have some skate boards here which are free to use and bike for rent 5€ per day.

SURF CONDITIONS

Breaks directly at the main spot and at nearby spots
Ericiera provides all sorts of breaks, beach and reef, but mostly reef breaks. they are all to reach within 10 min by car. 5 of them it is easy to walk to. Or in summer season just go with the beach bus.

Seasonal conditions
In Ericeira you can surf all year around. Usually in summer the waves are smaller and more gentle, the water temperature can get up to 19/20 degrees in end August - September.
In spring and autum time the weather is already very nice (mostly) but the swell uses to be a bit bigger and the water temperature is around 15-17 degrees. Late autum is a very beautiful time around here with usually great weather and waves.
The water temperature in winter is around 13 degrees and it can be quiet windy. It is nice to use a bit warmer wetsuit and on some days a hoody. But there will be still days with big glassy waves and a lot of sunshine. If it gets too big and messy the harbour is another option to surf as it is quiet sheltered there.

Crowd factor and local people
During the summer season it gets quite crowded here (June-August/September) but in the off season you will find for sure some spots more quiet. In general the local people are friendly here.

SURROUNDINGS / REGION

Characterization of surroundings/region
Ericeira is about 50km form Lisbon downtown, you can easily get there with the direct bus from Campo Grande which takes about 50min up to 1.5hr (dependant on the bus), the airport is just a 35 min ride by car away. Another quite famous surf town, Peniche is about 1hr with the car. Ericeira is located at the beautiful still very natural west coast line of Portugal.
Just 30 min by bus is the beautiful tonw Sintra, which is definitely worth a visit. There you can find the UNESCO world cultural heritage to visit.
Due to the amount of tourists in this region locals speak English very well. Of course if you go more to the country side to small towns it is mandatory to speak Portuguese to get along.

Activities and facilities
In the town center of Ericeira you can find various little bars, cafés and restaurant. The town is quite famous for it´s seafood, which is just delicious.

Ways to get to the camp
If you fly into Lisbon airport it is very easy to get here by bus from the bus station Campo Grande. We also offer airport transfers. If you prefer to be more flexible around here you can of course also rent a car (but the town center, bars, supermakets and beaches are reachable by foot).

Lisbon airport transfer At the airport the meeting point is the Starbucks café, we will call or text you once we arrived. We will be with our van/car outside in front of the exit door at Starbucks waiting for you. So please send us your flight number, arrival time and mobile number.
Please note that we charge an extra 10€ for transfers between 22:30hr – 07:30hr during the night.
