We are locals sharing this magical land.
I’m Joaquín “Joaco,” from Santiago Astata on the Chontal coast. Growing up in Playa La Colorada among local fishermen, I developed a deep love for the ocean. After studying away from home, I returned at 27 and discovered surfing, spending over 15 years as a tour leader and surf guide in the Salina Cruz and Huatulco area. I’m passionate about involving locals in tourism, creating opportunities for our communities while preserving our natural resources. ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING

Lodging: We offer affordable all-inclusive surf packages starting at $900 for a 6-day stay. You can also choose from comfortable local hotels, surf camps, or boutique accommodations in Salina Cruz and Huatulco.

Can I reserve a private room?
– All our packages include shared accommodation with spaces for between 2 and 4 surfers, but if you require it we can give you a space just for you or your partner for an additional cost. Remember that surfing is about sharing and we like that philosophy, however if you require your own space we will do everything possible so that you enjoy your stay.

Surf Day Itinerary (The itinerary may change depending on weather conditions**) 5:00 AM – Early Rise – Kick off your day with a nutritious breakfast, featuring fresh local fruits, eggs, and strong coffee to energize you for the waves ahead. 6:00 AM – Morning Departure – Set out early from camp to catch the sunrise and the first waves of the day. We’ll head to the best surf spots, either by land or sea, depending on the conditions. 7:00 AM – First Surf Session – Hit the water for an exhilarating morning surf session at one of the region’s top breaks. Enjoy the pristine conditions as the sun rises over the coastline. 12:00 PM – Midday Break – Pause for a well-deserved break with a light lunch or snack on the beach. Relax, recharge, and take in the beautiful scenery. 1:00 PM – Afternoon Surf Session – Return to the water for another round of surfing. Whether you’re hitting a famous spot or exploring a hidden gem, the afternoon waves are sure to impress. 5:00 PM – Return to Camp – Head back to camp after a full day of surfing, reflecting on the day’s highlights as you relax and unwind. 8:00 PM – Dinner – Enjoy a delicious dinner featuring local flavors, sharing stories and laughter with fellow surfers as you prepare for another epic day on the waves.   

What type of equipment should I bring?
– The waves usually range between 2 and 8 feet on average, so depending on your level we always recommend bringing 3 types of boards, which can be a shortboard, a hybrid and a larger one for the best conditions and when the wave grows above of its size. Also consider additional straps, wax and fins. * Solarez is always very helpful in case of a small repair.

What kind of clothes should I wear?
– Summer here is very sunny so we recommend shorts, shirts, rashguards, a beach towel, sandals, sunglasses, a cap or hat, the best waterproof sunscreen you can get, and maybe a couple of casual clothes.

Other exciting activities like fishing, horseback riding, or even spearfishing. You can also visit a local community to gain insight into the unique way of life in this beautiful part of the world.

Seasonal conditions

Best Time for a Surf Trip: April to October is prime surf season in Oaxaca, Mexico, with powerful southern hemisphere swells and manageable winds. Expect some of the best waves in the world with long, hollow rides at spots like Barra de la Cruz, Punta Conejo, and La Ventosa.
Offshore Winds & Swells: Swells come from the S-SW, and the winds during the surf season (April-October) are generally offshore, making the waves clean and powerful.
Rainy Season: From June to November, Oaxaca experiences occasional rain, but these short downpours often lead to glassy surf conditions, perfect for a peaceful surf experience away from the crowds.

Swell Size: Ranges from 3ft in the low season to 7-8ft during peak summer months.
Winds: Strong NE-E trade winds from November to March; offshore winds during the surf season (April to October).

During your surf trip, take the time to explore and learn about the Chontal culture through their art, cuisine, and music. The Chontal influence can also be found in the region’s food, which is a beautiful mix of local and ancient flavors.

Ways to get to the camp

You can arrive at Bahías de Huatulco International Airport (HUX) by direct flights from Mexico City, Monterrey, and Tijuana, as well as some seasonal flights from the U.S. and Canada. If you're traveling internationally, you can connect through Mexico City (MEX), which offers frequent daily flights to HUX. The airport is just 20 minutes from Huatulco's beaches, and you can easily reach your destination by taxi, private shuttle, or rental car. (Ask for the Airport transfer to the surf camp*)  

What companies offer flights to Huatulco?
– Huatulco has an international airport however most flights stop in Mexico City If you travel from the United States you can fly directly from Tijuana to Huatulco and save time on the scales. The main companies that fly to this destination are:

Important details

How much money do I need to bring?
– If you hire a complete trip with us you will not incur many additional expenses however we recommend trying to have at least 80 dls for additional costs for each day of stay this is only in case you find something on the way that you need or what would you like to buy. Remember that some communities require a donation for the use of roads and accesses which you must cover at the moment so that they give you the corresponding receipt, tips and some additional food are not included and there may be some additional fees.
– The peso is the official currency in Mexico with a ratio of between $15 and $20 pesos for 1 dollar in the area they can accept dollars but it is very likely that they will take them at a lower price, so we recommend you exchange your dollars for pesos at the airport since there are no exchange houses in the area.
