ABOUT THE SURF CAMP

We are located next to beautiful at, which is the main kite surfing spot in Kalpitiya. The sand bar, main launch spot, is just one minute's boat ride across the lagoon from our place.  The surrounding area is very peaceful with coconut plantations, salt pans and sleepy villages. Wild donkeys roam the dirt roads. Our sunsets are out of this world. The nights are peaceful and quiet.

Sun Wind Beach is one of the very few local family run establishments in Kalpitiya. All staff are members of the extended family which means that income generated goes directly back into the local community.
Sun Wind Beach Kitesurfing Resort and Kiteschool was conceived by Susantha Fernando, Kalpitiya's first local kitesurfer.

Susantha is a highly skilled boatsman with an unparalleled knowledge of the Kalpitiya peninsula. He hails from a local fishing family who have lived in Kalpitiya for generations.

Susantha's life changed forever in 2007 when he witnessed kite surfing for the very first time. During this period, Sri Lankan's civil war was at its peak,  and Kalpitiya was still an intensively rural backwater with very few visitors. With no formal training and only enthusiasm to spur him on, Susantha learnt kite surfing all on his own accord after he was gifted his first kite by foreign thrill seekers. Following this he taught  his brother and cousins how to kite and they now form a well known local kitesurfing team who execute awesome crazy tricks!

Sun Wind Beach Kalpitiya was established in 2015 and is the only kite resort and kite school in Kalpitiya that is wholly owned and operated by local kite surfers. All staff are members of the extended family, meaning income generated goes directly into the local community. It is true community based tourism. Susantha is now happily married with a young son to whom he cannot wait to pass on his kite surfing talents!

ACCOMMODATION AND CATERING

Our property has a natural rustic aesthetic. All structures have been made out of locally sourced materials and are of traditional design. We have a mix of cabanas and backpacker huts set in a tranquil tropical garden. The property has been designed and constructed by members of our family, including our grandmother who wove the coconut thatching for the roofs and fencing!
Guests have access to board games including carrom, and a range of reading material.

We have an elevated chillout where you can relax amongst the coconut trees with glimpses of the lagoon.
We have a small boat that is permanently docked by the banks of Kalpitiya Lagoon where you can have a drink and enjoy the stunning sunsets.
You can also chill out at our beach huts on the sand bar and Vella Island.

Free breakfast, wi fi, daily boat ride to kite surfing spot (sand bar), rescue boat service and exclusive use of beach huts on sand bar and Vella Island.

We have an on site resteraunt offering a range of home made mouthwatering Sri Lankan style seafood and vegetable curries,  snacks and fresh juices.

Vella Island Overnight Kiting Tour
80 Euros per person (maximum 5 people per boat)
Tour inclusions are the same as full day tour PLUS dinner, breakfast and overnight (tent) accomodation on Vella Island.

Half Day Kiting Tour
20 Euros per person  (maximum 5 people per boat)
Includes:  Visit to Dream Island, refreshments and snacks

Dolphin Watching  - Nov to Apr*
20 Euros per person (max 6 per boat)

Mannar Island (Price on Application)
Includes: Return transport (car or jeep), accomodation for 3 nights, daily breakfast, 2 days kiting at Adams Bridge, stop offs at a variety of site seeing spots including Wilpattu National Park jungle road, historic English and Portugese sites, old boab trees etc.

We offer a range of other tours including snorkelling, island hopping, Wilpattu National Park, Anuradapura Ancient City at extremely reasonable prices.  

We can also organise tailor made tours to other parts of the island to suit your interests.

Ways to get to the camp

We are located about 3km from Kalpitiya town which is accessible by tuk tuk or bike. The international airport is about 3.5hrs away by taxi.

9 hours including all equipment - 300 Euros per person
9 hours including all equipment for 2 people - 190 Euros per person.
Per hourly lessons - 40 Euros per person or 20 Euros if student provides own equipment.
3 hour refresher- 110 Euros per person
