LOCATION AND SURF CONDITIONS

---

Surf’s up Weligama surf school is located directly at the beach of Weligama Bay. It’s a beach break surf spot, so a perfect place to learn how to surf and ride your first waves. Also intermediate and advanced surfers will catch some good waves in Weligama Bay – the waves varies from small to big.
As soon as you feel comfortable with this surf spot we will bring you to other nearby famous spots to offer you some variety and keep the challenge up. If you want to go shopping or do other things in Weligama you can reach the center within 10 minutes walking.
As well our Guesthouse is only 10 minutes walking distance from our surf school and 100 meters from the beach.

CAMP CHARACTER

In our camp everyone is welcome. We are flexible, spontaneous individuals – if you come to combine your surf camp with partying we will show you nice places and drink a bottle Arrack with you.
If you are tired you can spend the evening in the Guesthouse watching a movie or just relax on our swing in the garden. Singles, couples, groups, families, pets – you are all welcome! Our package is provided for up to 25 surfers – whereby one teacher instructs maximum three students.

Already 4 years ago we opened our surf school 'Surf's Up' at Weligama Beach.

We started small; at the beginning we had not more than 3 boards - but those boards we were renting out and at the same time we started to give our first surf lessons. To be honest... even though we had many years of experience in surfing our know-how about giving lessons was not very advanced. But with time the number of boards increased more and more and we figured out how to instruct and support our students in a way, so skills unfold and waves can be caught quick independently. We worked hard and today we are happy and proud for what we have achieved.

"When I was 10 years old I tried the first time to ride a wave at Weligama Beach. With 17 years a good friend changed my life by giving me his old surfboard - it was the first board I owned and I learned how to surf with.

With my own Surfing School 'Surf's Up' I have fulfilled my dream and turned my passion into my occupation. It makes me happy to see smiling and happy faces from my students after riding their very first waves."

The team consists of three brothers, a cousin and two good friends – all good surfers and experienced surfing instructors.

ACCOMMODATION TYPES

Surf’s up Weligama Guesthouse is a little hotel and provides 3 comfortable and quiet double rooms fully equipped with own bathroom (hot and cold water), A/C and fan, mosquito net, Free Wifi. Furthermore we offer bed sheets, towels and other hygienic products.

You can either hangout on the cozy balcony, relaxe in the TV lounge on the ground floor, chill outside at our terrace or at our swing in our little garden. Let your feelings decide.

A small extra of our hotel is the little kitchen - feel free to use it for preparing some tea or other small dishes and use the fridge for cooling your water and keeping your fruits fresh.

The hotel is located about 2 km from Weligama town and only 100m from the beach. Take a walk on the beach, feel the sand and waves between your toes and within 10 minutes you are at our surf school. There you can get some action or just chill out on the sunbeds watching the waves and the surfers while getting kissed by the sun.

In our surf camp we provide 7 healthy and delicious breakfast and 5 fantastic homemade dinner (from western to local food). For you breakfast you can chose between:

- "The Classic": Bread, Egg, Jam, Butter, Fruits, Vegetables, Tea/Coffee
- "The Local": Hoppers, Coconut Roti, Honey Pancake, Fruits, Tea/Coffee
- "The Healthy": Oatmeal, Curd, Honey, Fruits, Tea/Coffee

For lunch you can grab some small snacks from the town or from the little roti shop on the other side of the road of our surf school. It’s yummy and cheap.

If you are vegetarian/vegan or allergically to any kind of food, please inform us in advance.

SURF COURSE DETAILS

Our surf package includes 5 days 1,5 h morning surfing and 5 days 1,5 hours evening surfing. In between you can use all our boards free of charge or just hang out on our sunbeds. 1 day is off and we will arrange a day trip/half day trip for you (tea plantation cinnamon island turtle farm herbal garden snake farm river-safari Galle whale watching (extra fee 3.000 rs)) – you decide! Another day you have half day off – at this time you can enjoy a massage or join a yoga lesson!

A common day looks like: surf lesson 7 am – 8.30 am; breakfast at 9 am; break; surf lesson 4.30 pm – 6pm; dinner 7 pm.

SURF MATERIALS

We provide boards every size – from softboard size 8’4 to short boards of size 5’10.

The only thing you have to bring to your surf lessons are swimming cloths and maybe a shirt. For women we can suggest a short or leggings – the softtop can be sometimes a bit painful for the soft skin of women.

SURF CONDITIONS

---

Breaks directly at the main spot and at nearby spots
Our surf school is located directly at the beach of Weligama Bay. This spot is a beach break surf spot and so it’s perfect for riding your first waves. The waves varies from small to big – we will prepare you for every size of wave. If you feel comfortable on your board and ready to go to another surf spot we will teach you how to feel safe surfing on a reef break. For the advanced surfers who are looking for some experience we have some really good spots where you can improve your skills.

Seasonal conditions
High season in Weligama is from November until February. At this time the temperature is always around 32 degrees and it’s almost never rainy. The water temperature is almoste the same degrees – it’s perfect – you can stay in the water for hours and you will not freeze. During the day it’s most of the time a bit windy, that’s why the waves gets a bit choppy. But in the evening the conditions for surfing are perfect again.

Crowd factor and local people
Weligama Beach is a perfect place for beginners, that’s why in peak season (15th December until 15th January) it can be crowded. Nevertheless we take care of you and give you advice how to catch the right waves without dropping someone or getting dropped. In general the vibe in the water is good and advanced surfers give chance for beginners as well.

SURROUNDINGS / REGION

---

Characterization of surroundings/region
Everything you need you will be able to find in Weligama – walking distance from our surf school. If you need any “special” things you can make a trip to Mirissa or Matara (15-30 minutes by tuktuk). The whole south of Sri Lanka is a beautiful landscape full of endless beaches for surfing or sunbathing.

In general Sri Lankan people are very friendly and helpful. If they see “lost” tourists they try to help them by showing the right way – Locals are very happy if they can talk a little bit English and so they try to improve their skills. The locals at the beach are used to tourists, but as soon as you go a bit more inside the country they don’t see people from other countries very often – that’s what tourist should respect and wear appropriate clothes. Just a little advice: don’t go in swimming clothes in the town – people will look at you!

The currency is Sri Lankan rupees and 100 rupees are 0,65 USD. Living costs can be very cheap (250 rs-eat in local restaurants) or a bit more expensive (2000 rs eat in resorts).

Activities and facilities
If you are tired of surfing and you need a day off you can explore the south coast. Talk with us and we can arrange activities for you. Some things you can do are for example: Cinnamon Island, Turtle Farm, herbal garden, snake farm, river-sunset-safari, tea factory, Galle, whale watching. One activity is included in our package price.

The south of Sri Lanka is full of amazing beaches – just get on the bus or rent a scooter and explore other destinations than Weligama.

JOURNEY

---

Ways to get to the camp
First of all you have to get from the airport to Colombo. It’s really easy – chose a local bus or the highway bus starting from the airport (There are busses! Don’t listen to the people outside the airport). Once you are in Colombo you can take the train to Weligama or you take another bus to Galle or to Matara. Bus and train are about 2,5 hours. From there you can either call us and we pick you up by tuktuk or you take another local bus to Weligama bus station.

If you want to go by taxi we can help you arrange a pick up transfer – it’s about 10.000 rs.

Important details
For Sri Lanka you will need a Visa. It’s pretty easy – just apply online for the ETA. It’s valid for 30 days. If you want to stay longer you can either extend the Visa in Colombo or we can also help you with this.

This package includes:
Monkey View

Enjoy the nature, enjoy the silence and your own little apartment. Monkey view is a new place close to the river in Weligama. It provides one big sleeping room with fan, a bathroom, a small extra room (possible to provide a single bed), free WIFI a terrace and a little garden. It’s a quiet place, good to relax your mind and soul and take a rest from surfing and traveling. You can enjoy your privacy there and no one will disturb you. Once you are there you have the feeling you don’t want leave anymore.

There is just a little road going to Monkey view and looking around you are surrounded by palm trees, banana trees and a lot of nature. Even though the main road is just 100m from the apartment – there you can catch the tuktuk or the bus to go to Weligama or to the surf point.

It’s a perfect place for friends or a family – up to 4 people can stay in monkey view.
