 Peniche is the best location for surfing in Portugal and one of the best locations in Europe, the waves are constant and its countless beaches are versatile, perfectly suited to surfers of every level of ability.

The Special Surf 78  school is located inside the Hotel Star inn Peniche in front and only a few meters away from the main beach of Peniche-Baleal area, perfect for learning and developing the surfing technique. Our exact location is Cova de Alfarroba beach in the middle of Peniche-Baleal bay. The facilities at SPECIAL SURF 78, just a few metres from the beach, offers changing rooms, showers, and lockers, so your surf experience is as accessible and comfortable as possible.   Along this stretch of beach, there are small waves that are perfect for beginners, alongside bigger stronger waves suited to more experienced surfers. That means we can select the best location for our students' different levels of ability, hugely improving the quality of our surfing lessons. That's why we affectionately call this beach “the bay of dreams”.   The beach is sandy, flat, and very long, and there are no rocks, reducing the risk of accidents

We are a surf school for all and we try to be the most inclusive possible, so consider us suitable for family atmosphere, relax or party environment, all ages, (suggested age to start surfing 5/6 years), any physical or mental condition. Main language is Portuguese, Spanish, English, French. Dogs Permitted.

Brothers Nuno and Edgar, born in the fishing town of Peniche and surfers from a very early age, opened Special Surf 78 in 2011.

They returned to Peniche after pursuing academic training in Sports and Physical Education in Leiria, committed to laying down roots in their birth town, and opened an innovative surf school, Special Surf 78, an inclusive school for everyone with professional instructors who can cater for a wide variety of needs and any learner.

Nuno and Edgar specialized in Special Education with the specific aim of being more inclusive. This allows them to welcome people with all sorts of special needs at their surf school. They are committed to their activity and to using didactic and educational knowledge while teaching surf, along with values of companionship, solidarity, and sustainability, so Special Surf 78 remains a landmark school in Peniche.

What expect from the teachers/instructors?
- Experienced instructors accredited by the Portuguese Surfing Federation (FPS), instructors hold degrees in physical education and sport, engaging real local surfers who grew up surfing in Peniche, highly experienced instructors and surfers, instructors with master degrees in special education in the field of Surf, and a lot of motivation and commitment to passing on our passion for surfing. We will be your best friends around Peniche :)
  

Special Surf 78 has surf lessons every day in the morning and in the afternoon; you can start your lessons any day of the week. To meet us, go to the hotel  reception, where we have our Special surf 78 help desk. Someone will always be there to welcome our clients/customers, and help to do the surf plan together.

Once you are ready, we just need to cross the road to be in the best beach to learn and improve your surf..

SURF MATERIALS

All the equipment in included in the price of the lessons, but you also can rent before or after the lesson, or bettween the days of lessons. Special Surf 78 have all sorts of surf boards, soft, epoxy, fiberglass in all kinds of shapes and sizes for beginners, intermediate, advanced and performance level. About the wetsuits, they are made in a local company, high quality and all sizes and different thickness´s. We also have paddle boards or Body boards and flips for rental or beginner lesson.

Ina case you have lessons or you rent equipment with us, you can use the changing room, bathrooms, lockers and showers with warm shower.

Breaks directly at the main spot and at nearby spots

Cova de Alfarroba beach in the middle of Peniche-Baleal bay, along this stretch of beach, there are small waves that are perfect for beginners, alongside bigger stronger waves suited to more experienced surfers. The beach is sandy, flat, and very long, and there are no rocks, reducing the risk of accidents. You have a lot of different beaches to explore very close of each others. Only 15 minutes walking from the middle of the bay, in the other side of the city, you have Supertubos beach, very well know beach that every year is chose by world surf league to do an official event of the CT competition with the best surfers, men and women, in the world.

Seasonal conditions

Peniche has sunny days and good water temperature from April to November, but the months with more consistency are June,July, August and September.

Crowd factor and local people

It´s a place like everywhere. Respect to be respected. With teacher you don´t need to concern, but by your own it´s important to respect surf etiquette. Other beaches are crowded, but the one we operate is naturally only crowded between 15 July and 15 August, Local Fests times.
Local people are friendly and passionate, with strong fishing culture, but also with the well come culture since is a city that also depends of tourism since long time ago.

Ways to get to the camp

By Car

1. Lisbon Airport

2. Take the E1 from Av. de Berlim

3. Take the A8 for the IP6 at Óbidos. Take exit 14 on the A8

4. Continue on the IP6. Head towards Travessa do Salva Vidas in Peniche

Bus route

- You can get to Peniche in 1h30 from Lisbon with two different coach companies. One leaves from Campo Grande Terminal (Campo Grande metro station), the other leaves from Sete Rios (Jardim Zoológico metro station). Both terminals are just 10 minutes away by taxi, but you can also take the metro. A small bus connects the Airport and Sete Rios station every 40 minutes (approximately). Once you arrive at Peniche bus station, you can take a 5-minute drive or taxi ride do Special Surf 78 surf school at Star Inn Peniche.
