Porto region

Porto is one of the oldest cities in Portugal and also a popular tourist destination. The city itself has a lot to offer and promises unique holidays. But the surrounding towns are also worth a visit and exude their own charm. From small fishing villages to small towns, there is plenty to visit around Porto. There are also hidden and popular surfing spots to be found here. Porto and its surroundings offer a lot to consider for a surfing holiday in this region.

Matosinhos

Matosinhos has one of the most popular surf beaches in northern Portugal, making it a popular destination and location for many surf camps and surf schools. The wide sandy beach with short but strong beach breaks offers ideal conditions for beginners and experienced surfers. The surf camps in Matosinhos are aware of this and offer courses for every level. Most surfing is done in small groups; thus, the instructors can adjust individually to the respective level and guarantee that even beginners will be able to surf their first waves after their stay. During the high season, the beach areas of Matosinhos are supervised and allow children and families to enjoy their stay in safety. The surf camps are also geared towards families and offer rooms for the whole family. As Matosinhos is very popular and there are many surf schools here, the line-up can get crowded. However, within a few minutes' walk you can bypass the crowds and find a suitable surf spot. As the main spot is surrounded by walls, there are good conditions with constant waves almost all year round.

Matosinhos is the most important fishing port in Portugal today and therefore has many traditional restaurants. The houses and architecture of the town also clearly reflect Portuguese culture and history. Further south, at the end of the promenade, is the famous Castelo do Queijo, a 15th century fortress that was originally built to protect the town from attack. There are also many restaurants and bars close to the coast, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day in the waves of this city.

Porto

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and attracts many visitors with its charm. Often described as the capital of northern Portugal, Porto offers a lot of history and culture to discover. But not only the liveliness and many facilities of the city make it a popular destination, also the good surfing conditions directly at the city beach attract many travellers. Many surf camps have set up in Porto and offer unique stays here for everyone. The surf camps in Porto choose the perfect beach with ideal conditions based on personal surfing level and daily conditions. Beginners can make the most of the city beach, combining the city and surfing. Experienced surfers are usually taken to the surrounding beaches in Matosinhos or Espinho to enjoy the stronger waves. After a long day in the waves, Porto offers many leisure activities.

Porto is one of the oldest cities in the country. So there is plenty to explore for culture and history enthusiasts. Porto's image is very much shaped by the Douro River and thus offers first-class nature in front of the city's World Heritage Site. Also a big part of Porto's culture is the popular port wine. Numerous port wine cellars can be found in the city where you can try the popular wine. Of course, there are numerous restaurants and bars in Porto, both traditional and international, which have a varied offer and bring a perfect end to the day.

Miramar

A little further south of Porto and the Duoro you will find Miramar. This is the home of the Peste Surfcamp. The Peste Surfcamp is one of the oldest surf camps in the country and offers a familiar and at the same time open and relaxed atmosphere. The hostel was originally an old family house. Parties are held here every week and guests enjoy the evening together. The water quality in Miramar is generally better than in Porto and surfing is great here, too. However, you should pay attention to the bottom, especially at low tide, as there are a few rocks on the bottom that can cause injuries. Depending on the day's conditions, you can either use the beach in town or take your surf lessons at one of the many surf spots in the area.

Miramar is not a typical tourist destination. For this reason, it is perfect for anyone who wants to get to know the country and its people personally. During the summer months, many Portuguese from the surrounding towns spend their days on Miramar's beach. There are also a number of restaurants and bars near the beach, which are the perfect place to spend the evening.

Gaia

On the other side of the river Duoro, opposite Porto, is Vila Nova de Gaia (or simply "Gaia" to the locals). In 1999, the Surfing Porto surf camp opened its doors here and has been enchanting its guests with a unique surfing stay not far from the cultural metropolis ever since. Here you will find the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. The Atlantic Ocean is only 500 metres away and offers numerous sandy beaches to relax on. Surfing is generally done in the surroundings of Porto, depending on individual surfing level and daily conditions.

Gaia is best known as the place of origin of Port wine. At that time, the famous wine was brought to Gaia on ships to be stored in one of the many wine cellars along the port. Nowadays, the ships have been replaced by road transport; however, the storage in the port cellars has remained the same. Over 60 wine cellars can be found in Gaia, welcoming visitors and spreading the tradition. Another attraction of the town is the new Teleferico de Gaia, a cable car that leads to the Jardin do Morro and offers excellent views.

Espinho

Espinho is located 20 kilometres south of Porto. Here Watermark Surf House welcomes everyone who wants to spend their holiday in this beautiful place; big or small, single travellers, families or groups, everyone is welcome to be part of the family. The Surf House is located only 30 metres from the beach and surf spot Baia. Most of the surf lessons take place at this spot, but if there are no suitable waves here, the experienced surf instructors will find the right alternative spots and take you there. Another popular surf spot in the village is Cagalhotos; the surf conditions here are relatively similar, but often a little easier than in Baia.

Originally a fishing village, Espinho became a popular seaside resort during the 19th century as the sea was considered to have healing properties. Nowadays, Espinho is still a popular destination and offers, among other things, a number of accommodations, a casino, the oldest golf course on the Iberian Peninsula and numerous surf spots along the long sandy beach.

Esmoriz & Maceda

Further south, the surf camps in Esmoriz offer relaxation and tranquillity. The surf camps here are generally a little smaller and therefore have a friendly and familiar atmosphere. It's easy to make new friends during your stay or arrive in a group and enjoy your stay with friends and family. Although Esmoriz has its own surf section called Barrinha, the surf camps often use the surf spots in the nearby area. Depending on the surf level and daily conditions, the cars are loaded early and the journey to the best surf spot is started. The beach of Esmoriz has some guarded beach sections and is therefore also perfect for swimming.

Esmoriz was a traditional fishing village, which can still be seen today. The traditional fishermen's houses have been converted into holiday homes, but the flair is still recognisable. In the northern section of the beach and promenade, traditional fishing is still in use.

Further south, right on the edge of the Maceda Nature Park, is the Porto Surf Camp. Here you can relax and live out the real surfing lifestyle. With 8km of beach, right between popular surf spots on the coast, there is the perfect wave for everyone. If you don't want to surf, you can easily switch to stand up paddling or kayaking to spend your time on the water.

Furadouro

Furadouro is home to Golden Waves Surf Lodge and Marias Hostel & Surf. Both surf camps have a relaxed atmosphere and make use of the empty beaches and surf spots for their lessons. Due to the location, the surrounding surf spots can also be easily reached. Lessons are based on surf level and surf conditions, so you may often find yourself starting the day in the van to get to the perfect spot. Although there are a few surf schools here, the surf spots and line-ups are mostly empty, so you can completely enjoy the waves.

Furadouro has been spared from big tourism so far. Only in the summer months, when the locals discover the place for themselves, it can get crowded. Many restaurants and bars still cook traditional dishes here. The surrounding nature is also worth a visit; dense pine forest, dunes and fine sandy beach characterise the surrounding nature. Several cycling and hiking trails connect the villages and are popular leisure destinations.

Murtosa

South of Ovar, situated on the Aveiro Lagoon, is the Nortada Aventura. The surf camp is suitable for those who are not looking for the typical surfing holiday. Surfing here is not in the Atlantic Ocean, but in the lagoon. Accordingly, one does not ride waves here, but switches to kite or windsurfing. The nature reserve has more than 40km of waterways and a permanent water temperature of 22°C - 25°C. So activities like stand up paddling and kayaking are also possible activities here. The accommodation has room for 4-5 people and is therefore ideal for a family holiday or holiday with friends. Surrounded by the beautiful nature of the nature reserve and just a few metres from the water, it is the perfect place for nature enthusiasts and water sports lovers.

Centro

The Centro region is located in the golden centre of the country, surrounded by the green north and Lisbon and Alentejo in the south. The region stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Spanish border and thus has a variety of landscapes. In addition, there are historic cities, pure nature and true surfer's paradises. The largest city in the region is the student city of Coimbra. It is home to one of the oldest universities in the country. But also small fishing villages with beautiful nature like Aveiro, the Venice of Portugal, can be found here. Other popular places in the region are Figueira da Foz, or the surfing resorts of Peniche, Lourinha and Nazaré; here you will find great waves and even numerous national and international competitions that take place here.

Praia da Vagueira

Located in the Aveiro area, very close to the Venice of Portugal, you will find the Slide Surf Camp and the Secret Surf Camp. Both surf camps are located in the small coastal town of Praia da Vagueira. Spared from mass tourism, you can still find quiet places and empty lineups here. The local surf camps also exude this tranquillity. The Slide Surfcamp is open to all guests, young and old. The focus here is on surfing and together with you, the surf lessons enable you to improve your level and find the fun in surfing. Even though there is no night rest here, the surf camp is not a party house but rather cultivates a family and relaxed atmosphere. Also close to the beach and suitable for a number of people is the Secret Surf Camp. This is particularly suitable for couples, groups and backpackers and therefore also exudes a relaxed holiday atmosphere. Both surf camps have surf courses for every level; surfing is mainly done on the beach of Vagueira. However, surrounding beaches such as Figueira da Foz or even Peniche can also be easily reached from the surf camps and are often only a few minutes' drive away. If you don't want to surf in a group lesson, you can also have private lessons and improve your skills individually.

Praia da Vagueira is a small fishing village in the Centro region. With white beaches and long dunes, it is a place to relax. Traditional fishing is still very popular here. Especially Xavenga fishing, an old traditional way of fishing, is still used here and is definitely something unique to watch. Here, two fishing boats go out into the sea parallel to each other and stretch the net between their boats to catch the fish. Numerous traditional restaurants can be found along the promenade, offering first-class culinary experiences.

Figueira da Foz

In a place called Maiorca, which belongs to the district of Figueira da Foz, is the Portugal On Water Surf Lodge. Here you will find an old farmhouse with modern hotel flair. Each of the guests becomes part of the family here and can spend their surfing stay with the other guests. Surfing is mainly done at Cabedelo Beach, a surf spot that has the right waves for every level. For this reason, the surf courses are also divided into the corresponding levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). Generally, the surf camps in Peniche have a family atmosphere and maintain this during the stay, as they want to make sure that every guest feels comfortable. Parede & Carcavelos

Both the Carcavelos Surf Hostel in Carcavelos and the Salty Soul Surfcamp in Parede have made Carcavelos beach their home beach and use it to give surf lessons for all levels. Nevertheless, Carcavelos beach is very popular with locals and tourists alike, as it not only offers ideal conditions for beginners but also for experienced surfers. So it can get particularly crowded at weekends. However, based on the daytime conditions, there are numerous alternative spots in the vicinity that are perfect for certain levels. The section in Parede is also a good surf spot, especially in the winter months when the waves are more consistent. However, initial surfing experience should be maintained, as the bottom is characterised by some rocks and stones and can therefore lead to injuries for beginners. Both surf camps also offer numerous other activities to make your holiday as varied as possible. Popular activities include yoga sessions and massages for full relaxation during your stay. But more adventurous activities can also be found here. Whether it's other water sports like SUP or kayaking, or excursions into the surrounding nature, there's plenty to explore here.

Parede is a small coastal town on the Atlantic coast. Many restaurants and their terraces here not only offer traditional cuisine and wonderful fish, but also offer beautiful views of the beaches right on the waterfront. In addition, the beach of Parede is also considered a healing place, as the mixture of sunlight and iodine found here helps to alleviate bone diseases. Thus, it also attracts many people every year. Nevertheless, bathing is more difficult in this section because of the rocks.

Carcavelos beach is probably the most popular destination in the village. The town itself only has a few hotel complexes and restaurants to offer for tourists, but the beach attracts all the visitors. The beach is one of the best beaches in the Lisbon region and, at 1.5 km, it is also the longest beach in the region. With golden, soft sand and perfect surfing conditions, clean water, and guarded beach sections, this beach attracts a large number of visitors every year. Whether families, locals or teenagers, there is something for everyone here. Families with children can swim without much worry in the supervised beach sections and don't have to worry about accidents due to small currents and few waves. Young people are also attracted to this beach because there is always something to do here; whether it's volleyball, beach football or other leisure activities, this beach is always active. Surfers get their money's worth in the waves. They are not too high and strong, making them perfect for beginners and advanced surfers.

Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica comprises the 26km stretch of coastline on the west coast of Portugal. The coastline was named after the largest town of the same name. The coastline is exposed to the Atlantic Ocean and therefore has numerous waves that are suitable for all levels, depending on the surf spot. Along the long stretch of coastline there is beautiful nature and many surf camps have settled here.

Many surf camps in the region are located in Costa da Caparica. As this is the largest town, there is a lot to do here, but at the same time the town is also very close to Lisbon and therefore offers a good starting point for day trips. There are the right waves for every level to be encouraged and to improve their own techniques. In addition, the lineups are usually empty, as there are enough waves for everyone, making it easy to get lost. Whether it's a party atmosphere, relaxation or even a camp just for women, everything can be found here. Far from the daily surf lessons on the beach of the Costa da Caparica, many surf camps also offer yoga lessons for relaxation or bike rental, horse riding lessons and other activities for more adrenaline. Further south along the Costa da Caparica you will also find numerous surf camps, such as in Fonte da Telha or Praia da Castelo. These surf camps have chosen somewhat quieter locations as their starting point and offer their lessons on the beaches directly in front of the surf camps.

After long days in the waves, the surf camps generally offer a variety of excursions; whether bike tours, hikes or visits to the national park, there is plenty to see here and you won't find boredom here. If you just want to relax, most surf camps have a pool or relaxation area where you can completely switch off and leave everyday life behind.

Madeira

Madeira is one of Portugal's islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to its location, it enjoys a spring-like climate all year round. For this reason, the island is often called the "Island of Eternal Spring". Although the island has a wonderful climate and shines in green colours due to the humidity, the island is not a typical beach holiday destination. Madeira has only self-made beaches, which are protected from the influence of the ocean by walls. Nevertheless, the island has a lot to offer. Apart from the unique nature, Madeira also has an excellent culture and friendly and open inhabitants. Madeira has wonderful surfing conditions, as the waves can arrive unstopped from the Atlantic. However, it is important to note that the ground is rocky and injuries can occur. Beginners should therefore not jump into the waves alone.

Porto da Cruz

Both the Hotel Vila Bela Surfcamp and the Madeira Surfcamp and Madeira New Wave are located in Porto da Cruz, a town in the north of Madeira. The surf lessons of the camps take place on the beaches of the town. Praia da Alagoa and Praia da Maiata are not only surfable by experienced surfers, but are also the only beachbreaks with surfable waves. The beach, consisting of volcanic sand, has perfect conditions for beginners and can minimise injuries due to the sandy bottom. The surrounding area of the surf camps is also stunning and should definitely be explored during your stay.

Porto da Cruz is a small town on the north coast of Madeira. It is named after the cross that was erected to show explorers the way. Accordingly, the name means something like Port of the Cross. Whether hiking, jeep safaris or coasteering, there are several activities to discover here. Not only can you surpass yourself in surfing, but you can also challenge your strength and free your senses with the activities in Porto da Cruz.

Azores

The Azores are also one of Portugal's Atlantic islands. Formed by huge underwater volcanoes, they are a true paradise for every nature lover and adventure seeker. Crater lakes, waterfalls, and magnificent flora and fauna can be discovered here and offer wonderful excursion destinations during your stay. In recent years, air travel to the islands has been fundamentally improved, yet they have been spared mass tourism and thus have untouched nature and culture as well as traditional customs to show. The unique nature that is found here is also highly sought after by the inhabitants, so only 5% of the islands are populated and the rest is taken up by nature. Due to the excellent climate and thus warm water, the islands are also popular with water sports enthusiasts. Especially the largest islands São Miguel and Santa Maria have reliable surf spots and are therefore popular with surfers.

Ribeira Grande

On the island of São Miguel you will find the Azores Surf Co surf camp. It is located in a place called Ribeira Grande and has several surf spots right at its foot. Whether beachbreaks with ideal conditions for beginners or popular point and reef breaks for advanced surfers, everyone will find the perfect wave for them. The waves are constant all year round with water temperatures ranging from 16°C - 22°C. The reef breaks in the surrounding region are particularly popular and definitely worth a trip. They are a bit away from the main beaches and offer unique views and wonderful nature that surrounds you. Ribeira Grande is the main surf spot on the island. Especially the surf spot Monte Verde, located directly there, offers unique surfing conditions. On good days, the local surfers also come here. Nevertheless, there is enough space for everyone here and everyone can prove and improve their skills in the waves.
